To put a chicken to sleep, tuck it's head under it's wing and swing it upright in a vertical circle about ten times. Set it where ever you want and it will stay there with it's head under it's wing for a LONG time. Looks funny, balanced on a fence post with no head showing............

I have killed and plucked chickens. Killing is not bad. Plucking is just NASTY. Dip the bird in boiling water and pull feathers. I am fortunate enough to live in a rural area which has a local slaughterhouse/butcher. For about $1.75 each, you can bring your chickens to him, live and kicking, and you'll get them back ready to eat. Seems like a no brainer to me.

I prefer cleaning and gutting fish myself. That, I can do no problem.

The "green..." chick story is awesome! I'm instituting that one immediately. Previously when I get a egg eater in the flock it was processed immediately.

I keep 10 to 20 laying hens...fresh eggs everyday. Barred Rock is my favorite for meat birds. Their smallish odd colored eggs are great novelty items too.

Grab the neck and swiftly snap the entire bird (takes some practice) and the bird is very dead.

If you're going to pluck more than one, heck if you're going to pluck any, then I have the best advice you'll get in this thread right here 'Rubber Fingered Chicken Plucker.' Just do it : )

Worked on a duck farm when I was younger-processing about 250 ducks/day wasn't much fun.
We used to hang the chickens by the feet from the swingset-Rocky training is a bit easier when they're in a coup. Slit the throat-stand back.
Deer, hog, chickens, ducks, and fish all taste much better when they were running/swimming around less than 4 hours prior.
I always thought thought the craziest thing about farming with animals was what they used O-rings for.
Cool tip on the yard bird-I've tried it with ducks though and it didn't work so well...
