I managed to throw down the shocker during our Squadron photo on Wednesday. The commander wanted a couple of 'goofy' shots of the unit so we obliged. (Faces of the innocent have been disguised)
I didn't know what a "shocker" hand gesture signifies. I'm thinking a lot of folks don't. I'd seen it plenty; figured it was just some kind of good-natured salute akin to a peace sign. I just looked it up via google.
In connection with the armed forces of your country?
Worthy of announcing to the world via Internet?
On an expressly (see our Terms of Use/Rules) family-oriented forum?
I know, most likely no serious offense intented, but come on, can we please try to elevate our behavior above that of street gangs, punks, and juveniles?
If we wouldn't act it out among young children, or before mom or grandma, then should we do so in public?
Is this really the type of message that our popular culture has come to glorify?
Geforce, I'm honestly interested, why do you so admire Dave's behavior? I can see the fun in gigging authority, the commander. We used to just make a funny face or put up two fingers behind the head of one standing next to or in front of us.
Shame on both of you. Now go stand in the corner until dinnertime.
PS: I hesitate to relay this, but it adds some humor to my preaching; according to wikipedia, that is not an accurate display of the "shocker" gesture.
Imagine the outrage from the anti-Christian hordes if a state school/university adopted an image of Jesus or an angel as their mascot.
Apparently the ACLU endorses Satan and the devil. Their hypocrisy is incredible; their agenda impossible to ignore.
I used to think this kind of stuff didn't matter. Heck, I was firmly caught up in it. I don't see it that way anymore, this mainly based on my own personal experience. The deep psychological influence of imagery upon young impressionable minds should not be dismissed.
"I'd seen it plenty; figured it was just some kind of good-natured salute akin to a peace sign. I just looked it up via google."
Wow, Blake- even though you're a moderator here on BW, you sure don't get out from under your rock much, eh? (I agree with Char there, have a laugh every now and then... )
Blake, I'm right there with you, I think it's disgusting. It's even worse when I see a little kid doing it because he wants to be "cool" like daddy. I present the future leaders of our country, we're all doomed.
Why does EVERYONE think I don't know what it means... I was not born yesterday... no worse than the PBR "mascot" that showed up at Homecoming... sheesh... if it is that bothersome... put it on the backfire board...
As Dave mentioned.... this was the goof off picture. I've taken lots of squad, platoon and company photos. The ones you see displayed in hallways, on fireplace mantels and corridors in military facilities are always professional.
The ones like Dave posted are just a silly, "everything goes" photo.
In reality, the shocker isn't at all that terrible of a gesture in comparison to some of the other "goofy poses" I've witnessed in pictures. There is even one I have in an album with a blow up doll, wig and some lipstick.
I would never disrespect this country or my comrades in official capacity... but when the commander says... "Alright men, get your @#!$ face on for the next one!" We, like Dave... get silly.
I'm just curious as to why some folks, nice friendly folks, feel it is worthy entertainment. I can appreciate the humor in a good mooning; I don't see it in the shocker. Might partly be due to misinterpreting it all these years and being so surprised upon learning the true meaning. I was going to say "shocked", but well
Char, I tend to agree with the "earned it" observation, but still wonder "why do it."
I think the increase in popularity of joking displays of the "shocker" and the like speaks to the health of our society, and it isn't a very positive prognosis.
Blake I don't know if I can provide a good answer for the question you have. I can tell you that in my experience in the combat arms profession I have shared some of the most awful and most wonderful of experiences of my life. Some of the best stories I have ever told, or ever heard have been sitting around amongst peers. I'm not keen on gang signs, but to me, the shocker has always been a legend amongst the trashiest of stories circulating amongst the barracks. So when I see Dave and the shocker (Which, is kind of hard to really see it to begin with...) the first thought that comes to mind is... good for you Dave. Have fun.
I guess seeing Dave having a good time just caused me to give him the thumbs up knowing that life isn't also so shiny and satirical in the military. I'm often sighted flashing the "Rock On" to aircraft in CAS. In Hawaii most of the locals wave with the "Hang Loose Bro" wave.
Here's a guy who shares a little goofiness along with some good motorcycling tips for beginners. The following video will explain the differences in biker waves.
That being said. I'm not offended. If a young'in is on the site, takes the time to look up what the "shocker" is, odds are they have seen and heard much worse. I've heard and seen butt/sexual jokes on and alluded to on the quick board before.
I do not think society is a risk because a guy in the military decided to put this up on a mostly male dominated forum dedicated to motorcycles. Guys, bikes, guns, the "shocker", while may not "go" together are often found close by.
I however, have no plans on ever deploying the Shocker. Not part of my ars'enal.
i think i'm the youngest (or pretty darn close) and i'm not offended...
while up in homecoming i was pulling out of AV with my friend kyle on his yellow X1 and somebody was coming in, they flashed the shoccker to me, it made me laugh. I was seeing it all over badweb, and when i got up to HC and actually met some of you guys, it just made me laugh and feel more connected to the buell family, if it wasnt for badweb i'd be like WTF?...did that guy just throw up the shocker to me?!
