Illegality prevents me from smoking it. Never have. Won't until it's legal.

Vaporizers are the way to go. No hazardous smoke. And the product lasts longer as you don't destroy it as you do with flame. Hence more THC entering the body so less consumption needed.

Anyway as for pot making you stupid as reported by digital in his beevis and butthead comment. I strongly disagree with that. Yes constant overuse can burn you out but I know quite a few very intelligent people who smoke on a somewhat regular basis and none of them walk around like a bunch of brain dead teenagers.

Fact: Marijuana has not been shown to cause long-term cognitive impairment.

Marijuana produces immediate, temporary changes in thoughts, perceptions, and information processing. The cognitive process most clearly affected by marijuana is short-term memory. In laboratory studies, subjects under the influence of marijuana have no trouble remembering things they learned previously. However, they display diminished capacity to learn and recall new information. This diminishment only lasts for the duration of the intoxication. There is no convincing evidence that heavy long-term marijuana use permanently impairs memory or other cognitive functions.[9]

Fact: There is no compelling evidence that marijuana contributes substantially to traffic accidents and fatalities.

At some doses, marijuana affects perception and psychomotor performance – changes which could impair driving ability. However, in driving studies, marijuana produces little or no car-handling impairment – consistently less than produced by low to moderate doses of alcohol and many legal medications. In contrast to alcohol, which tends to increase risky driving practices, marijuana tends to make subjects more cautious. Surveys of fatally injured drivers show that when THC is detected in the blood, alcohol is almost always detected as well. For some individuals, marijuana may play a role in bad driving. The overall rate of highway accidents appears not to be significantly affected by marijuana's widespread use in society.[10]

Weed why do you need it? cant get your head on straight with out self medicating?
I noticed the studies quoted are fairly old anything newer out there?
Most higher functioning people will not stand for anything that blunts lifes experiences. So why the weed and a nearly religous devotion to it being legal? If your afraid of being controlled why do you let the need to be stupid and have the munchies control you?
The term stoner must have a basis in fact. A common usage is Bob he's ok just a stoner.

Don't we all self medicate in one way or another.

Maybe it's a big piece of cheese cake. Maybe it's a scotch and water. Maybe it's a nice cigar. Maybe it's twisting the wick up above 100mph on a sport bike. Maybe it's jumping out of a perfectly good airplane. Maybe it's that hottie at the bar.

The question is whether the risks of pot are any higher than those of other activities of "self medication".

Wow man,.... again... I didn't say it "makes" you DUMB.

Fact: There is no compelling evidence that marijuana contributes substantially to traffic accidents and fatalities.

Great... so... you believe this to be true? How often to cops give breathalyzers vs THC blood tests? I would agree with this if it was soley about accident fatalities, but I am referring mostly to the non-injury or light injury traffic accidents and/or traffic stops. There simply will be no data for this. (as far as THC) Again,... where are the those who admit to smoking weed from these accidents/injuries?? No-where right?? They are nowhere because they will NEVER EVER admit to it, even when it becomes legal. This is where alcohol has a slight advantage because of the smell.

And why does it have to be compelling evidence? Do you want to wait and see if anyone gets injured first?

Side-note:
We need a new -To Tell the Truth- reality TV game show.. one Stoned, one Drunk and one Straight compete for cash, beer, weed and other prizes (including a get out of jail free card) Other contestants vote for who is who before the competition. A few episodes will consist of genuine Triplet's to compete and for studying the effect differences of the 3 states.

"Stoned, Drunk or Straight" Tuesday's and Thursday nights @ 11:30pm on cable ch 420.

It makes you DUMBER!! (short term)

LOL...

FYI: When you smoke weed, you will allways be either Beavus and Buthead, or Cheech and Chong, or Harold and Kumar, or Jay and Silent Bob, OR..., the king of all stoners: Jeff Spicoli.

No one else really fits. But I guess you could practice your Arnold Schwarzenegger accent if you wanted. (only when your high)

There's no question that pot has an intoxicating effect.

Common sense would tell you that both a drunk person and stoned person would fail compared to a straight person.

That isn't really the question.

The question is whether or not a stoned person is any more impaired than a drunk person, enough so to justify making pot illegal vs. allowing alcohol to remain legal.

I guess some combination of a fairly exciting lifestyle, lack of interest and fear of job loss has denied me . .over all these years the chance to contribute first hand knowledge.

Shame I suppose . . but I'm neither sorry nor do I feel left out.

I do find myself entertained as some of the silly statements above.

I know many folks who do, and did, smoke and as I read the sweeping proclamations . . I have only two initial reactions.

1) You have been sold some really weed.

2) Your friends did a hell of a lot less stupid shit when they were stoned than mine did.

Regardless . . . I always enjoyed the burgers and fries when I rode along with them at 3am.

In addition . . and subject to the obvious caveats (I don't want you flying my plane, driving while my kids are on the street or doing my triple by-pass) I could give a flying rat's ass if they legalize it.

One of the immediate benefits of legalization is that it would make tens of thousands of folks in cheap suits and fake Ray-Bans stop looking like idiots . . as we SPEND like drunken sailors . . "fighting the drug war".

If we fought other wars that way we'd have been overrun by the Latvians.

Well you happy self proclaiming non affected stoners sure make lousy employees. I just hired another one smart enough to pass the piss test who would otherwise make for a pretty good employee. Piss testing is a joke, ya have to talk to them and look into their eyes, spend a little time working with them. If there were non stoners looking for a labor intensive job they are not getting off unemployment to work around here.

This being his first week of work in a while (married with a new child, not a skilled 32 year old)he made two good days, then needed $20 for gas money yesterday to make it to work today(payday). I've been through this shit before so I knew what was coming. He calls me this morning out of gas. Late three and a half hours. First week of work, on payday no less.....stupid, stupid move. I was rooting for him.....damnit!

This man is from a good family, has at least two years of college and has just screwed off thus far in his life. He said the new child has him wanting to learn a skill(tired of running a weed eater and or being a waiter) so I am ok to work with training this one, he is honest and hard working(except for tokin' time) with a good attitude and willingness to learn(except for token time).

His life's priorities line up like this: 1. token time 2. wife and kid 3. finding a way to support #1. so #2 is easier to deal with(I guess that would be a profession or job).

This is the best candidate of eight in the past three weeks. I gave five criteria in my ad for a bodyshop trainee. This is the only guy who read those and qualified. He came in NOT stoned, he does not have "meth mouth" like so many of the others, and he shows some signs of intelligence, sadly, like none of the others did.

I have been through this before in twenty years of being in business. The field of candidates here in East Tennessee are actually worse that what we had in Central Florida twelve years ago.

I tried advertising for skilled help a few weeks ago with two responses, one moving in from another city with a nasty attitude and another who in the first hour of working for me, I caught carrying my tools out to his vehicle for no work related reason, looked like theft to me, had to let him go. This position would pay from $12 to $20 per hour. Where are the skilled experienced folks who want to work? No, a carpentry job skill set does not transfer.

Smok'em if you got'em. Climb in your bubble where everything looks good to you from your point of view.

I am of the I don't care if it gets legalized point of view. If there is a line in the voting booth for limiting it to the sick whom it might help and retired folks who are beyond a productive age or ability and they surrender their drivers licenses.....I will push that button. The rest of us have stuff to do.....what?.....pay attention? Hell, make it legal for everyone on Saturday, but Saturday only. Do the same for alcohol.....Saturday's only. Give the employers of this great Nation Monday through Friday with sober help.

If you put him under guard and watched him 24/7 and fed him only organic food and pure spring water...he would still be an idiot.

Ugly is skin deep....Stupid goes clean to the bone.

I fight the same battles with worthless people. I for the life of me don't know which is worse...a complete moron or some prima donna that thinks his mere presence should earn him the keys to the bank.

Dude has a problem...it goes much deeper than weed. We test people too and in the last 10 years, we have found 3 people worth keeping....the rest were sent down the highway...some hard enough to leave skidmarks...nothing gripes my ass worse than some self important poser that can't find his ass with either hand...

Anybody know any motivated, well qualified HVAC/R people???? I'm hiring.

I think the main reason weed is still illegal is to fill up the jails. They are one of the few American Industries that's booming. It's a great way to suck off the taxpayer teat...we pay some megacorp tens of thousands per inmate per year...you can bet there is $trong Lobbying to keep that Gravy Train rolling.

“According to the US Department of Justice, 30-40 percent of all current prison admissions involve crimes that have no direct or obvious victim other than the perpetrator,” the report shows. “The drug category constitutes the largest offense category, with 31 percent of all prison admissions resulting from such crimes.” }

This man is not stupid, he has a higher IQ than I do, he shows signs of intelligence that I have been able to work with, he is a quick study on the jobs he has done so far. His memory for more than one thing at a time kind of sucks, but the oh so innocent grass has such a pull on him that he cannot get his priorities straight.

For now I am going to work with him. I don't give anyone anything, they want the job they have to earn it. I have rehab-ed a few employees over the years, in itself it is kind of a rewarding feeling to have a former employee come back ten or fifteen years later to say thanks for helping them straighten up.

It is not real hard to do when a lot of them are like beaten dogs, so used to negativity that it is all they know, and never having seen trust and fairness or simply kindness, they can latch on to that to pull themselves up. Some steal your shit and move on.

I believe this fellow has to realize that life is not a Polly Shore movie set where you get praise and bonus' for being silly and goofing off. This guy has potential, he can learn. I just need to hit the right buttons to make him go. I won't give him a chance, but I will show him where it is.

Funny how this discussion is turning!

Just so ya know(if ya don't already).....I like a quart of the clear stuff and a few beers around the camp fire on Saturday night now and again.

Had a good buddy in college, used to carpool to UPS (this is back in the day BEFORE piss testing IIRC), he kept something like a 3.7 GPA or better... smoked like a stack.

He swore he could study better, focus and do better in school with doobage.

(Of course I lost a bet to him once involving inserting onesself into a commercial clothes dryer...

Xdigit- although you keep putting down Beavis and Butthead, truth be told, I could write new season material for 6 years or so based on me and my buddies childhood/adolescence... I thought the original stuff Mike Judge did with B&B was brilliant and still do- and I miss "King of the Hill". His writing only got better with that show...

Hey Vern- let me know how your work situation works out.
