Congratulations, and good luck!

I've spent the past 5 and a half years in the Navy and although there are sacrifices that come with the job, there are also huge rewards.

Just a small piece of advice - do your homework and know exactly what you want before signing that contract. At this point, everyone you meet at MEPS essentially works for you. They can be very pushy to get you to sign up for any old job just to add you to their monthly quota. Know what you want, and make sure you get it. The military offers some amazing opportunities, just pick a job that fits you and will allow you to get the most out of those opportunities.

There will be bad days, just like any job. Generally speaking, you won't enjoy your first 2 years. Some enjoy it less than others (a lot depends on your attitude) but you'll be doing all of the b*tch work for a while before you prove yourself and start moving up. Don't let that discourage you. It gets better, a LOT better, and it will happen before you know it. It seems like yesterday I was at MEPS giving the oath of enlistment, now I'm a 24 year old E-5 in what is essentially a middle management position and life is oh so easy : )

Excellent! I work as a civilian at the USCG Academy. Knowing what I do now, I'd enlist in a heartbeat if I was young again! If you can deal with some of the nonsense, and make a career out of it, you can get a retirement before your 50. I have a number of friends who have retired from the Coast Guard, and while they all had some major struggles, they are all glad they stuck it out. Heck, maybe you'll make it to the Academy for OCS. Retire as an officer and you'll be set. Good luck to you!

Iman501 , what a great adventure your going to have. I was talking a a USCG Captain about 6 months to a year ago. We were both briefing newcomers at a orientation for the command and he had a great film showing a young Coastie drive a fast interdiction boat. He told me if he had to do it all over again THAT is what he would do.

The title 14 forces (USCG) are great. We have to rely on them for our missions all the time.

I used to see a commercial on every morning "USCG, Defenders of the Homeland" it was good. Hell, I would have to think about it if I had to do it all over again.

I agree with Phillip. He has been there.

Excellent ! Good for you, and us. Have you already signed on the dotted line ? If not make them give you everything you want and have it guaranteed in wrighting. Don't take any of the recruiters crap as he is a salesman and has to fill certain MOS' and they may not be the one you want. Remember he may as well be wearing a plaid sport jacket. Don't admit to trying or doing anything that there is no legal record of either as they can hold it against you years down the line NO WAIVERS. I wish I had joined and took a shot at their "rescue swimmer" MOS. You'll be coming to Dirty Jersey for boot right ? How long is boot for you ? You should be very proud of your decision to help others in need as well as killin' the folks who need killin'.

Iman I think I forgot to say thank you! Hope you make Swimmer!
My 2 best friends (like brothers) retired from the CG. Best thing they ever did. I can't tell you how many times I got jealous of the places and adventures they had.

Don't confuse them promising you specific training with promising you the actual job. That's all I got. Best wishes to you and thanks for your prospective service.

Looking good Iman, and don't think I was joking about any of what I said. They need you so let them prove it by GUARANTEEING your MOS !!! Don't fall for the old "I'm your pal" non-sense either if he asks if you ever smoked pot tell him you never even heard of pot, what is it?. If you are uncomfortable being demanding to a grown man in uniform that's fine, bring a father, uncle, friends dad or whatever. Just make sure you get what you want. You will never see that recruiter again so don't worry about being friends with him. Last I heard the USCG had one basic training facility and it was in Dirty Jersey. If so let us know when you are graduating, I'll take a ride to sit in the bleachers and watch you graduate ! Yeah that ARS or whatever you said it was is some high speed stuff, hard as hell from what I know as you don't just need to be a fish you need to be a fish that can perform surgery in an oil fire at night in 70ft. seas with sharks circling! Bad-ass for sure. Good luck young man.
