OK, I've been looking around online a bit today, thought I'd ask the peeps here- other than just replacing it ($$$), what can be done to fix my 12" subwoofer? The foam around the cone is shot, obviously sounds like crap now, and I just got a new set of Polk Audios on my A channel, so I'm gonna have to do something... There are a couple of outfits that offer to repair the foam and restore the speaker- everything from re-coning, replacing the diaphragm, etc. The speaker itself is only a few years old, so I'm thinking maybe just to pull it out of the cabinet and ship it off for a new foam strip, but I've no experience with anyone offering this repair. (Of course, I may have to get creative with some duct tape and a hairdryer first, but I'm looking for a real fix...) Ideas? Recommendations? Thanks in advance youn's... | ||

If it is just the foam surround, buy a repair kit and replace the sound. If the voice coil is gone than you will need a little more involved repair. There is a place in California that has surround replacements for most speakers that you can buy or you can send it to them and have them do it. How much would it cost to just replace the driver as a unit? My dad had his Acoustic Research speakers reconed for like $11 each and he said they sound mint. But a subwoofer? perhaps just get a new driver and drop it in the cabinet. Then you get a really kick-ass fridge magnet! (Use a heat gun to soften the glue holding the steel to the ceramic magnet) | ||

Compare having the surround redone, and replacing the speaker. Get the specs on the driver (spend a little quality time with Google) and talk to a radio/speaker/electronics repair shop and have them find one that is a match for the parameters of the stocker. Probably be cheaper that you think. R | ||

Yeah, I'm probably gonna send it off and have it refurbished- the thing is really not that old, so I doubt anything but the foam is fubar... (And- gotta pay more attention to the little red mark I put on the volume knob for safe jammin parameters...) Thanks again folks! | ||

My son, who plays bass in a band and who's "day job" is as an audio book producer, normally recones unless there is damage to the drive coil. This normally keeps things better matched to the original specs. G | ||

I had a local speaker shop rebuild the 12" woofers in my CerwinVega front speakers several years ago when the speakers were at least 12 years old. Sounded like new and they even had the CW coil covers. Cost <$50 | ||

My rings disintegrated a couple of years ago. Found a place I think in New York that had a new foam kit for somewhere between $25 to $50 for the pair. Came with the rings, glue, and new center caps (gotta cut them out to center the cones while you glue the rings). Much better than replacing with a sub that is not designed and matched for your cabinet.  | ||

I had a shop in Columbus, OH rebuild mine about 5 years ago. I think it was $80 for 4 speakers... well worth it! | ||

There is a place in St. Paul that fixes speakers. I've had everything from Advents, JBL's, Altec's you name it done there. Home stereo, pro sound reinforcement, PC speakers..... They kick butt... Midwest Speaker is the name of the place. They have been around for many years, all the pros bring their stuff there. midwestspeaker.com Brad |
