One of the best things about living in this are is the annual airshow. My 3 y/o son keeps his ears and eyes towards the sky and tips me on anything flying overhead. These are some shots from the past week. The shots are taken with a Cannon SX100IS. It's great for close shots but leaves a lot to be desired at distance, especially when magnified with digital zoom.

This is an ATAC Israeli Kfir at a great distance. They can be seen swooping around near the base once or twice a year but they're usually too fast to catch on camera when they're close. They're extremely loud compared to most any other jet that's seen in these skies.

Flock of turkey vultures. This was just the highest concentration. They covered the sky.

The moon one morning. The sun and moon were out at the same time.

A10 over the house heading to the show.

Haven't seen one of these in person before.

The F-16 was hard to catch as the pilot was haulin' throughout the routine.

My favorite shot

Raining skydivers

My boy putting on his own show

Interestingly, the cheaply made yet overpriced Chinese toy plane set he got included a couple F-16XL's

Blue Angel #2 happens to be a local

My son pointed out the Blue Angels on their way home flying over the house.

Soon after the Super Hornet flies over

Closer shot of one of the many turkey vultures that can be seen at nearly anytime. They are very graceful fliers.

I do love me some airshows. I live near where Doolittle's Raiders did some kind of training or something for the famous attack and there is a real interesting airshow here that commemorates it. B17's and B24's along with an exhibition by a couple of military branches. Many aerobatic planes and exhibitions as well.

Sorry, I can't post pics. (or the sound of a B17)

Been into aircraft and flying since I was a kid. Thanks for posting!

Sweet post!
P.S. Your camera kicks azz (I use a cell phone, so.....)! Some of those pics are incredible.

Nice, If I ever win a big lottery, I want a Corsair for one of my toys.

An A10 would be nice too, just for intimidating the neighbours y'unnnerstan.

Oh & a C130 to put the RV & bikes in when it's vacation time.

Great pics. I love seeing three of my favorite planes in one picture ... the P51, the Warthog and the Phantom.

Sorry, the heavies are like flies around here. Only the little one gets excited about seeing those.

The A10 is so graceful, yet so bad-@ss. While in the USMC we played the opposing force at the Army National Training Center in Southern Cali. I was shocked at how quiet those A10 were, and how ridiculously low they flew over rugged terrain.

My favs at the show were the Corsair, A10, and Super Hornet. Last years show at the beach had the Red Bull Helo which put on an unbelievable show. The wife's camera was broken at the time.

The Phantom is cool. It's a curious looking plane; the wings showing all the compromises of its design.

It's been a long time since I've seen a Harrier at a show, and there's never much helo love.

I caught a better moon shot the other day.

These are clouds from just hours earlier.

You know, when you're pinned down at the base of some mountain in Afghanistan, their is no feeling like the one you get when the A-10 you called comes in to save your ass.

I am proud that I worked on the A-10 in my first engineering job when I was fresh out of UCSD. At that time, it was considered a bastard child and all the pilots wanted to fly the F-18. It was in danger of cancellation until the realization hit home that an airborne 50mm machine gun can be your best friend. It is so badass that the barrel would start deforming if deployed for more than a couple of seconds of sustained fire.

Awesome! We used to watch the annual show at McDill when we lived in Tampa. Loved all but the sunburn that inevitably would happen spending all day in the sun looking up.

They always seemed to have an F-15 that would sneak in from the back side of the crowd to do a low-slow to full A-B vertical scaring the crap out of the thousands of spectators. Awesome thing seeing them all duck to the tarmac at the same time!

Nothing prettier than a Corsair flying around though.

One cool thing about living near Tampa was the variety of air vehicles that would fly over the neighborhood. We could watch the Space Shuttle launch and return, one day I stepped out into my yard to watch the Concorde fly over, as well as the then new B-2 as it was flying in to be debuted for the first time in public. And pairs of F-16s and C130s everywhere.

A-10.....the 'XB12X Ulysses' of airplanes!

I wish they would send some A10's down to patrol the border... That would get their attention. Nothing says Welcome better than some depleted uranium slugs.

One correction Reindog...the Avenger is a 30mm cannon.

I've been mock attacked by Harriers and Super Cobras. Ya sure feel pretty small and helpless having a Harrier swoop directly over or a Cobra turn on your position.

I'd really like to see a B2 flight in person. When in Western NY two B1's flew low and fast directly over the house. It was a magnificent sight.

F-15's are probably the loudest jets I've encountered.

I've seen the space shuttle rocket burn from this area. That is a spectacular sight that must be truly awesome close up.

My dad would take the family to the Oshkosh airshow in WI when we lived in IL. Those were the best I've seen.
