From sifo

"In the case of government workers it gets even worse. They are paid by taxpayer dollars that have a portion involuntarily confiscated (union dues) to pay for the union. The union then contributes to political parties (without your consent) to ensure that more money gets sent their way. If this wasn't being done by the government, it would be prosecuted as money laundering."

What??? You do know that it is illegal for any unions to use union dues to contribute to political funding, right? There would be an absolute uproar from members and the media and the government if they did try to use dues to pay for contributions. I personally know of a UAW created political action committee called V-CAP.(VOLUNTARY community action program) Like stated its a voluntary contribution network for members to contribute to politics that help support union workers. Nothing is mandatory about it. And its only about 50% of members in the UAW that contribute to that fund. But hey, I heard the same thing you posted come out of Glenn becks mouth today. So it must be true.

As a mater of fact I don't know that it's illegal for unions to use union dues to contribute to to political funding.

quote:

First, unions are "Big Money." Of the top 10 sources of political contributions since 1989, according to the Center for Responsive Politics, five are unions. Of the top 20 sources of 2010 campaign funds, 10 are unions.

Union-funded lawmakers take money from taxpayers and give it the government unions, who kick some of it back to union-funded lawmakers. It's not too different from banks or defense contractors donating to politicians who bail them out or give them no-bid contracts.

In fact just recently the Supreme Court recently ruled that corporations can contribute just as unions have been allowed to do for decades. I would be interested if you can support your assertion however. I've just never heard that before, but have heard the opposite many times, from many sources, for many years.

Difference between contributing to political speach/PACs versus direct contributions to party or candidate.

If corporations and issues-oriented organizations and industry groups can contribute, why not unions? Why does that bother anybody? If corporations are people, according to the Supreme Court, why aren't unions people too?

Rainman they can they just have to use separate donations for a PAC I am a Union contractor unfortunatly and there are no items in the day to day operation of the unions for Political contributions.
Pac funds come back to locals pac from national Pacs at the national level its hard to tell if the funds coming back are just ( laundered by being cycled through national union) or are from Pac contributions by the membership. I would suspect some of both depending on who is in charge and how much the labor dept is really checking at the time. Construction locals seem to have more control in their territories than the NEA or the other white collar and pink collar unions.
