That time of year again: The annual Crotona Midnight Run is next month.

Hopefully this is enough warning so Froggy (where IS Froggy??) can plan ahead.

My girl was just asking me when this run was. We couldn't make it last year but I think we will this year.

It was canceled last year due to blizzard, so you didn't miss anything. I think it was the first time in the entire history of the event that it was canceled, too.

Yeah, that year it was in the 40s!! Unbelievable. Usually it's in the teens!

CityX, if you've never done a timed run, you'd understand you're almost NEVER doing that speed. You have to hit each check point at a prescribed time BASED on 30 mph. That INCLUDES all stops, wrong turns (ever try to read a route sheet on a dark country road with no street lights??), etc. Most of the time you're riding like a maniac trying to make up for lost time.

It was fantastic last time, I can't wait for this years. They said no GPS allowed, but me riding without a GPS is like riding with a flat. I turned it and all my other goodies on after I left the parking lot to start the run, they never said anything at any of the checkpoints.

Last time I did great till I got into Putnam county, then the lack of street lights did me in. I somehow missed a checkpoint, but I still completed the race and got my medallion : D

My friend Bob Goldman (who has won that thing more years I can think of) uses a small LED light clipped to the map pouch so he can read the route. He lent a spare to my friend Mike that year I saw all of you guys off.

This run is a thing you can "Win"?
I thought it was just a thing to do.

How is the winner chosen? consistent times?

It's a "Timed Rally." Every rider (or three person team) is released in one minute intervals starting at midnight, with their start time noted.

You are required to average 30 mph between checkpoints, so you have an expected time at each checkpoint. If you hit that time EXACTLY, you get 0 points. Being early results in more points per minute than being late (to discourage unsafe riding).

At the end, the person with the fewest accumulated points is declared the winner. There are expert and novice classes. Everyone who completes the event successfully gets a medallion. Winners are given trophies at an Awards Banquet held a week or so later.

it is a SiKK trail bike, 125 cc (I have a 165kit coming for it) it is a cross between a mountain bike and a tiny crf
the motor is honda knock off
and it is all holligan fun. Perfect for the camp ground. It weighs about 160lb, and is too much fun, this weekend, I am going to rhino line the frame for 'stealth'

this is the one bike in the herd that I am trying to make QUIET !

and if the shaite ever comes down, it is my recon bike ; )

sikk is out of business now, but he has a hand full of these left. PM me if you are interested, as his website is down.

I'm with Frogster . . married to the GPS if only for the music. I'd likely do an all night "Woodstock" or Derek Trucks review . . . fun stuff. I love riding all night.

You can "win" the event. Last time I didn't try, it was about having fun and enjoying watching the sunrise while riding on a freezing February morning. Good times. : )

Here is the ride report I did on it

we have the isle of vashon here that is similar in that it is not a 'race' . it is put on by the local vintage motorcycle association.
The tiddler run is restricted to bikes over 25 years old, and 250ccs and under.
they cordon off the whole island. great time. I would love to run it on a whizzer

it is during day light though.

The first and only time I participated, I didn't even TRY to hit the checkpoints... I just wanted to follow the route. That was the COLDEST weather in which I'd ever ridden (the thermostat on the K1200LT read "9"). My friend and I got hopelessly lost due to a typo in the route sheet (a correction was given during the sign up, but we never heard the announcement).

After wandering aimlessly trying to get back on route, we saw a sign for the Hutchinson River Parkway. By mutual agreement, we said "F*** It!" and headed back for home (and warmth). Haven't tried it since, though I've been tempted a couple of times. I really should've done it in 2009... I doubt the conditions would EVER be better than they were that night.
