>>> Does anyone honestly think that he had any type of moral "deviancy" on his mind when this picture was taken? No. But that is not the "shocker" either. |

OK! Enough already! No I didn't get it exactly right... So what. Call it the rock n' roll variation. No, I didn't mean anything perverted. Where do you think I saw 'the shocker' for the first time?....BadWeb! To tell you the truth, I was thinking of BadWeb when I threw it. Nobody there that day, or since, has said anything about it or even noticed. And as far as being 'in uniform and throwing the shocker'... get over it. We're people too, just like you. Yes, we're held to a higher standard of discipline, moral behavior, blah blah blah. But we are just like everyone else. And it wasn't a public forum or magazine cover photo, it was a 'goof off' photo that the Commander wanted. I knew my audience, as I always do. Anyone who has ever been in uniform understands what I'm talking about. Besides, it was the other goof photo (that I can't even be seen in)that got printed and hung up in the Squadron on Friday. Even if it had been that photo, my hand would be 1/16" long. |

>>> And it wasn't a public forum It is now. Thus my original commentary...
That's a gesture to be proud of? Really? In connection with the armed forces of your country? Worthy of announcing to the world via Internet? On an expressly (see our Terms of Use/Rules) family-oriented forum? I know, most likely no serious offense intended, but come on, can we please try to elevate our behavior above that of street gangs, punks, and juveniles? If we wouldn't act it out among young children, or before mom or grandma, then should we do so in public? Is this really the type of message that our popular culture has come to glorify? "That's a gesture to be proud of?" Erik doesn't seem to mind it. "In connection with the armed forces of your country?" Sorry, just because I'm wearing a uniform, that doesn't make it the official stance of the U.S. Armed Forces. "Worthy of announcing to the world via Internet?" Announcing what?... "On an expressly (see our Terms of Use/Rules) family-oriented forum?" Expressly family oriented? That's a lame rule to use in this case. (See item one above) "I know, most likely no serious offense intended, but come on, can we please try to elevate our behavior above that of street gangs, punks, and juveniles?" Don't even think about relating me to a street gang, punk, or juvenile. That's all I'm gonna say about that. "If we wouldn't act it out among young children, or before mom or grandma, then should we do so in public?" Once again, I first saw 'the shocker' here on BadWeb. Too late for that rule. "Is this really the type of message that our popular culture has come to glorify?"Unfortunately, yes. But this forum is not 'popular culture'. If it was, I wouldn't be on here and I wouldn't ride a Buell.

What did Eleanor Roosevelt think of the Marines.... “The Marines I have seen around the world have the cleanest bodies, the filthiest minds, the highest morale, and the lowest morals of any group of animals I have ever seen. Thank God for the United States Marine Corps!” pretty much the truth for everyone I knew while I was in.... |

>>> Erik doesn't seem to mind it. You dodged the question. If you are using that as an excuse, I already pointed out that the gesture Erik was photographed displaying is not the "shocker". It is likely the three-percenter sign, which would make a LOT more sense. Regardless, that you made the sign is less disappointing that advertising that you did so on a public forum. |

Not the shocker? Potato/patatoe So my flying thumb makes it a WHOLE different thing. "That's a gesture to be proud of?" Sure! I'm proud that I have the freedom to do something silly when somebody says I should. Are you proud that you immediately turned my screwball post into a PTA meeting. I just thought a few people might get a little giggle out of it and go on with their day. If you don't care about somebody's post, just don't read it anymore. Don't #%^*^ all over it. I didn't direct a threat or gesture to anyone on here, or anybody in the world for that matter, so there was no need for a moderator to kill the mood. +1 on Mrs. Roosevelt's quote. It's true of most service members. Thanks Wolf. |

dang I was shocked (pun intended) when I saw this thread at the top of the list again. and three pages! sorry I didn't read them all but wanted to at least drop some support, I laughed and kept on rollin' "as you was" (long story from when I was still in uniform) oh and also for fun reference, while learning ASL I 'spotted the shocker' and was a little surprised at first based on the context of the conversation (and the fact that it was two girls throwing the shocker at each other) but it turns out in this area it is the deaf "whatever" (Message edited by delta_one on December 13, 2010) |

It was my understanding that the shocker/3 fingers = 3% mine to. I thought it the unofficial Buell guys salute. either way, I've seen pics of friends in uniform along the same lines throwing up the bird. Making funny faces ect. BTW Tbolt, thank you for your service!! |

Whatever? Really? Ya think maybe he was just saying "Hi" to Char? And Tbolt - when I said maybe it wasn't the best idea to throw it in uniform, that really wasn't a condemnation. Just didn't want to see it somehow come back and bite you. Seen folks get chewed out ( or more) for a lot less (Message edited by midnightrider on December 13, 2010) |

LOL I hadn't though of that but yes it really does mean that, among other things of similar nature based on context ("whatever", "I don't want to hear it", "yea right", talk to the hand" ect). but be advised it may not mean that in your neck of the woods, for example there are over 36 sings for birthday depending on where you are in the country. I just thought some of you may like the fun fact but if he wasn't saying hi I bet Chuck was or he too is a 3%er (Message edited by delta_one on December 13, 2010) |

>>> Perhaps the holier-than-thou have got something to hide? Imagine that, another personal attack from Midnightrider. What a swell person. Well-intentioned perspective shares little in common with self-righteous, aka holier-than-thou, condemnation, which is exactly your style, not mine. TBolt, I was hoping you'd accept friendly criticism in the spirit in which it was given, a friendly criticism. A man of honor acknowledges truth with class and grace. Other folks fill with indignation and denial. Which will shall we be? It seems that there are lots of folks looking to excuse poor behavior by pointing to other poor behavior. That's unfortunate. It would have been much easier for this custodian to just kill the thread. The discussion has been mostly good, what I was hoping for. I hope some of what I've said might eventually give pause. Merry Christmas. |

I know enough about Chuck Norris to know that he had no idea what the gesture signified when he posed for the photo above. I can probably get confirmation on that if you like. |

My dear Blake Do you really think that was a personal attack? How can it be a personal attack if no names were mentioned? There were several people who criticized the original poster. And several who expressed support in one way or another. How would we ever survive without your divine guidance and moral direction..... you petty, self-righteous Neanderthal tool? Now that's a personal attack! . |

I've seen the types of pics of folks displaying the gesture, which is why I was so bewildered to learn the meaning. Pretty sure I'm not alone. No one in my family knew what it meant. |
