My ass they didn't know they needed a permit, they were conducting business on a government owned public park. Their greed got the best of them.

Good god.. it isn't like they caned them or anything. they just told them they couldn't sell on city property without a permit. They even said if i was for charity they wouldn't have had a problem. They are lucky the I.R.S. has caught wind of their venture. Most cities you have to have a vendor permit to sell anything on any other than your own property. A lot of cities require a permit for a yard or garage sale on your property

One saturday morning when I was maybe 9 years old...

My friend and I got this great idea.

Sell pomegranates. Fresh off the bush. Right there in front of the house, people drive by, we've got a little table set up, five for a dollar.

We cleaned them up and tied them into nice clear plastic bags. Pull up to the curb, we come to you, a buck gets you five nice pomegranates.

Thing is, it wasn't my house and it wasn't my friend's house... they weren't our pomegranates and it wasn't our bush. The table we appropriated from a neighbor's side yard and the plastic bags we swiped from a newspaper stand.

We made about $15 before the homeowner pulled into the driveway.

The ensuing chase was priceless. The next hours were a sugar-fueled shopping frenzy that other 9 year olds would call legendary for years to come.

Tom. I think you make a good point. The clip has another person saying maybe the kid could be given a discount on his permit since they are several hundred dollars.

I wondered why they didn't move to a private location, but if given a cease and desist order they were probably shut down for good.

Or perhaps it's all just a bunch of noise about how the man is keeping the kid down.

For profit vs non profit, does it matter? When I was a kid my parents struggled to make the rent, if I wanted money I needed to figure out a way to make a buck. Making him buy a permit, even at a discounted rate, would make an excellent economic lesson to go with how to make a dollar.
