OK, so I'm thinking about digging out my old YSR50 and tearing the probably rusted solid motor out and getting it back on the road. Looking for either an XR100 or possibly XR200 and need to find a way to increase the generator/alternator to handle the lights. Anyone familiar with these XR machines?

Well, crap- I dug through my browser archives trying to recover a Craigslist link to a local guy who had advertised "1987 YSR 125"... posting deleted.

Dude had stuffed a CR125 motor in that thing, gawwd I'dve loved to buy that thing and run it through the Gap!

Mebbe you can find some owner's groups...

They are wicked fun with the 50, doubling the power with a 200 would be awesome.

The XR100 is pretty much a bolt in, but you are only about even with the horsepower unless you spend a lot of money on engine mods, so I'm thinking I want to try and stuff a 200 4 cycle in there. People have done many YZ125 and YZ250 conversions, but I want to get to a 4 cycle engine.

You won't be able to read it without becoming a member, but here is an XR200 conversion that looks pretty nice. Since I now know that I'll need about $1000 to fix my 9R, this will probably have to wait (again).

Greg- why do you want to make it a 4-stroke? To me, that would be killing the 2smoker spirit of the thing- not to mention that apples to apples, most 4-stroke motors are heavier and obviously down on power compared to a 2-stroke motor...

Just my $.02, but good luck anyhoo- keep us posted on your progress!

The exhaust on a 125 or 250 2 stroke is really hard to fit. The expansion chamber volume must be shaped for the volume of gas coming out and there is barely room for a proper 80cc chamber. You lose a lot of power when you start cutting and shaping the larger chambers.

I also want to be able to just pull up to the pump and fill it, the oil injection is not good enough to handle the needs and many of the off road engines are not oil injected anyway.

Hmm- good point on the exhaust, hadn't thought about that...

I once had an RZ350, which had the YPVS variable height exhaust port- I wonder if there are other 2smoke singles that employed a similar system. If so, that may make it easier to tune/customize the exhaust without too much trouble...

I just miss the glorious smell of burnt Yamalube- nothing like it!

Mebbe a latter-day 4banger motocross motor? They're more compact and powerful now than they've ever been...

Have you checked out any YSR owner's groups, or 2stroke groups online?

Keep on keepin on...
