My feedback to craigslist...

I've tried twice, been "published" twice for my home for rent ad. Current ad URL follows:

[redacted]

I deleted the previous ad from 12/11/2010 this morning after again verifying that it had never showed up in the listings. It was [redacted]

There is NOTHING in the help forums or FAQs that have been of any use to me in resolving the ghosting issues. This has been a terrible waste of my time and has been EXTREMELY frustrating.

There needs to be MUCH better documentation to help honest people successfully post ads. There is no guidance whatsoever concerning what may or may not be a problem when posting an ad, it is deceitfully accepted and termed "published", but then NEVER shows up in the listings. Seriously people, do you have ANY idea of how incredibly exasperating that is. You are basically lying to your would-be customers. THAT IS WRONG!!!

I've been trying to rent my home in Grand Prairie, TX via an ad on the dallas craigslist since 12/11/2010. This has my first experience with your service. It is likely to be my last. HORRIBLE!

Fix it or kill it! You are deceiving and wasting way too much time of way too many good honest people. It is outrageous. Whoever is responsible should be ashamed.

I've been hearing about craigslist for years now. Never used it until a few weeks ago. What a waste of time. I've never seen such a poorly documented, designed, and administered web site before. It is horrible.

When you look at their "help desk" forum you find it chock full of folks who are unable to get their ads to actually show up, this despite the fact that craigslist informs them that their ads are "published."

Craigslist is a liar.

You get what you pay for.

I have used it and it is very clumsy but the price is right.

I think part of the appeal is the 1990 internet BBS look and feel of it.

Clumsy or just basic/simple is one thing. Deceitful and useless is another.

What exactly is the problem? I have sold cars, motorcycles, computer equipment, musical instruments and rented out a condo on craigslist with no problems over the past 10 years.

I can help you out if you want - just pm me the details and which cities you need it published under.

I have one response after two queries on the help forum there.
Blake.. some thoughts about your ad.. <-> 12/21 13:22:44

...and what may help it get past the filter system.

Letters and numbers only in the title field.
NO punctuation marks. NO symbols. None. Nada.
(same in the location field for good measure)

Minimize comma use.
List
in a
column style
The, system, may, see, too, many, commas, as,
a, list, of, prohibited, keywords.

You might consider the same thing with the semi-colons you're using in the description.

Just remember, the longer the ad and teh more unnecessary punctuation used,,
the more stuff could bet caught in the filter system.
Keep It Simple and Stupid is good.. ;}

If you are composing in Word or the like
and pasting .doc text
or
copying text from a website and pasting to craigslist,
don't do that. Compose in a plain text editor like Notepad or
TextEdit save it to your hard drive as plain (not RTF)
and then copy and paste.

Generally edited ads don't escape from the filters once "stuck"..
post an entirely new ad.
do not edit this "stuck" ad.
start from scratch.
wait 48+ hours from time of original posting
to post your entirely new from scratch ad.
or...
re-word the new one (title & body) so as not to be similar
to the original and try posting it now.
(make sure you delete this "stuck" ad)

Nothing anywhere on the site advises about any of the above. And I've seen too many ads that include symbols in the title for that to be the issue.

I have to wait two days? Good grief.

My ad text...

Title: Exceptionally Nice 3-2-2 Brick Home Near I-20 & 360

A must see! This is a beautiful 3-bedroom, 2-bath brick home with a full 2-car garage plus work area. Appointments and finishes include: All new plush carpeting & padding in living room, all bedrooms & hall; new travertine stone flooring & base trim in both baths; ceramic tile in kitchen, dining, & entry; mini-blinds in all windows; ceiling fans in all rooms; fine oak cabinetry throughout; brick fireplace with raised hearth; full-height bay window in dining area; abundant storage throughout including garage shelving, desk/workbench, attic & a back-yard shed; large master bedroom featuring two full-sized closets; walk-in closet in the west/front bedroom.

In addition to the home's very nice interior appointments, you'll also enjoy a beautiful private back yard graced by beautiful trees & landscaping surrounding the entire home. You'll enjoy relaxing alone or with friends/family at the picnic table on the back patio while appreciating the wary company of squirrels, songbirds, doves, and the occasional gecko. Yard upkeep is made easy with the automatic sprinkler system.

The home is located in Grand Prairie near I-20 & 360 at **** Ozark Drive, Grand Prairie, TX 75052. Ozark is off of Arkansas Lane between SH161 and Great Southwest Pkwy. This home is a must see! It is like new and is in a great neighborhood with wonderful neighbors. Plus the landlord is wonderful too. : ) Rent is an incredible bargain at just $1050/mo. We're looking for exceptional tenants, not quick money. Application and credit check required. Security deposit is $1050.

The yard has been over-seeded with perennial rye for nice golf course-like Winter lawn. Some photos of exterior are from earlier this past Summer before exterior painting and hedge trimming. Others are from just a month ago. My phone camera has no flash, so I don't have photos of the other rooms where lighting was not up to photo-taking levels. One wall of the living room is paneled in the same light oak finish as the kitchen cabinetry. There are cabinets in the master bath, hall bath, washroom, and there are two full height cabinets in the hallway are all the same nice oak finish as those in kitchen. The painted walls have a knocked-down plaster texture. The ceilings all have a rough texture, sound-absorbing treatment. All windows are double pane.

Thank you for your interest.

Give us a call at ***-***-**** or send an email to schedule a visit.

I removed street number and telephone number from above.

Well, I'm not sure about the source of your troubles Blake...

My experience with CL has been quite the opposite. I have posted literally hundreds of ads for drivers, and I can usually count on the lobby being filled with applicants within just a couple of hours. No joke, I place the ad at 9:15am and there are about 20 people in our lobby by 11:00am.

Other than the overall length of your ad text, I see no reason why CL would not publish it or get it stuck in a filter. I use symbols and stuff in the titles all the time.

You know what I blame this on the breakdown of?

Society.

You pay for your employment ads though, yes?

I'd happily pay for my home for rent ad if it would post.

Stupid idealists. Yet another example proving how essential it is to have a profit motive. The for-profit portion of craigslist works great. The free part, horrible.

So, after getting the email after initially posting the the ad, you went to link in email and clicked Publish right? I had the same problem a couple years ago when trying to sell stuff, and found out later why.

Just a thought. It happened to me that way, so figured I'd mention it lol

I think the email took me to a craigslist page where I then clicked on "publish". I then received a confirmation email stating that my ad had indeed been "published" and providing a direct link to it. That made me think that it was listed. What else would one think? I later found that it wasn't.

I have also used Craigslist for numerous items with great results both selling and buying. I did have one item (a Nintendo Wii) never show up which albeit was frustrating, the bottom line was it is a FREE service that is viewed by lots of people which is very hard to come by this day and age. The other solution is to print a flier and post it at your local supermarket!!

Sorry to hear you are having troubles. I have had quite a bit of success with the free part. It is how I paid for all the maintenance items for the Buell last year, Including the money for HC2010. It sounds like you have done everything right.
When I get the published email and link it still takes a while before the ad actually is posted on CL. You may try posting it again then searching for it the next day. Not much help here.

Like what the recommendation said above, too many hyphens, numbers, abbreviations in the title. Should read:

"House for rent"

Any other detail can be done in the body of the text. Craigslist is great, you just have to watch out for scammers.

Yes, in California we pay for our employment ads. In Las Vegas they're free.

I've sold a few motorcycles and cars through the free part of CL with no issues though.

I had that happen to me a few days ago... I got around it by posting "Madison" so it actually went up on the Madison page... then I could edit it to Waunakee, Springfield Corners, or whatever... I thought it was just me, but, it did generate a spammer... the add specifically says to call the landlady's number or to e-mail her at her address... I think there are a lot of spammers on craigslist...

>>> Ask for a refund

Lack of fee excuses neither deceit, nor egregiously poor management, nor incompetence, nor the significant time wasted.

I've used Craigslist to buy and sell multiple items. No problems as of yet.

Blake, once you "publish" your ad, go into craigslist and do a search for what you want to sell. Sometimes it helps if you are not logged in for some reason. Also it takes an hour or so to actually get you item up on the site from when you press the "publish" button.

If you need a hand send me a pm. The only problem I've had with Craigslist is folks bailing out on me. Buyer/Seller beware is all I can say about using Craigslist, it is free after all.

Craigslist has worked wonderfully for me, both buying and selling. A few spammers have answered my ads, but the delete button works well.

I sold both Moto Guzzis and the XB9S on CL, as well as other stuff.

No home invasions either. It has happened to some. That would make for another topic.

I have sold and bought quite a bit from CL and make a nice second living selling stuff from CL on EBay, I saw a show about the owner and thought it was cool he refused to sell ad space or the company to major corporations like Time Warner who wanted to buy and profit off of the ads, the show said he only makes enough money to pay his staff and make a fair salary. His reason for the low-tech look was so anyone even those on slow PC's could surf quickly and easily (have you seen how long EBay ads take to load now)...

It's not right that they, as the most valuable repository of Internet classified ads, should be able to squelch an individual like they've done. Although it is their site, and I guess they should be able to run it however they want to run it. And if people don't like how Craigslist runs their site, people can go to other sites...
