it amazes me how many people are "reviewing" it and admit to never having read it.

Not unlike putting your endorsement on a 2600 page bill that you never read.... even more so for twice in a month !

It has the Progressives/Socialists/Communists running scared. For years they've been telling us that movie and television don't have any effect on people. They absolutely know the truth, that short of bribery they are the most effective means to influence people, especially young people. Al Gore knows it and he was rewarded for his work of fiction by all like-minded Progressives/Socialists supporting it.

Now we have another work of fiction, but one that illustrates incredibly well an inconvenient truth that offends liberals, so they oppose it out of hand. It's too late for them to admit that such a convincing film, a revelation of truth concerning the failure of government activism/socialism may have far-reaching impact politically. If they admit that fact contrary to what they've been asserting for decades and decades now, they lose all credibility. So they try to belittle and deride it. It will backfire. The best thing they can do is to start panning the film just like they did Gibson's Passion of the Christ, which then went on to unprecedented success.

Hypocrites.

Hubris, that.

Running scared? The book's been out for 50 years and pretty much languished as a literature class novel until Glenn Beck did his part pitching it to his anxious social Darwinists. Those folks are bound to be the primary audience; a date flick this ain't. This particular film adaptation is not going to change the book's literary standing, and with its relatively unknown cast and director it isn't likely to be a critically acclaimed film, either.

By choosing this method of ideological dissemination, The Market will ultimately decide if the book's/film's message is accepted.

I will be surprised if Part II gets made.

Only if the market has a chance to see it, which right now it is being denied.

We in SoCal are discussing this and we will go out of our way to vote with our dollars to see this film. We urge you to do the same. If the movie is good and a cadre of Conservatives give it some box office, then it will go into general distribution.

I don't think there is a conspiracy to withhold the film from the public but marketing has decided that this movie is not main stream enough to warrant getting it to the People.

Avatar, this ain't.

It might be a crappy movie. I don't know. I haven't seen it. But I think the novel should be required reading in high school. It is that good.

Sorry if this offends some of our minority Badweb Socialist/Communist aspirations. The looters and moochers of our society must and will be stopped. One way or the other.

Define languish.
But I think the novel should be required reading in high school.
Don't know when it changed, we didn't have to read the whole thing, but two of the speeches, I continued on and read the whole book for the first time when I was a junior in high school.
We also had to read 1984, and Animal Farm.

Would you like to make up your own mind as too who needs help, and how to help, or have help mandated by government, and force you to pay for that help regardless of how you feel?

Incorrect. I read it in high school.

Anyway, enjoy the film. Portrayals of dystopias are usually thought-provoking and that's good.

I'm a Mad Max dystopia kinda guy, myself.

I agree; Progressivism/Socialism = dystopia. Well noted.

Apparently you've misremembered the sub-plots full of intrigue, sex, violence and also some cool sci-fi techno schemes. Horrible stuff for an entertaining film? Best go find a copy of Heidi instead.

that it was on the reading list in highschool is impressive. Fountainhead was on our BANNED list, which is exactly why I read it.
that led me to her other works

I was not popular with the school administration. I had teachers that liked me, but the principals, and vice principals.... well I was a frequent visitor.

Remember the dystopia of "The Handmaid's Tale"?

Just saying, dystopia comes in many flavors.

So that's a condition for a film to be critically acclaimed? That must suck for those low-budget, unknown-cast film festival pictures, some of which do end up being pretty good.

Date movie? Well, Mrs. Strato (who shares a birthday with Ayn Rand) couldn't believe that it was actually being made into a movie, and can't wait to go see it with me; I'm sure it wont be showing in Lethbridge, so it will be an excellent reason for a road trip..............

Interesting. I think we've been somewhat used. The reply from one of our local theater chains in Longview, Texas.

Dear Carmike Customer,

You recently sent us an email asking about when, and if, we were going to play the film “ATLAS SHRUGGED”. You asked we bring the film to your local theatre on April 15.

You were directed by the “Atlas Shrugged” web page to email your local theatre if you were interested in having this film play at your neighborhood theatre. They have since changed their web page asking that you instead look on line at your local theatre’s web page for dates and times. The reason for this change is the distributor of the film is in the process of changing their distribution plan for the film. It is solely their decision as to which markets and theatres will play their film.

Every film has its own unique marketing and distribution plan. The distributor of “ATLAS SHRUGGED” also has a plan. As of today, on April 15 this film will open in a very few selected markets and in only a few theatres in many of those markets. Some markets will play on an exclusive basis. It is scheduled to open in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Columbus, GA., Dallas, Denver, Kansas City, Knoxville, Los Angeles, Miami, Mobile, Nashville, New York City, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Richmond, VA., San Francisco, Seattle, and Washington D.C. Following this release, the film will then expand in a “roll-out” pattern; each week additional market5s and theaters will be added.

Carmike’s plan is to open the film in the theatres selected by the distributor on the date they offer us. Please continue to check our web site and your local theater for dates and show times. We will be opening the film in Columbus, GA, Nashville (Franklin), and Mobile on April 15. We will have additional markets and theatres on April 22 and more on April 29. These have not been determined at this time.

I have seen this film and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Thank you for thinking of Carmike Cinemas when it comes to selecting your movie theatre of choice. Thank you for your email. We like to hear from our customers.

Regards,

John Lundin
V.P. Film

It is interesting. Perhaps it's simply because the players involved don't have particularly deep pockets to jump in with both feet. The "demand it" feature on the movie site may be their way to justify spending the money on additional releases.

Keep demanding it and it just may come. Eventually.

From a press release:

About “The Strike” Productions: “The Strike” Productions, Inc. was created by producers John Aglialoro and Harmon Kaslow as a new production company for the sole purpose of producing a trilogy of films based on Ayn Rand’s epic novel, “Atlas Shrugged.”

About Rocky Mountain Pictures: Rocky Mountain Pictures is a “distributor for hire” who acts as a liaison between the independent producer/distributor and the exhibitors.

Or you can log onto The Atlasphere and organize a group ride to the nearest theater.

Heh. The Atlasphere has a dating service.

Thing is, what the movie house executive says in his email to me is not accurate. The www.atlasshruggedpart1.com site is still imploring folks to demand the film in their area, and it is listed as playing on 4/15 at a number of cities other than the movie house VP mentioned.

Who knows.

Demand it to come to your town, doesn't necessarily mean opening night.
The movie will run as all movies do, where there's a market.
If no one asks it to come to their town, why try to show it there.
It's feeling out the market, if Warner Brothers, 20th Century Fox, or the like were distributing it, they wouldn't need to find where the audience is, they'd promote it heavily, and "create" a market.
As it is, they're pretty much on their own, doing what they can with what they've got.

Saw it Sunday with my #1 boy.

Was at first showing out in Delafield. Small crowd in theatre.

Pretty interesting to see on film. If you can, see it.

Got the book from S.I.L. and my boy will be reading it.

This is Part 1.

Had you read the book first? I've been wondering how this movie will be understood by those who have read the book vs. those who haven't.

Some how I don't trust the word of a movie critic on most movies, much less anything with a political message.

I found it to be what we are seeing around us right now with the back-channel backroom dealings, the regulations that continue to erode confidence that our gov't ISN'T out to get those of us that want to be productive capitalists!

As noted above, my 13 year-old boy was taking it all in as he has been reading/listening (going through that boy-to-man phase) to all the local and national news around us.

I've got to put some time aside and read the book.

I'd recommend going.
