We lost our big dog today. She had developed lung problems so we had to have her euthanized. She was 15, a rescue, 90 lbs of Rottweiler cross and one of the barkingest, sweetest dogs you could ever hope to meet. We got her just before she was two. Previously she had been used as a bait dog for fighting pit bulls. She is a big loss but it was time to let her go and to end her suffering. We already have her replacement, another "Heinz" dog who is the antithesis of the dog he is replacing. RIP Rowan.
Same here, sorry that you lost one... good on ya to go ahead and rescue another.
9/23 a year ago is when we tragically lost my GF's dog Chloe, unexpectedly, way too soon. We don't know the greater plan, but, she left a huge hole in our lives that day.
Yesterday, my honey acknowledged that "Rocky" the JR/Chihuahua mix had been working all this time, since we adopted him, to be "her" dog.
They know, and time heals. Rocky knows he's been rescued, and we know he's the best set of paws to follow Chloe's footsteps.
Give 'em a treat! Around here, they are the first part of the dishwashing cycle, "Pre-rinse".
What if there was a way to salvage/preserve the DNA of a great dog?
My rescue Basenji is snoozing beside me, and he's proven to be not only a gorgeous specimen of a rare breed, but also with great character and personality. Also, we lost a truly "perfect" mutt last year, irreplaceable for behavior and spirit.
Given that rescue animals are regularly spayed/neutered, could or should there be a way to preserve and send forward their DNA? I understand a little about genetics to know that cloning is possible, maybe even doable for the right $$$.
Without the gonads of the animal, would cells from the teeth or nails be useful...
