Anyone into RC cars, trucks, planes?

I just bought a 2004 toyota high lux 1:10 scale 4x4 truck kit. It took me about 30 hours to build it from scratch and paint it up. This is the first RC i have had and built in 12 yrs.

After a little mudding i put on the new wheels and tires i just got.

It has a 3 speed tranny and 4 wheel drive with 4 wheel sreering.

I was into them for awhile. Have mostly traxxas stuff. Tried the helicopters but never had much luck keeping them in the air.... : (

Now it's all sitting in my shop collecting dust....

Oh I thought this was about Royal Crown cola- my fave by far... (jk)

On a similar note, didja see 60 Minutes tonite? Dude took his lifelong RC hobby, mutated it into a sweeet gig in wildlife photography- INCREDIBLE what he's done!!!

The polar bear stuff alone is priceless...

I drove a real hilux when ever I was in Afghanistan. I am not a toyota fan but I did like that truck and wonder why they do not sell them here in the states.

I have a drawer of trophies I won from RC car races.I used to have 7 cars in all, and sold a lot of them off the last 15 years or so. I'm now looking into the small 4WD ones so the kid can play too. The new 1/4 scale buggies are AWESOME!!!! I like small planes too, and have a couple radio/electric drive systems for them sitting around waiting to take flight. Just waitin for the hobby money to grow a bit.

I've been toying with the idea of a rock crawler kit, but the funds just aren't there between needing a new car, keeping the Buell going, fixing a boat, etc.

If it weren't for the pliers, and the in house shots, it would be hard to tell that was an RC

Translucent or candy paint on the inside of light lenses and outside of marker lamps really makes them pop. A superfine sharpie in the door jambs, cowl vents and body lines makes them look very realistic. Someone used to sell a complete lighting kit that included head, stop, tail and even working turn signals. The driver's head from a super champ (dating myself, ain't I) on a kid's toy hero doll makes a great driver. Used to have a Bruiser back in the early eighties, with all the bells and whistles. Home-made 2.5:1 gear reduction between motor and transmission, 1.5" lift kit, 10" tall tires, dual shocks.... with the stock tires it rock crawled great. If you haven't already, replace every bushing with bearings. The transmission is a bit tricky to dis-assemble... but has a bunch of bushings in it as well. The output shafts really need the bearings. Pull out the rubber plugs and wd-40 the tranny every other time you run it. If they still have you smearing silicone sealant on the tranny case seams... DON'T. That's where the dirty oil self-drains from.

I race RC offroad. 4 weeks ago, I build an RC8B, 1/8 scale buggy from Team Associated. It's really fast and easy to drive. I've been racing off and on for 25 years. When I would fall on the BMX track and break a bone, I'd race RC for 3 months than go back to BMX.

Here, let me spend some of your money for you:
http://www.2wheelhobbies.com/

The Venom 1/8 come well recommended as a starter machine, but you really need a smooth place to run them. Which puts you squarely into future debt with a 1/5 scale.

From what I hear, yes it is. The nitros go stupid fast, a few guys have even built two speed transmissions for them, I'm told the sound when shifting is just the thing that they lack. The above picture does not have the front and rear brake kits (yes these do have real brakes), what you see if for show.

I have an older electric Thunder Tiger, but haven't gotten the hang of it yet and haven't spent enough time learning. Need to go to a bigger lot.

And the hot setups are now running belt drives. Less weight (by a lot) and less friction.

Preybird1,
Wow that thing looks really cool. It isn't a 2004 hilux though. I have a 1982 and it looks just like my truck. Or did you mean the kit was a 2004? Anyway just an FYI :-)

It was made in 2004. The original high lux was built in 1978 and was the 3rd generation of the high lux models.

It was the most realistic of the Rc models i had seen, besides the ford f350 high lift and the toyota tundra high lift.
