A while back Casey Anthony was walking in the woods with her daughter.
Her little girl said, "Mommy I'm scared". Casey looked at her daughter, smiled, then said, "You're scared? How do you think I feel? I have to walk back alone!"

Now the Pic at the beginning was mildly funny the joke made me cringe.

The Casey Anthony trial is a prime example of why you never want to put your fate into the hands of 12 people who were too stupid to get out of jury duty.

In this case a murderer walks, for now anyway. Ultimately she'll stand before the Supreme Judge.

+1. Court is always a crap shoot. Still our system is among the best in the world.

Speaking of getting out of jury duty, has anyone else never been called for jury duty. I've been wondering for decades if they do a culling of names from the pool before they even send notices out. Yes there's something in my past that would pretty much have a lawyer pulling me from the pool every time.

My wife got on a jury where 11 wanted to let the guy go even though they felt he was guilty. She stood her ground and convicted the guy. The judge was aware of how the deliberations went and had a bailiff ask her to see him before she left. The judge told her she did the right thing. Then he asked if she was related to me. Damn legal system has me pegged!

Jury duty...I sat two years ago on one...81 year old old lady had grabbed a cop's arm after he had been sent out because of a dispute with her neighbor, whose dog kept crapping in her yard.

Cop told the old lady to stand aside...old lady reached out and grabbed the cop to get his attention when he turned away...275 pound weight lifter/lives in the gym when he is not on duty...completely full of himself and drunk on power sort of cop.

The charge was assault on a law enforcement officer...this old lady was barely able to walk all 80 or 90 pounds of her wrinkled up old a$$ into the courtroom.

What a waste of MY tax money and time.

We decided the old lady was not guilty, and recommended that the "officer" have additional training in public relations.
When he testified, he was such a freakin' douche...Hope I catch him running a stop sign with my GoPro one day....all he was missing on his uniform were the SS lightning bolts and the death's head.

And guess what?....I got a summons yesterday to appear for jury duty again...next month....I will do my civic duty...but I hope it is not a waste, like the last time....I'll be sure to shave my head and brush my beard out before going.

Maybe I'll get assigned to a baby killer case.

It pisses me off that some of the people that bitch about the outcome of trials, are the same people who have bragged about getting out of jury duty. Or talked about how they pleaded with a judge, that they couldn't serve.

Don't want crappy court outcomes, show up and do your duty. Maybe if more people did so, "those too stupid to get out of jury duty", wouldn't be on the jury to begin with.

There will come a time when juries will simply be done away with. Elections as well. If you don't participate in your rights and freedoms, you loose them.

I have been called to jury duty, but being in law enforcement I was dismissed even though I really wanted to serve. Normally law enforcement just send in the form stating they are law enforcement and they don't have to actually appear. I tried my best to get selected but couldn't. I view it as a privilege and duty to serve as a juror. Of course it is an inconvenience, and I understand for some it is a financial hardship, but if we can't get people to serve, how can we expect to have a judicial system to work as it was intended.

I do have to say that I have been involved in cases where I just could not understand what the jury was thinking. It simply demonstrated to me that I am out of touch with what many Americans believe is right. I followed the Anthony trial fairly closely, and I have to say I don't see how a reasonable person can have reasonable doubt that she killed her daughter. Has CSI made people think there will be a video of every crime?

We are overdue for professional jurors. I first thought this on hearing the OJ verdict, now I'm convinced.

Every time I've been called, I've been tossed out on peremptory challenges. Except the last one (strong arm robbery) I was empanelled but they settled so again, we were dismissed.

What interests me about this discussion is the fact that a lot of you have convicted this girl with no real evidence.

The system worked the way it was intended to. Better that 100 guilty men go free than to convict a single innocent man.

She knows what she did. We don't. Period.

God knows... and no punishment we can give would serve any real purpose.

I've been tapped 3 times. First one was a civil matter that settled before it came to us. Second letter I got I called in every day but my group # was never called. Last one was a criminal assault/ robbery with a hand gun trial. Took us 3 days, but he was convicted. The interesting part about the third one was a defense attorney that was also a law professor sat on our jury. First time in our counties history that happened. He said at the end that being in that jury room will change the way he teaches and practices law forever.

Convicted her with no real evidence? Really?

Let's see, off the top of my head,

High levels of chloroform found in her trunk. Computer searches for chloroform when her mother, who said she conducted them was logged onto her work computer.

Duct tape over her mouth, but her attorney's explanation is that she accidentally drowned.

Multiple lies to her family, her friends, and law enforcement about where her daughter was.

The smell of death in her trunk that was experienced by several people.

The lifestyle she continued to live, entering a hot bodies contest and getting a beautiful life tattoo when her daughter was lying in the woods decomposing.

All of those facts are certainly circumstantial evidence, but they are evidence nonetheless. The standard is beyond a reasonable doubt, not beyond any doubt. Proof beyond a reasonable doubt is proof of such a convincing character that you would be willing to rely and act upon it without hesitation in the most important of your own affairs. However, it does not mean an absolute certainty.

I believe the standard was met. I think that if you asked the jurors of they believe Casey Anthony is guilty they would say yes. I believe they applied too high a standard to the burden of proof they required.

I was called into jury duty for the first time last year (I'm 59). I asked the judge if I could be excused. I told him I run my own company and have 20 employees. I said that I do take vacations but it takes a little planning.

He asked me "What do your employees do when you're away?"

I said "Probably not much."

He grinned and said I was dismissed.

There was some other similar show where they had to play Prince of Persia on the Xbox for 10 levels (a game that doesn't number stages), and then magically an Excel spreadsheet opened with all the incriminating data.

Back related to the subject, I won't comment on the verdict, as I honestly didn't even hear of this trial till after the fact so I don't know enough to have an opinion. Regarding jury duty, I've never done it (I'm 25, guess its just a matter of time), but you can bet your ass I'll be there for it. It is the least I can do for this country, and one day I might be on the other side of the bench and would like a fair trial with peers that aren't more concerned with their unfinished TPS reports at work or missing a new episode of The Price is Right.

Dan,

You seem to be forgetting that the defense as part of opening statements (not entered as evidence or testimony) said that she drowned in a pool. Don't you see how that raises a reasonable doubt?

Of course it would have been more convincing if we had testimony from whoever found her in the pool.

If she is not guilty for at least manslaughter or criminal negligence, why is Scott Peterson still in jail?
