Can anyone recommend a good insurance carrier? I've had all my bikes with dairyland for years. Clean record. 38yo male. Because my status went from "married" to "single" they bumped my premiums $500 a year.

I call BS. I'm shopping. Any suggestions?

Well... I've had Progressive for years - and when I had "issues" more than a decade back, I had a warrant and lost my license until I straightened it out - and even with all that, they never cancelled me but they DID raise my rates (they're back down now)

I'm an old fart so what I pay is pretty cheap for a car, a truck and 2 motorcycles so don't quote my rates.

You might shoot Richie Morris a note about Geico and see if he has a specific contact that you might approach about insurance who will also give him some good props for Eslick and the Geico/Buell (now Suzuki) team.

Wow, Joe - that sucks! No one at Dairyland will work with you? There are a lot of riders who work there - you would think they
"get it."

I've never found a better offer than Dairyland's.

Geico is really willing to work with you. I still have progressive but that's only because they can cut me a lot of slack for being with them for so long. I stay in touch with Geico and if they can even match my rates at Progressive, I'll jump ship.

One thing is that I refuse to make payments on any vehicle so I don't need to carry any form of collision. (but my "fleet" average mileage is almost 200,000 miles)

To me, the real test is when it comes time for the insurer to pay a claim.

I recently dropped Geico - had an accident a couple of years ago and they stalled and stalled and stalled on payment for my nifty ambulance ride. I had to threaten a breach of contract suit before they paid up. (Amazingly, the check was cut the next day after delaying for 9 months).

I really like Farmer's: had a garage break-in on Feb. 28. They didn't touch the bikes, but made off with about $4 grand in tools. Got my check within a week of sending the documentation. No hassle, no fuss.

As a side note: Progressive was the most expensive quote I got for the 1125R at $1400/yr. Farmers was $400.

Been very pleased with Geico for about 12 years now. Nothing negative to report about them.

I've never had a claim and have been with GEICO for a number of years.

Some of this information about GEICO is a bit disconcerting.

I pay quite a bit as I carry the max limits. I want to make certain if anything, after 30+ years of riding without a single claim) ever does happen that I get the service I'm paying a couple hundred a month for.

Matt, Court - I'm not dissing your decision; I too had Geico for all my vehicles for years. When I did have a claim, I felt like I wasn't treated right, but that's just me. Plus - they spend way too much of my money on self-promotion, and seemed to be much less willing to spend that money on taking care of me (honoring the contract). My experiences may be atypical.

ALL insurance companies are crooks! Get use to it! Our state has mandatory insurance and the rates increased overnight when that was passed into law. They saw the opportunity to really stick it to their customers and did so!

Progressive saved me over $700 a year versus my old state farm.

I went from $1300 ( State Farm) a year to $550 a year with DOUBLE the coverage!!

I still have my house and cars through State Farm, but the bike is now with progressive.

I was in an insurance office once where the lady in the cube over was dealing with Dairy Land, I told myself I'd NEVER use Dairy Land after hearing them go back and forth!

I guess experiences can vary. A buddy of mine had Geico when he wrecked his Ducati on the 7th day of ownership. The bike was a cosmetic total and I really though he was going to get creamed on the "used" value. He got a brand new bike, they paid his ambulance and hospital bill with no problems. He would have been a very happy person if he had been wearing his jacket.

Hey Joe- I'm with Safeco for both the Shovel and the 05 XB9SX- met my agent whilst still working at Smoky Mountain HD/BUELL.

Given that you once were hooked into the biker scene in a similar way (IIRC), can you call upon anyone in a similar way? Do you "know someone who knows someone"?

Good luck, buddy- even though I'm in TN, shoot me a PM if you want to talk to my agent...

BTW- I gotta thank you, Joe- I started looking through my card wallet for my REQUIRED insurance cards for my truck and two bikes- ALL of them were expired!

The po-po don't care if you've got an expired card, same as no insurance.

Of course, my current bike insurance card was in my pile of slightly read mail, now waiting on Farm Bureau to email me my truck insurance card...

D'oohh!!!

Youn's don't make my mistake, check those dates!!

Court, regarding GEICO:

I had an unscheduled stop into the back end of a Yukon on my Z1000.

I took a somersault onto the sidewalk and was able to the ride the bike to work and I fixed my own headlights and foot peg. I didn't file a claim.... HOWEVER:

The two occupants of the Yukon both went to the hospital AFTER they drove away from the scene and we exchanged information. I carried full coverage, and I did indeed put a little crease in the chrome strip on their bumper. But, as I mentioned, after they left, they called for medical attention and were transported to a nearby hospital while complaining of back and neck pain. This all happened within an hour of the accident.

Someone from GEICO called me and asked me to give a statement about what happened, EXACTLY. I had taken pictures of the scene and the damage to my bike and their bumper. I emailed it all to him, and he told me about them going to the hospital. They were obviously trying to game the system. The adjuster guy took care of everything and I never had to hear about it again. My rates did NOT go up one cent. I was very satisfied with their response to this, and the way it was handled.

I have 100% confidence in GEICO and I carry full coverage on my bike and a $1,000,000 commercial policy on my van. Their customer service is stellar.

I was at the Gwinnett County Tag Office today, transferring the title of all my vehicles over to Georgia. I had California proof of insurance. Not good enough for Georgia DMV. I called GEICO and within 5 minutes I had the electronic filing I required and it came right up on the DMV computer. I let the first person who answered the phone know I was standing at the counter at the tag office, and they expedited my call to the right department immediately. Before I got off the phone, each of the 3 people I had spoken with wanted to know if there was any other way they could provide me with excellent service.

I let them know they exceeded my expectations, as usual.

Between you and Crusty, I'm guessing that owning a Uly leads to singleship!

I am paying out the nose for Progressive, but you know my record, and they have taken care of me beyond my expectations.

I must have had a stingy agent.... It did literally take a threat of action to get action. Glad you guys have what sounds like exemplary service.

I'd imagine it works much the same in the US as over here.

We're with AXA here in France.
They're not necessarily the cheapest, but the cover is excellent & the agent is superb.
Nothing is too much trouble & any problems are taken care of with no fuss.

That sort of service is worth paying for, to my mind.

Well I got what appears to be a smokin' quote from Progressive last night. I need to call back and verify - it was a voicemail, I had to read FIVE VIN numbers to the nice lady. "um, can I put this together and call you back?" She did but I was unable to answer when she called, but the quote she gave me for all five bikes was - get this - THIRTY PERCENT of what I was paying Dairyland. $1800 a year down to $600. For five Buells. Wow. Same coverage levels, same deductibles, everything.

I didn't realize how bad Dairyland was screwing me. I just figured "eh...it's five bikes...it's gonna be a lot". Like Court, I don't mind paying good money if the coverage / service is there...but if I can get the same coverage for 30% of the cost? Even a dimwit like ME can figure that one out! : )
