Just talked to T9r at 0815 this morning. He was able to get a U-Haul, and is on his way home. Will get back to us later. Dave

Well crap- I just now got that message... glad to hear he's mobile once again...

Vince (AKA Dragonslayer) lives/works around that area, or not too far off IIRC...

T9r, post up as to what the problem was, and how things have worked out...

Tore the primary cover off, where I thought the problem was... there was no problem there... which means the problem is deeper in the engine. Significant tear down is required to investigate. So it is in the motor side of the bike and I just changed the oil too.

Thanks for the calls guys, it was nice to hear from fellow believers.

To further elaborate on the issues the bike was exhibiting:

When pulling the throttle from the air box I heard a strange whistle sound along with the typical sucking air sound. Shortly after noticing that I heard from what sounded like the primary cover side of the bike a schrill when pulling on the throttle and the engine under load (at speed). Pretty much the sound of a bearing going bad.

After so many hundreds of miles of hearing this the engine finally went pop (small pop) and stopped. I pulled off along the side of the interstate and the bike would turn over but not start.

I have to clean the garage up before I can hack into this large project. Maybe I'll finish working on the S3 and get it back together first. Sigh.

The testing of my faith, with this bike, will produce endurance (so I can keep these bikes.

A quick check:

Pull the oil filter, cut it apart, and pull out the filter element and look at it. If you find metallic debris .....

My new $10 mobile 1 oil filter... true it does me no good now and the problem solving begins.

I'll check. That is what I was thinking the next step would be. I'll be sure to use metal sheers (or the like) to minimize metal shavings coming from cutting the side wall of the filter with a hack saw.

Before you do that and make a big mess take one of those pen style extending magnets and put it down in your oil tank. A similar scenario happened to me a few years back and I had metal shavings, well, more like shrapnel in my oil bag.

I will try the magnet in the oil tank as well.

When I changed the oil a week or so ago there were minimal metal shavings on the magnet... the typical amount (which could be a sign).

I took the magnet to the inside of the oil tank and this is what I got. I did it twice and got the same amount both times. So I would imagine the filter is in about the same condition.

This was my problem. I hope it's not yours. Although I pulled out alot more shaving than you did. Turned out my connecting rod bearings were toast. The cage for the front connecting rod bearings was COMPLETELY gone and several of the bearings themselves were squared off.
