I remember the day that it happened. I still get the chills every time I hear that song. God rest their souls.

Sorry Jaimec, I have been a Gordon Lightfoot fan all my life, I was kind of forced to, my late father was a huge fan. That version of Gordon is hard to watch.
I have always loved Gordon's storytelling songs!

This is the version I like...

Spank,

It was the first one I found on YouTube actually featuring him singing.

I know, I know. It's just the last time I saw him it was kind of a let down, and that reminded me of it. I didn't mean any offense...

I understand in later performances he made a subtle change to the lyrics when it was determined that crew error had nothing to do with the wreck, and it was all due to the horrendous weather, wind and waves.

Yes, I guess that he doesn't want to change the copyrighted version though.

These lakes get rough, I have been out on Lake Michigan and you could swear that you were on a ocean. Now put an early winter storm in there and you will have a serious problem. I think it's crazy that the Great Lakes have over 6000 shipwrecks!

One article I read on the wreck said that many captains, with YEARS of experience piloting the North Atlantic, quit after one storm on the Great Lakes.

There are quite a few wrecks easily accessible without diving too deep here on the Wisconsin side of Lake Michigan...or at least so I've been told. The story of the Edmund Fitzgerald has always intrigued
me. Maybe it was the song, maybe it was all the ship wreck stories from the Lakes and how close I am to them...I just don't know.

Growing up in Michigan in the 80's, the Edmund Fitzgerald was legendary. Here's a good article with some interesting links.

Kewl. When me, Etennuly, Ratbuell and wifey, and Ken (dammit cant keep names/aliases right) convoyed over the Mackinac bridge en route to HC this year, that was my first time being around any of the Great Lakes- we had plenty of time in the saddle to contemplate the vastness of this area...

One day I'd love to go back and spend some time there. I did pick up a local magazine and scan some articles that were about the lakes and their history, including the aspect of travel and potential shipwrecks on them. Fascinating...

My biggest regret was not taking the time to stop, investigate, and try a locally made "pastie" when in the U P...

My parents are from the Copper Country (Keeweenaw Peninsula) of the U.P. I spent many a Summer vacation up there and swimming in Lake Superior. I still get a chill whenever I hear this song.

I was born in Marquette, but moved to the LP when I was two. The bulk of my dads side of the family still live there and we vacationed up there every summer. When we'd go to the beach on lake Superior, we'd collect iron ore pellets that had spilled out of the ships. (the public swimming areas in Marquette are near the ore ship loading docks)

86129, bad job by you missing the pasties. The best you'll have in the UP is from Jean Kays in Marquette. I could live on those things. My aunt recently bought a shop in Appleton, WI, but I haven't been over there to try them yet.

Here's a link to Jean Kays in Marquette, where you can order pasties online.
