Well I'm stuck on an industrial park just outside Lyon waiting for a load that's not ready til 10 tomorrow.
Boredom setting in, had enough of reading so surfing (slowly, more like drifting) the web on the phone.

Anyway the Doobie Brothers "Long Train Running" just played on the radio, it'q a great song but there's one little bit that just ruins it for me every time I hear it.

It's the part where he sings "well the pistons keep on turning & the wheels go round & round."

Well I'm sorry but that offends me, if his pistons are turning there's something seriously wrong with his locomotive, & the wheels won't be going round at all.

Rant over, told you I was bored.

Got any more?

CCR-Proud Mary

"Big wheel keep on turnin',
Proud Mary keep on burnin',
Rollin', rollin', rollin' on the river"

I have never rolled on a river!

Rolling down the highway hurts a bit too.

If in a kayak, one may "roll" on the river as needed...

You would be rollin' IN the river, not ON it! (He said pedantry was Ok in this thread!)

On a steam locomotive, the pistons are directly attached to the wheel(s), and therefore do in fact "turn" in a round about way (pun intended).

It makes sense in my head...

Nope, that's reciprocating motion at the piston being turned into rotary motion by means of a con-rod & crank-pin.

Mr. Grumpy: Maybe it's a rotary engine in his long train?

The one that makes my teeth itch & my hair hurt is Gerry Rafferty's - "Right Down the Line"

"You've been as constant as the northern star, The brightest light that shines"

Bunk, bunk, bunk - The Northern Star is not the brightest star or close to it. Just barely middling observed intensity. - Bunk, bunk, bunk

Pity, because I really like the song.

I always thought the line would have worked better technically as "the pistons keep on churning...", because they basically make a churning motion.

Of course the following line is very cool: "And the steel rail lies cold and hard and the miles they go down." (something like that)

There are a lot of good train lyrics in blues, rock, and country songs.

Pistons keep on turning (the wheels).

(Keep the good times) Rollin' on a River.

Not hard.
