I spent six weeks in Cuernavaca, Mexico at a Spanish school way back in the seventies. It was cool because none of the teachers could speak English. They used the US government Spanish course at the time. I learned how to find the bathroom and how to buy a beer. : ) I would recommend it plus Costa Rica is a fascinating country if you avoid the Caribbean side.

"I learned how to find the bathroom and how to buy a beer"

See, I would have learned how to buy beer, and let the other work itself out.

Seriously though, they claim immersion is the best way to learn a language.

Costa Rica is a great place. Very safe and the people are friendly. Lot's of neat stuff to see. I can imagine retiring there one day.

Yes, Bluefields is not in the tourist brochure.

Way back, the president might be found sitting on a park bench eating lunch.

My daughter went for 5 weeks in 2009 and loved it. She lived with a family that only spoke spanish. Went to the university tues-thurs and traveled with a group of girls that were doing the same thing for the weekend. Tell her to travel in a group and all will be fine.

of course we didnt have Ipod technology then...
Go for it, it will be one of those events that she will REGRET not doing.

I hope she has fun, and enjoys the trip.

At the same time I have made a personal decision not to go to South America with out being armed and with a couple armed friends.

All I have to do is go to Home Depot. Everybody is speaking Spanish, and all the signs are in Spanish.

We have been hearing nothing but good things about the camp and Costa Rica. It has been a country I have had on the "need to visit" list for quite a while. I know a few folks who have spent a lot of time down there. It is much different than most of Central America.

As a parent this sort of thing makes me nervous but is likely no more dangerous than handing her the keys to the car on Saturday night.

One of my young (26) co-workers is headed to Costa Rica next week for 10 days.

I'm having lunch with her tomorrow and will learn more but the impression I got, from a brief meeting today, was that it . . as long as you minded simple common sense . . was a very nice place to visit.

Yeah, it seems to have been so poor (no gold or silver) and so lightly populated that the Spanish never bother to exploit and brutalize the people so they developed into a nation in sort of natural manner. Very strong democracy and although poor they are not hopeless. Life is pretty good so people are pretty happy.

Plenty of Yanks buy a house on the Pacific side and retire there. Good doctors who went to school here.

You are giving her photography lessons . . . right?

One of the sharpest kids I've ever met . . I'm betting she'll have a great time, learn a lot and have some amazing tales. The young lady is quite amazing.

Panama and Costa Rica are big on the expat landing zones. they have some great info, insight, and heads up. In my opinion several notches above lonely planet. give them a look.

(I am not connected with them in any manner of sorts, but they are indeed book marked to my favorites)

Hmmm.

My GF is Dominican, dad is still there, sometime soon I'm determined to see that she gets to head back and see him. Hopefully with me in tow.

From what she's told me, I may have second thoughts about coming back...

Fun thread.
