It will drain a battery in a couple of hours(good batteries).Won't notify me of some messages that were left for me. Won't ring a lot of times. This started a couple weeks ago when it got wet. I have a couple of $3.00 eBay Startacs that I bought a few years ago for replacements/parts if this one went bad. I'm hearing now that Verizon WON"T active those old Startacs. Great phone. Makes calls and takes calls....and takes a beating. I log maybe 30-90 minutes a month....and DON"T want to upgrade. What to do??? I think I'm screwed/forced into an upgrade that will cost more ...or a pre paid plan that won't allow me to keep my old number. Or maybe shitcan it and be done with cell phones.Crap!

I dunno specifically about your model, but federal law dictates that every cell phone in the US must be E911 compliant, or removed permanently from the network at the first opportunity.

As long as a cell phone which pre-dates E911 is active, it can survive on the network. But the moment that a non-compliant phone needs repair or changes ownership, the cellco is required by law to detect it and ban it from the network.

That may be why you can't get your other StarTac's activated.

I had this happen to me, a few years ago. I had a perfectly good old handset, and foolishly took it in for a repair. The moment the tech got his hands on it, without saying anything, he went to a terminal and typed in a bunch of stuff. He handed the handset back to me and told me it was a non-compliant handset he was required, by law, to deactivate it.

All of a sudden, I had no cell service, and I had to buy another phone.

Nice, eh?

You need to swap it for one of the new digital basic Motorolas. I go 3-5 days between charges and use it quite often. Never turn it off anymore.

I loved my StarTac, but I had to get rid of it a couple of years ago when Verizon won't active a spare one I had when I started to have problems with it. I was quoted the 911 reason. I just replaced my cell phone, the replacement for the StarTac, that was going thru a battery with a 10 minute call.
I ended up getting a new phone for free from Verizon, by signing up for another 2 years. It was that or buy a new battery for 20 bucks. Since I've used Verizon forever, I didn't see this as a problem.

I looked at all the damned phones in Wal*Nards this morning.......what a bunch of junk.......compared to the Startac. The only phone that I though I could live with was the Mil spec Motorola Quantico....rubber and somewhat waterproof....but it is US Cellular...........Verizon has been good to me and most of my users are also Verizon($Mobile to mobile$). After Monday,I could be off the cell phone grid. Really shouldn't be that big of a deal......but it's been handy a few times.

Zip,

Did you lose any cell towers around you lately? If your phone is struggling to find a good signal most of the day, the battery will die within hours. Maybe simply updating the preferred roaming list will help. Talk to your provider's tech staff.

My local tower is about 600 yards away..and yes,it was struggling to find a tower. Seems there was a number to dial to update the roaming. Found that number to be *228. Hit that and PRESTO..........my phone is all good again...........
