I don't think the house was hit. The swimming pool seems to be the main casualty. Maybe go down there tomorrow if the roads open up, but most roads should be shut down a day. Power may be off a while, but I hope not. Kristi still has text so you can text her...

Oldog - the Jeep is tucked away in the area by the utility room. Seems as though the last tree that fell also managed to take a hunk out of our driveway! Guess its time to call the insurance company now.

Very glad that we have a generator since the grill was not an option for dinner tonight. I managed to cook rice and chops in an electric skillet.

Thanks to everyone for checking on us! Hopefully tomorrow we can start with clean-up.

Clean-up underway now. 1313 still without power, but doing ok. Webe has 2 trees on his house. Thankfully they are cedar trees and not the tall NC pines! He and family are safe and staying with in-laws. Webe said he saw 2 miles of downed powerlines this morning on Hwy 70. I'm sure this means we'll be without power for a few more days.

Posted a few more pics on FB. Charlotte, feel free to re-post here if you'd like. Just to give you an idea of the size trees we're dealing with, the one that reached the neighbor's house is 59" around and probably a good 80' tall!

Keep praying for the rest of our coastal Badwebbers that are, or have been, in Irene's path.

Donnie's house and boat are ok out on Hatteras Island. Some minor damage to the boat. They heard the news from neighbors who stayed. Sounds like the eye of Irene passed almost directly over their house. They are relaxing in the VA mountains awaiting news of the return of ferry services.

Brankin is fine but stubborn as a German mule...

German's stubborn? Surely you jest!

I'm at an internet (sweepstakes) cafe/"business center" attempting to prepare for this weeks interviews.

I'm staying with friends in New Bern that have electricity, air conditioning and nice hot showers, but unfortunately NO INTERNET OR CABLE.

Last estimate I got for power being restored in Thursday mid-day. But in the early a.m. Tuesday I am headed for an interview in Asheville (interview on Wednesday).

My property and my neighbors fared well. Just outside of my neighborhood people didn't fare as well - trees knocked down, some on buildings, some on power lines, some property damage, etc.

Pictures will be forthcoming once I get power again.

And my silence begins again,

FWIW...
I finally got power back last night - about 5 & 1/2 days after the power went out.

My neighbors and I are very fortunate considering what damage was found very close to us. The only real damage amongst my neighbors and I was my closest neighbor had some vinyl soffit covering blown off his house. We are also fortunate that - for the most part - we didn't have the flooding other areas further North experienced from Irene. Although it was only a Category 1 hurricane when it hit this area, some of the gusts had to be in the neighborhood of 100 mph. While a Category 1 storm isn't all that strong the thing about Irene was that it lasted for a considerable time. The winds and rain started picking up Friday late afternoon/early evening. I went to bed last Friday night about 1:30 a.m. with the winds and rain getting stronger as my satellite TV was finally out for the count. I woke up about 6:00 a.m. Saturday to complete darkness (power was lost) to the sounds of heavy winds and rain. Hurricane Irene was 'here'. After eating dinner about 5:30 Saturday night (thankfully I had some nice leftover stromboli from Thursday - at room temp it was GREAT, at least better than the sandwich I had for lunch) I decided to take a nap while Irene was still delivering some heavy winds and rain. I woke up about 9:00 p.m. to complete darkness (power still out obviously) and complete silence! So the storm was here - in varying intensities - for about a full day. As the hours passed by, cabin fever was starting to set in. Since I had woke up from my after dinner nap after dark I couldn't go outside and inspect for any damage until the next morning.

Here are the pictures of my inspection from Sunday morning.
From the Northwest edge of the treeline things look pretty good, other than some leaves, twigs and other associated windblown vegetation:

HI 01

Other than one of my 'driveway' markers being a little off vertical:

HI 02

It's kind of hard to see from the first picture, but a mesh covering on the air conditioner in my bedroom had been blown out of position a little:

HI 03

From the Northeast corner of the treeline things look pretty good again:

HI 04

And obviously there had been some foot traffic through after Irene had passed (I could only find one set of tracks):

HI 05

From the Southeast corner of the property both lot 1

HI 06

and lot 2

HI 07

are looking pretty good as well.
Again from the Southwest corner of the property all looks pretty good as well.

Since everything was pretty good with my property it was now time to take a ride 'around the block' to see how the immediate area fared. I didn't have to go very far to find some interesting sights.
Just a few hundred feet down the road:

HI 10

Almost to the 'corner':

HI 11

On the other side of the street closer to the 'corner' - not to worry the tree is on an abandoned house:

HI 12

I first attempted to go to Highway 17 but my efforts were thwarted after a couple of curves by some people working on clearing the road (a little more on this area later):

HI 13

So I turn around to make it a short trip around the block and find this carport blown up against the trees:

HI 14

As an FYI, that German Shepherd is Tank. He left a few footprints in my freshly epoxy coated garage floor just about a year ago.
About a half the way 'around the block' this root system was pulled up:

HI 15

The odd thing was that there didn't appear to be any substantial trees in the root system:

HI 16

About 3/4 of the way 'around the block' this lean-to building on a small hobby farm sustained some damage:

HI 17

Enough pics for this post,

Since I hadn't recalled power outages for significant lengths of time from the previous hurricanes I've experienced, it was time to go exploring out a little further outside of the neighborhood to see if I would find anything interesting.
Here's where the people were clearing the road earlier:

HI 18

It's hard to see in the picture above, but pretty much dead center is a nice sized tree trunk jutting out into the road.
I'd estimate it at about 18-20 inches in diameter:

HI 19

Thankfully there was a one car wide path cleared now so I could get to Highway 17. Traveling North on Highway 17 about 2 miles down the road it was obvious why the power was out.
Power lines down and in Little Swift Creek:

HI 20

Fallen trees intertwined in the power lines:

HI 21

Power lines snapped by the fallen trees:

HI 22

And sheared off insulators:

HI 23

The scene looked pretty similar for a stretch of about 2 miles on Highway 17.

Of course, there are always those you try to take advantage in the times of others misfortune (crappy cell phone pic):

HI 24

It struck me as a little odd, but it seemed like all the auto parts stores in the area had signs up saying they had generators as well.

On Monday I tried to find a way to check my Email I found this right by the library:

HI 25

I flew out Tuesday morning for an interview on Wednesday and just had to take this pic of one of the bike parking areas where I interviewed:

HI 26

Yes, that's an '06 Uly closest to the camera!

So my power finally came on last night and I finally rode again today - the last time was last week Thursday!

Here's to riding MUCH more!
