Personally, I say legalize it, tax it, and treat it like alcohol in terms of purchase, DUI, etc.

That is how I feel about the subject. If it were legalized, the price would probably go down...alot. It is easy to grow, and grows quickly. Part of the reason that the price is high for illegal drugs is because they are illegal. the price is boosted due to the risk factor.

If it were to be legalized, you would probably see an initial surge in pot use. People that had not tried it before because it was illegal may be tempted to try it if it was made legal. I also think that this surge would die back down once the novelty wore off. People that do not drink to excess now are not going to want to get baked on pot either.

quote:
Well... it is much easier to display effects from alcohol than pot.

Wrong, I can spot a pothead a mile away.

So which is it? Or are you gifted with some secret ability that nobody else has?

Simply put, it is easier for police officers to observe the effects of alcohol than of THC. The majority or police officers working today do not smoke pot or have ever smoked pot so they are not a as qualified to observe the effects of pot. Anything strange to a cop is a "you must be on something" observance. Without actually know what it is like... you just don't know. plus there are so many drugs out there.

But I have been around Beavis's and Buttheads enough to know what they do and act like. So... yea you can spot a stoner pretty easy if you know what to look for. Gets much easier if you know the person.

You really think the nanny staters are going to allow you to create second hand pot smoke?

I've been really surprised when on more than one occasion I encountered that (second hand pot smoke) while sitting on my Uly in traffic around town.

There was a gigantic plume of burning pot plants in Honduras. Evidently, they were burning a field.

I was instantly returned to the bus stop in high school.

"I was instantly returned to the bus stop in high school."

Duuuude....

Must've been some serious kind bud...

My dear aunt had to battle cancer twice- beat it into remission the first time, but it came back. She was prescribed Marinol pills, but hated them because they would just wallop her with their potency in pill form. She knew that being able to smoke it would allow for a much finer ability to moderate the "dosage" so to speak...

Arrangements were made to get her what she needed.

BTW Xdigit- I believe all LEO's do have to undergo training to observe and evaluate many different kinds of things besides alcohol- most of the LEO's I know would be able to spot someone stoned or methed out or whatever...

I say legalize it. Aside from the THC aspect, we're missing a HUGE industrial opportunity by lumping pot in with hemp.

If pots were legal ...... Only legals would have pots.

Put me in the "could care less" column.

But I think our multibillion $$$$ " war on drugs", in which we've summarily gotten our asses kicked......stands as stark evidence of how well the government does things.

Perhaps taxing it and returning cellphone costs to the old $1.00 per minute could help the king of hope and change pull his ass out of the sling..

I saw something very wrong today. It was during an Obama speech where he continued to explain that the rich need to be taxed more because the have-nots need it. (Or something along those lines) I thought is was especially disturbing because of the smiles and head nods and overjoyed clapping of the audience.

Club Drug 10,ooo buy in. Flight out to Johnson Atoll, shoot, smoke, snore, freebase, meth, gobble pills all you want, etc. - all you can get.
You can come back after 90 days of sobriety.

Run the C-141's out there - and put that destination on the map.
Yep - I am betting that the repeat visitors are very few - most will die of overdose - but hell, at least they aint out in the normal society.

Plus having hippies all in one place.... should cut down on the domestic supply of lawyers too.

I think we should legalize.

I have never smoked; I find more than enough trouble at the bottom of a whisky bottle, but I don't condemn those who do smoke.

IMAGINE the tax revenue. The gov could HAMMER users with tax, and it would still be cheaper than it is on a streetcorner. The catch would be, finding a way to tax "home-grown"...

Cripes, look at how much they tax alcohol now, and it (honestly) does more damage to your body than pot does!

...and what would it do to road rage? eliminate it? : )

I think that once the lynch mob is done with cigarettes, making them illegal except in your home or in your yard if you have kids.....etc. etc. then pot will just join cigarettes in being legal but highly restrictive to use especially in public. Then... the only problem is the many additional traffic accidents and beavis and butheads walking around.

Legalize, don't legalize it. Has no bearing on my personal life, so I could care less. However, I'm sure to the disdain of many on here, I also support smoking bans in public. I'm still unclear on where I'd draw the line if I had to write the legislation myself, but I absolutely HATE cigarette smoke. Nothing is better than going out to a restaurant or bar and not coming home smelling like an ashtry. Except maybe walking in through the door where the smokers convene.

Do whatever you want to your body, but do it responsibly for others. Don't drink and drive/fly/operate/etc., so the same applies for any intoxicant. I'd also push the smoking ban into this category. Your freedom to consume whatever you like shouldn't impinge on those who don't. Most smokers don't realize the impact of their smoking because they aren't as sensitive to the smoke. Personally speaking, I hate riding down my favorite mountain road behind a smoker...be it cigarette, pipe, or cigar. Pot would be just as bad. Same goes for while I'm on my local roads running with my dogs. Don't even get me started on the assholes who think the world is their ashtray!

Hybrid I am sorry but I never ever met anybody who wanted weed and couldn't get it so the people stoned driving around are there as I type.
I don't smoke anything and don't like weed but if you want to smoke it smoke it. I would hope they could come up with an accurate THC test to bust people driving with an elevated count and give them the same penalty you would a drunk driver

Yes... this would be great. IMO. After it becomes legal... someone should fortify the weed with various multi-vitamins and maybe some B complex (5-hour energy) to keep you alert.

I don't know why some people think pot makes you non-violent... it may may you not care in some instances but if someone cuts you off driving, or butts in front of you in line or.. generally pisses you off in some way.... it won't make a difference whether your stoned or not, you will still be pissed. Violent are generally violent. But it may slow you down a little and not react so harshly (at first). But, that will also be the case where your help may be desperately needed too in another type of incident.
(fire/car accident/mugging/witness etc. etc.)

Where have your ever heard of anyone who did a crime that WAS stoned on pot... admit they were stoned on pot?? (extremely rare) Pot smokers are the most deceiving people around when it comes to their habits. (buying/selling/growing/smoking) And that will probably continue after it becomes legal (with the restrictive laws in place) Just like all the drunks that stupidly get behind the wheel and drive. They have had years and years in the practice of deceiving.

After it becomes legal... there will have to be laws put in place that protects normal people from these potential risks. Similar to drunk driving, Drunk and disorderly, disorderly conduct or whatnot)... etc etc. (maybe new one will develop over time)

Like it or not, if you are stoned... you ARE Beavis and Butt-Head.

Put me on the list of conservatives who really doesn't care either. Never smoked it, don't really care too. But I have a hard time distinguishing between a good big cigar (which I enjoy) and something else.

Make the laws address the bad behavior.

My only concern would be what would happen when a disneyesque corporate machine gets behind it to market it... but there are ways to manage that risk.

Of note- Most states' DUI laws are worded to include ALL forms of impairment (including by things currently illegal like pot).

Here is a rough example... Take one guy... buzzed on beer, one guy buzzed on weed, and another straight guy. Ask each person for directions, (to somewhere they know) then..., you give them each directions to another place. Which person will be easiest to determine is in which condition? (by observing their behavior while receiving directions) And that makes me wonder who would get to the destination first? Hey, that might be a funny Reality show... (walking of course...maybe in a large mall)

I am sure there are police that have smoked weed and know what it is like. But without actually knowing... it is not as easy for them.

Thoughts?

I agree if we can also keep it's consumption, at least smoking, out of public places.

Why out of public places?

Both pot and alcohol are physically detrimental to the human body. In moderation, both can be enjoyed without significant damage.

The difference is social acceptance.

Regulate quality. Regulate potency. Regulate access.

No different than alcohol.

You can't keep the smoke to yourself like you can a beer. I don't want to smell it there or come home from a baseball game, park, or concert smelling like pot.

The existing smoking laws would probably mostly cover it.

Agreed. Smoke is different.

That said, "pot bars" would be regulated differently than general establishments.

General bars would lose non-pot smoking customers given open smoking of pot.

Here, smoking in restaurants is illegal unless the establishment is 21 and older ONLY. Bars that allowed under 21 folks discovered that they lost customers who sought to smoke and drink.

They made a decision. Which allowed them the greatest opportunity to make money, under 21 allowed with no smoking or 21 and over only where smoking is allowed.

Pot allowed or not would be a similar decision making process. If someone felt they could establish and run a "pot bar" profitably, they could establish it. If you didn't want to be exposed to second hand pot smoke, you, like folks who don't want to be exposed to second hand cigarette smoke, wouldn't frequent that establishment.

Jonathan's is a popular sports bar here locally. It is a non-smoking establishment. I frequent it because I don't want to be exposed to second hand smoke while watching sporting events and eating there.

Stogie's is a cigar bar I frequent when I want to enjoy a cigar and a brew.

I don't see pot being any different. Both are public establishments.

Vape it. No smoke. No real smell. Tastes worse and the effect is a little different but no tars, smoke etc in the lungs.

Eat it. Good roughage...keeps ya regular. Much different effect.
