Holy crap Roy... you are an INSURANCE AGENT (in other words one step above ambulance chasing lawyers)...

leave the big IT discussions to people who know what the difference is between a Gulftown and Nehalem.

MAC vs PC is so tired... find something else to get worked up about. Like not trying to rip off your customer when someone knocks his bike over.

I manage the team and help support 2000+ systems, including a small department of macs, and 21 ships spread out around the world over satellite links (ugh slow).

Greg - if you look at some of the older netbooks you can add the mini pcix hardware decoder for HD video (BCM970012 Crystal HD is one), but lose wifi on some models. Kind of a big trade off unless you go usb wifi.

I enjoy my iPad - great mobile device w 3G especially. Mainly for email, quick browsing, and meetings (one note for iPad rocks!). Otherwise i can run most i need on my unlocked Nexus one. Android OS is pretty amazing...

MCITP EA was a tough one, avoided the CCNA! Good luck with both!

You have no credibility whatsoever plus you have your own website - like you are too big for Facebook! LMFreakingAO.

seriously this is one of the most asinine posts i've ever read.

A blast = no credibility?!?

And a website vs Facebook?!?
You obviously don't know what it takes to build a site and maintain one.
And ignorantly you don't know facebook harvests and sells your info for profit.

Those are really compelling points... just against your intelligence.

As for the Blast comment - maybe he has a crap insurance agent and the budget saving to commute on the blast for gas and FU*KING INSURANCE saves enough to have other toys?!

Unlike you, I've seen Froggy help folks with INTELLIGENT posts. Multiple times he's been the guy to point out the fix when someone needed help. I've seen you contribute absolutely ZERO besides Mac Fanboy BS.

Who has credibility now? An insurance agent who spouts sh!t he has no idea what he's talking about? Or an IT professional who takes time to help a small community of fellow riders?

shut up or go away. go overcharge someone and give them nothing in return.

LOL - and as for your comments above - bite me.

You started it by calling out and questioning someone's credibility i respect, and many respect as he's EARNED IT.

I live in seattle, was a bouncer/doorman through both WTO riots, am 6'8" 260lbs. You are laughable calling me a little man. But honestly i don't mind as i don't expect much better.

You are welcome to let me know when you are in town. we can grab a coffee and chat. If you want more than a chat, you're welcome to size me up before getting your ass handed to you. Or just have your coffee and keep your mouth shut.

Sl33py and the others, thank you. I was trying to figure out how having my own website since the mid 90's (a Pokemon site I made in Notepad using HTML) made me too good for facebook or something.

Sorry about that, back to your normal Android/Apple/Certifications discussion : )

Greg - you've got a great game plan. It's a lot of work, but it sounds like you have a reasonable timeline to complete.

Portability in a tablet is awesome, and it sounds like you have horsepower if/when you need it (if you are transcoding at least). My system in process specifically for this is a dual Gulfy Xeon (chilled) w/ 48GB RAM, and all SSD (OCZ Revo x2 480GB) w/ some c300 storage drives. My dream build. : )

What do you use for your encoding/transcoding? I've tried everything from handbrake to RipBot264, plus several others. Finally settled on Pavtube (paid) as a great all-in-one solution.

I've had some great luck with both hyper-v on 2008 R2(should have demo media with your books), VMWare (of course), and for desktop VM's i like Sun Virtualbox (free) or VMWare workstation.

Win7 is easy compared to the 2008 and network components of the MCITP.

Good luck!

I just grabbed a simple application called h.264 encoder, seems to be built on FFMpeg, had to use it because AVIdemux wouldn't see the the Camtasia encoded source files that they use.

I made another discovery that I don't remember if it made it to post... The encodes I did at full resolution are smaller (file size) than their 320x240 files. I still need to work that into a message and send them an example of how they should be doing things. They may be information geeks, but they apparently know nothing about video.

After watching another video during lunch, I think I want to buy something with a larger screen. The 4.3 inch Archos does do the job but it would be nice to have a larger display like a 7 inch 16:9 or 8 inch 4:3, think I can get either for less than $100 shipped but need to look around a little.

Sorry I caused a fight, feel free to delete anything off topic.

Madduck, according to a quick websearch, Microsoft has a free trial download called Digital Image Starter Edition 2006 that will open the .mix files, you can apparently use that to convert them to something like like jpeg

On a slightly similar topic... I'm slowly going paperless, and now have quite a few Zinio subscriptions plus getting a lot of work documents as pdf's. I use my laptop to read everything at the moment but would like something smaller and lighter. I figure my options are:
Small netbook,
iPad,
Cheap tablet like a ViewSonic or,
More expensive tablet like a Galaxy.

Can you read pdf's on any Android tablet?
Zinio works on PC or iPad and an Android version is on it's way. I've heard there's a work around to get Zinio to work on an Android tablet, and it does work on a Samsung Galaxy. (Possibly a Blackberry Zinio version is coming too, but the screen is too small for reading magazines I think)

Any suggestions? Pros/cons? A small netbook seems like the best value for money option, but I'm curious about iPad's and tablets.

Can any of the above be charged from a USB port? I'm thinking about how to recharge it on an international flight.

cheers,
chili

Chili - i'd need to dig a bit, but any Kindle possibilities? I've had the 1, 2, 2i, and 3. Just gifted the old v1 to a coworker (college kid receptionist).

absolutely amazing in the sunlight, only B+W but great for books. PDF to kindle is easy w/ Calibre. Tough part might be zinio to kindle. i'll look.

I love the 2+ weeks batt life of my K3, plus it's fast enough for emergency google mail when nothing else works (and "free"!).

and they charge from USB when you finally need to charge them!

Short answer, yes. There are a few PDF applications available, if one doesn't work on yours for whatever reason, another will work. App compatibility is the biggest drawback of Android just due to the vast amount of devices that run it. With Apple, you have 4 iPhones and 2 iPads to support, so it is better in that regard.

Not to make it sound like nothing works on Android, but even using the brand new tablet optimized Android 3.0 I'd say 80% of the apps I've tried work flawless, the rest either don't work, crash a lot, or just don't support the high res screen and run as a small window. Being that my device and OS is very new, the software writers haven't had a chance to make them tablet friendly.

I had a lower success rate on my cheapo android tablet running 2.1, it didn't even come with Google App Market so I had to hack the thing just to get access to the decent apps, and then they were more likely to crash or not work right.

As for charging, I am not aware of any tablet that can charge over USB, the power requirements are too great. It would be like heating a house using just matches. Battery life isn't an issue though, my Xoom will last 10 hours of constant heavy use including leaving the GPS on and tethering via Bluetooth to my phone.

If you are just reading things, an e-reader is your best bet. The black and white e-ink screen is amazing and easy on your eyes, and battery life is next to forever. Down side, it’s black and white.

PDF on Android is pretty lacking, the official Adobe version is decent but not like a computer. The Dell Inspiron convertible seems like the best choice for what you want to do because it will actually do everything. You may need to upgrade the OS because I think it may only come with Win7 starter and you will want Home Premium or Pro.

I agree the Kindle is fantastic for what it does, wish they would build in real PDF support, then I'd buy one.

If you want to play with a tablet on Android, I suggest one of the Android 2.2 or higher cheapo devices and give it a spin. You could see if anyone near you has an Archos or Arnova, Arnova is supposed to have capacitive touchscreen very soon and still under $200USD for the 10 inch version. Most of the cheap devices are single touch resistive screens. Some can charge from USB, some need a higher voltage to charge. Just about all of them should have an optional 12volt charger for car power port, can you adapt that to airplane?

Thanks guys, that's a big help.

but any Kindle possibilities?
I've heard great things about the Kindle and being able to read outside. I didn't realise that pdf conversion was easily possible, so I'm going to have to check one out. At the moment the work stuff I'm reading tends to have a lot of charts and graphs so black & white may be the deal breaker. There is rumour of a color version.
It doesn't sound like anyone has a Zinio to pdf converter.

Short answer, yes. There are a few PDF applications available, if one doesn't work on yours for whatever reason, another will work.
Cool, I can work with that.

I guess I'm used to my laptop (HP ProBook) is lucky to last 2 hours on battery. If I can get 6 hours+ out of any device then charging on a plane isn't an issue.

I hadn't seen the Dell Inspiron Duo convertible... to me, that is COOL and would cover all bases. Even Win 7 Starter would probably do most of what I want initially. I wonder what battery life is like?

PC Mag Duo Review

Battery life is easily the Duo's weakest link and the ultimate price paid for its good looks. There was enough room for a 30WH battery, which is equivalent to the 4-cell battery found in the Lenovo S10-3t. By comparison, the NF310-A01, the 1015PEM, and the AOD255 come standard with 6-cell batteries that lasted between 7 to 8 hours, according to MobileMark 2007 tests. Lasting just 3 hours, 18 minutes, the Duo is clearly not efficient enough as a road device. At least with the S10-3t (3:39), which didn't score that much better, you can buy an additional battery to take with you; the Duo's is non-removable.

My Samsung QX410 laptop will go 6 hours of surfing the web as long as I stay away from video content or piles of Flash.

I'm still thinking about the Flytouch because it has a small USB keyboard available and has a wired ethernet jack. If I put one of the Linux for Arm processor distributions on there I should be able to use it for real work on a network (like programming routers), should be able to get a USB to RS232 adapter working if I can get Linux running which will cover most bases. I also VNC into the server KVM so that would be helpful too.

Not going to jump into it though and may even wait until they have Honeycomb or at least dual real core processors. One thing to note, many of the ebay idiots are selling these are 1.2Ghz dual core machines, this is not corect. Later down the description they will list them as 800mhz processor + 400mhz DSP or GPU, this does not equal dual cores! DOn't get sucked into this. Also as of last night there were a slug of the ripoff devices listed for very good prices for a single day auction and buy it now... Guess schools are out for the summer and the scammers are hard at work stealing money for tuition next year.

After more reading, it seems that the Arm 11 processor in these things is pretty old. Apparently what one now wants is the Arm Cortex A8 or better. I'm going to start wandering through this place and see what I can find, but this tablet was recommended as being decent:
http://www.ankaka.com/tab-t23-android-23-tablet-fl ash102-wifi-8-touch-screen-12-ghz-cpu-512mb-ddr2-r am-1080p-hdmi-output-black_p48022.html

And it is cheaper than the Flytouch 3 which I find out is not real tablet but some kind of upgraded variant.

How does the ARM family compare to the Intel Atom family in terms of power consumption and performance?

I bought my mom a netbook for under $300 and it had an Atom CPU. Battery life is quite good. I think she gets tired before it discharges : )

I'm a big fanboy of netbooks. I bought an EEE PC years ago when I was first able to do so.
I'm still using it as the hub of my entertainment center at home.

n

The black thing on the bottom shelf is 1T USB drive, almost full : )

I upgraded the EEE's operating system a few times over the years and finally settled on a remixed version of ubuntu called "eeebuntu"
It originally came with Xandros which was only good for getting me into "non windows" operating systems.

Things I find most important in selecting a portable little PC:
USB ports
Decent battery life
Size
Ability to upgrade/change operating systems at will.

Some tablets don't let you "IN" without being hacked. I hate that.
I bought it.
I OWN it.

It is hard to compare the two, they have two totally different architecture and instruction sets. Both will do great for battery life as they are mobile optimized, but one is designed for phones, the other designed for portable laptops/netbooks running x86 operating systems like Windows and Linux.

i got my hands on the new Dell 10" android slate...

Nice, but not Android 3.0 and a bit chunky dimensions (mine was pre-release so maybe not final form factor).

seemed snappy otherwise and decent screen. Was told they were releasing in europe but not the US. kinda a tease i guess. I'd keep my iPad over it honestly.
