Just got off a phone interview with UNC- Chapel Hill. Apparently I answered one of the basics wrong. Damn it! They asked me some really hard questions. I friggin hate that. Thrown entirely off guard. Still waiting to hear from Honeywell in Charleston South Carolina. I think I will call them Monday. Oh well! I tried!

I hate interviews - I've never felt like I've had a good one, and it's probably the number one reason why I don't look for other jobs. No matter how much prep I do, I feel like I'm never really prepared for the questions they ask.

Good luck with the hunt

Well... usually they start with an easy question like "Tell us about your experience." They jumped into a technical question that not too many people would really understand... and I blanked out on the name of the regulation... F*#^ !!! Oh well, it didn't pay as much as I wanted anyhow... will keep looking...

I am bad at interviews. Always have been. It hard for me to "get" a job. I've started at the bottom at almost every job I've had, but have always gotten multiple promotions and raises. Some people are like that.

Others interview well, then flop when it's time to do the job. Don't beat yourself up. You are a quality person, who will have the right job find you : )

I've designed the recruiting process for a- (a dash = temp) contractors at microsoft through a global solutions provider. (was tough but learned a ton). I'm technical, not HR, so a bit out of my typical realm. Worked with a lot of HR folks and learned a lot.

I think that everyone gets stumped by a tough question - the hard part is composing yourself and instilling confidence that you do know it, just not off the top of your head. Confidence in general usually pays off. over confident/cocky can be a death blow to any interview though, which most people know, but you'd be surprised.

I like interviewing - both to hire people, and when looking at getting a new job. I've done a lot of interviews for prospective folks, which when it's your turn can really help. I just switched from consulting to a full time job and was in a position to dictate terms which was a first! hehehe.

Being in a position of not needing the job (already have one, or self employed) and the ability to convey that without rubbing it in their face can be helpful.

but hey - i'm not HR... just a geek and take that for what it's worth.

Either way - sorry to hear it didn't work out (did they call and say "no thanks"?). Best of luck with Honeywell!

I walked into an interview to back up a variety of people (four different IT disciplines) (after my VP Bro-in-law got me in the door) that turned out to be a technical interview panel with their top guy from each group.
One guy asked one question, two guys looked at my resume and declined to ask me a question and the last guy grilled me for 30min, made me look like a chump and sank my prospects.

oops

Onward and upward!!

Sometimes they have a strategy of throwing out an impossible question to see how you handle it.
I find if I don't know a thing, it is best to come right out and say that.

Another thing to keep on mind: If they ask you STUPID questions, you don't want to work there.
Example:
One interviewer asked me "What type of thing about you makes your mom the proudest of you?" or something stupid like that.
He read it from some notes too!
I asked him if he was seriously asking me that as a part of a JOB interview.
He said yes.
I can't even remember if I answered it at all. It was at that point that I realized that they didn't need my butt there and I certainly didn't want to work for that pinhead.

The job was keeping watch overnight shift of a satellite communication company and logging boring numbers all night.

About 4 months after the interview, the place was sold out to Verizon and then liquidated.
See any satellite dishes there now?

Nope.

You will find the correct job.
Be persistent.
We're all rooting for you.

It was a tough technical question which was completely relevant. That is the thing... however, I did answer it right, just not in the right detail, because this is usually something they might ask after talking to someone for 1/2 hour. I think they were screening the weenies and the fakers out. They probably had 30 people to screen because it was a state job/ at a state university.

Interviews are such a PITA. I tend to think you should model your responses on Morgan Freeman's parole speech near the end of "Shawshank Redemption".

I still remember the first job interview I had at college. The faculty had actually had a "coaching" class and advised us what to expect. They told a story of how one guy had been asked a fairly tough technical question (calculating overall ratios for planetary gear sets) and how he sailed through the solution because he just happened to be studying them a couple of days earlier. The interviewer was very impressed and made him a high salary offer on the spot. I tried to go over a bunch of similar stuff before this interview, and I was all psyched to answer tough technical questions.

The FIRST question out of the guy's mouth was "What epitaph would you want on your tombstone?" WTF? I'm sure he could read those words on my face. I didn't have a clue, and eventually gave him some BS response about how I'd rather have some device or engine named after me. I got an offer, but that didn't mean much, because they were so desperate in those days I think they gave everybody an offer that had a degree!

Let me know if you get an interview in Charleston- I'll be glad to show you around. BTW- I have a friend who's on a cross-country trip on his F650GS right now. He'll be back in a couple of weeks, and he generally doesn't keep bikes long, so maybe he'll make you a deal on it!

meh, it beats not even getting a call back. I am seeing that most recruiters, HR, 'talent acquisition' reps spend 15-20 seconds on a resume. and these generalists by in large have NO idea what they are looking at.
case in point - Business Intelligence does NOT equal Military Intelligence.
And what nit wit decided to start branding the IT dept 'Business Intelligence'
I dont know how many flippin pedantic Indian emails I get because they key word searched and hit that speed bump in my resume.
Its SPOOK, not TECH - learn the f'n difference.

This is the first time I have had to deal with phone interviews. Every other time I have had in person interviews. I am not too sure what this is about, except that I am applying over a broader geographic area than usual and I am 'new' to the area, having not lived here for 20 years. I think it would be much more desireable to have an in person interview... but like I said this was definitely a screening process... being that they asked 5 questions in a 15 minute period. As with a lot of gov jobs they may have the position already filled and are just going through the motions. Next week I am printing up my resume and starting to knock on doors. That should be real fun... NOT !!!

Don't worry, I have been off on sick leave for the last 30 days, I am thinking of releasing a tarantula spider when I get back to the office. Don't take work too seriously.....unless you are a doctor.

I have been applying since I have been off and have not been contacted by anybody, but I have the answer for the question:

One interviewer asked me "What type of thing about you makes your mom the proudest of you?"
Me: Nothing, my mom thinks I'm a F*%king ahole.
And I have a mom who I know loves me.

Well, if you need to fill in the recent gap in your resume, I'll tell anyone who inquires you've been a contract consultant to my company as a geologist scouting for algae farm sites through the Sunbelt between CA & FL. I'll say, based on your travel thread, you are a very good communicator, diligent, self-starter, able to stay within the scope of a project, and extremely efficient in preparing reports. Hettiger R&D, since 2005. My associate, an environmentalist and industrial designer, started an international company (which he later sold) while still at university. And he rides a motorcycle. His wife's name was Jan and your local college neighbors probably "sport" backpacks and book bags with the company name.

Sure, it's a manipulation of the facts, but we don't want you underemployed when a BMW is at stake.

Then again . . .

I want one of the old 650's that has been beat to crap and is still running so I can beat it to crap some more !!! What else is the point of getting off road ??? I might even go smaller to start, picking up a 400 pound machine is not really my forte as I have ripped out my lower back repeatedly in sports and work incidents. Last time I could not walk for three days... oh well... gonna have to bite the bullet and hit the beach today. Life is so hard !!!

+1 on self employment. The trick is to do what you truly want to be doing. Work should be a satisfying way of life, not time in harness.

'what do you want on your tombstone'?

Um, you havent been following along well, when the 'clensing' starts they will be putting bodies 20-30 at a time in big plastic liners from Georgia, I doubt they will bother with an inscription.

Not to hi-jack Charlottes thread, but I had to purchase a liner, very much like in the video, to bury my Mother.
The casket goes inside the liner to keep any bodily fluids/decomposition from entering the ground water. Explains why the property would be leased by the CDC as was reported in the video.
I'm not an expert, but it was explained to me that the law requires such a "vault" in order to bury someone traditionally.
Just my experience...

Yeah I get a laugh out of the Fema Coffin stuff. If the NWO was planning to kill all of us then wouldn't they want coffins in a central location like the Midwest. I would have to assume that the death of most the country would tend to disrupt travel a bit. How are they going to get the coffins to Cali before people start to rot.

It's all good though because i have a tin foil hat.
