Since most good projects start with a shopping list I will show you what is newly in house for the Jeep.

A semi-fresh set of 15"x9" six bolt steel wheels off from Craig's List. Cleaned up the bead area and installed new valve stems.....good to go.

My POS Harbor Freight tire machine. After I welded it to the trailer and re welded many of it's parts it is still with us.

Someone asked what tires am I going to run. Craig's List to the rescue again.

Blue wrenching the U bolts. Gotta re-use them. About $60 replacement value if I were to just cut them off. A little time for a little money.

Back to work.....more later.

Good tire choice. TSL's ROCK...hope you have some really good axles...those tires have some HOOK! I killed one set of modified stock axles (D35/D30) and a second set of (D30/8.25"..that set had air lockers and moly axles).. with a set of those before I went to a 35 spline 9" in the rear and a hi pinion 60 in the front.

But man, it that stuff FUN!!! (until you are frame deep in gumbo with a destroyed drivetrain) ; )

This is a preview of how the 38s should look when the chevy axles are in place. I have a bit of work to do on this project.

Those hard doors will not be there in the future. I have the canvas ones that match the top. These metal ones cannot close because they hit the front roll bar.

Aren't Jeeps cool?

Yep. It is legal here in Tennessee.

I have the rear axle stuck up under it now, going to work on new spring pads and shock mounts tomorrow.

This could take some serious effort. I only have about an hour and a half a day to work on it. I'm hoping to hire some new help into my shop in the next week or so. That should help a lot. They work on trucks.....I do everything needed to support them and when I can I work on my projects. It has been a while since I laid everyone off.

I sold my Uly today and am picking up a 2002 TJ Wrangler Sport soft-top 4.0 liter that we traded for at the dealership I work at. At least I will still have a thread I can be involved in until my next Buell comes along.

Mark, it is almost time for the trail proven test of what really needs to be where on your Jeep.

That is where you go trail riding for a weekend. You pick up what ever broke off to tote it home where you decide if it was an important part. If the vehicle kept moving the parts that broke off are in the "is it really necessary to put it back on" category.

The basic rule of parts goes like this:
1. If the jeep quits moving because of a broken part, it was essential.
2. If it limped home without it, but caused noticeable problems, it was important.
3.If it had no effect on the vehicle's ability to get you through, it needs to be a legal part or a proper farkle to go back on.

Well the progression on my Jeep build has been slow but it's getting there.............. slowly. Kids, work and life has been taking all my time. My upcoming wedding has been taking all my money.

sorry for the crappy cell phone pics

Frame repair......

Lift Kit......

engine removal......

strip engine & paint it......

I'm hoping to have the engine back together and installed by the end of the month. Still have to paint the plenum, intake & other bits of the engine to finish that up. It's getting there but it's definitely taking some time.

Jim, Jim, Jim.....First ya gotta figure out what is important to you! Do you want to be happily married or do your want to hit the trails and be riding permagrin in the mud and rocks with your buddies?

If she is the right one she will let you finish the jeep so that you can take her on a jamboree for your honeymoon!

hey Verne, yes the Jeep farkle is commencing...I got my Quadratec catalog in a couple days ago.

Mark, If you ever go for a wheel/tire swap I would like a shot at buying the original wheels if you put em up for sale...mine has a crappy set of after markets on it and with the laws in VA it is hard to run a big lift and big tires, so I would like to switch back to a nice stock set.

keep posting the pics of all the progress, I will join in hopefully in the near future.

they are probably not large enough for you, there are close to stock size...the current tires are 30/9.50's.

I am just looking to snag a set of nice stockers from someone who upgrades to bigs.

Big tires don't necessarily mean really big wheels. These are 15x9 wheels with 12.50x38s on them. I like a narrower wheel to keep them from catching on rocks and such.

Here is an update. New ride height is the cat's ass!

A little plasma action cleaning up for new perches and shock mounts.

Perches in place, pinion angle set.

Now to deal with the mess on the front.

Everything is placement now, the rear will need axle and pinion seals, wheel cylinders, brake line, park brake cables brake shoes, and installation kit. The front axle will need overhauled too, including all of the universal joints!

I wish I had time to prep and paint everything as I go along. But if there is any chance of making it to Mark's shindig in mid August some short cuts from the original plans must be had.

Besides, I can always disassemble and paint it later. I know a place.....

Any one have ideas on how I am gonna get my old fatness in and out of my Jeep?

I am thinking rope ladder type deal. It has to be quick, cheap, easy to use and store, and I will probably need one for the passenger also. It cannot hang down in a permanent fashion because it will hang up and get ripped off. Ground based ladders can be useless for off road mud and rough trails.

The bottom of the door opening is going to end up around 41". My standing high jump is about 12" and my running high jump is real close to 12". I have fairly bad knees(dirt bikes.....duh)and a bad back. I am for sure overweight and about as flexible as a cement block.

Any ideas here?

Ropes and velcro?

Work the length based on all angles of approach...

Have a talented seamstress work a rope/velcro ladder of the proper length, handstraps and such with 2X stitching...

And extra velcro...

For both sides, and the back.

Can you mount a Hoverround 4X4 on the bumper hitch?

Some one used to sell a stir up on a rope, with a hook on the other end, that you just threw over the door jamb.
