This month is the month of Movember. What is Movember you ask? It is a time to raise awareness for men's health issues especially prostate cancer. This is done by gowing the best moustache 'Mo' that you can during the month of Movember, starting on November 1st completely shaved. I could scare you with a page of statistics, but everyone at some point in their life will be effected by it. Which is a shame because it is nearly 100% curable if caught in time. This spring I had to experience the pain anxiety of watching my father get wheeled into surgery to have his removed. He has recovered fully and is back to riding his Harley and beggin to ride my Firebolt. PSA, PSA, PSA. If you don't have a family history they suggest PSA test at 50. With a history sooner, it's easier than the "DRE". I had a scare last year and PSA indicated that further investigation was warrented. Ultrasound biopsy showed everything to be clear. A year of Avodart has cut my PSA in half. BTW my DAD (RIP) was in the original PSA test group when they were developing the test. It probably saved his life (or at least extended it many years). Yep a little awareness goes a long way. My dad was a survivor. Ended up getting killed by a flu shot. Go figure. I'm 38 and get checked yearly at my own expense. | ||

PSA used to be at 35 as a check, its still a wise idea. the same guys that said wait til 50 are the govt goons that are saying dont get mammos or pap smears for women every year. who you gonna trust with your health, the government ? let me know how that works out for ya. | ||

Had a cancer scare myself earlier last July. Yearly examine discovered an elevated PSA level and an "irregular" shape on my prostate. Doctor didn't jerk around with it at all. Less than 2 days after the exam I was in a urologist office. Best choice for me turned out to be a biopsy. Not the least bit pleasant but the news was good and the peace of mind was worth all the trouble. Don’t get this one wrong. Get it a PSA check. There was also a great side benefit from all this. Despite my ex wife’s belief, my urologist has assured me he did not find my head up there. | ||

I'll be 31 in January so I still have a few years before I start getting the two down low, but you can bet I will be getting checked. It's also a good idea to do a self exam of the ole berries (as in twig and berries). Testicular cancer is another cancer that is easily cured if caught early enough. | ||

Thanks for the reminder, I was supposed to get blood drawn this week for it. I'll have to stop in on Monday. Hit 50 last March. | ||
