Ever get into a discussion/debate and someone will make a vague or generalized statement that on the surface might seem meaningful, but then when you think about it, really not so much? Some funny (really stupid) ones I recall over the years:

Erik Buell didn't invent the motorcycle.

The person who did invent the motorcycle didn't invent ZTL or most of current modern day motorcycle technology. He basically just put a motor on a bicycle.

That's just engineering for engineering's sake.

Engineering is the application of scientific and mathematical principles to achieve practical solutions such as the design, manufacture, and operation of efficient and economical structures, machines, processes, and systems.

Using science to achieve practical solutions for the sake of using science to achieve practical solutions? Huh? :/

The (brand/model X) is a better/superior motorcycle.

I defy anyone to define in tangible terms the idea of "better" or "superior" to fit the personal perspectives of every single motorcyclist. :/

(So-and-so group/individual) is intolerant.

That is an intolerant statement in and of itself. A declaration of intolerance in order to be meaningful requires the identification of the specific issue, a target. The specific item of intolerance is the issue, not that everything must be tolerated.

It's not all about money.

Neither is it all about other than money. Some is indeed about money.

You don't know everything.

You don't know nothing, meaning you may be expert in some things.

Buells are not the be-all-end-all of motorcycles.

Yes they are. joker

Seriously though, what motorcycle is the be-all-end-all of motorcycles? None.

Got any more?

I got accused of being an extreme controversy theorist because of my direct quotes from the health care bill that befuddled the arguements of the fan boys that hadnt read it.

I have since made it my signature on that board ; )

previously it was, if you like the bill, you havent read it. There was too much truthiness to that, apparently.

My street-racing bicycle has Campagnolo side-pull brakes. ZTL.

My Iron Horse Hollowpoint mountain bike has Hayes hydraulic disk brakes. NON-ZTL.

"Not for Nothing but..." I was lost the first time someone used that. And everything that followed made no sense to me. Who starts an opinion with "not for nothing" and expects to be taken seriously?
WTF- I understand.

That's kind of like when someone asks in a post "What are the 'best' tires?"

Depends on what you plan on doing with them.

Ever work on a BMW motorcycle?

2+ hours to change a battery on a R1150R.

45 minutes to rotate front brake assembly forward about 10 degrees.

That's just engineering for engineering's sake.

I agree with that one. Engineers do things not because it's needed, but because they can. Here's a comic to illustrate this point:

>>> Engineers do things not because it's needed, but because they can.

Then that would be "engineering for the engineer's sake", quite different.

Personally I enjoy the point in a thread where two bald men are fighting over a comb. Especially if I'm not one of them.

"When he said 'so-in-so' what he meant was..."
Used to be one of my favorites, now it just aggravates me.

Or when you post a few links to backup what you were saying, you get "those all say the same thing,"
that one still amuses me.

Yes. Reminded me of: In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. But in practice, there is.--Jan L. A. Van de Snepscheut.

. . . in a vague and generalized way. Photographic proof, links to references, footnotes, and some pudding displaying proof in it always helps.

That's not really "engineering for engineering's sake," that just says that the engineering did not think that ease of user maintenance or repair was important or was to actually be discouraged.

Of course, I'm an engineer!

"what call Peugeot then?"

Bad engineering. (Yep, I'm a P.E. too, 'cept I push dirt and play in the water, sometimes get to blow stuff up, not the train-drivin' kind). I refer you to the Allen-Bradley Turbo Entabulator to understand the art of engineering for engineering's sake.

The expressions that get to me are:

"You have a right to not be offended in the workplace" (What? I have a RIGHT to not be offended? how exactly does THAT work?)

"You're a racist!" Usually by someone who is not interested in actual facts or examples of whatever inequity one prefers to discuss.

"Did you find what you were looking for?", or "Is your food tasting OK?" only because there is precious little variance on these expressions, no matter what store or restaurant you patronize.
