I had ordered a Nazi documentary a few months back on how Hitler and the SS came to power which prompted me to pick up Auschwitz. I've never had a book enrage me so much in my life.

I was curious what else is out there that people would recommend?

Night
by Elie Wiesel

Briefly - a shattering book.

quote:

Never shall I forget that night, that first night in the camp, which has turned my
life into one long night, seven times cursed and seven times sealed. Never shall I
forget that smoke. Never shall I forget the faces of the children, whose bodies I
saw turned into wreaths of smoke beneath a silent blue sky.

Never shall I forget those flames which consumed my faith forever.

Never shall I forget that nocturnal silence which deprived me, for all eternity, of
the desire to live. Never shall I forget those moments which murdered my God
and my soul and turned my dreams to dust. Never shall I forget those things, even
if I am condemned to live as long as God Himself. Never.

Osip Mandelstam
Anna Akhmatova
Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn

Nicholas Riasanovskiy has a pretty good history of it.

Be careful. If you ever decide to run for office, someone might take your interest in the holocaust to mean that you are a closet Nazi.

To best understand evil, you must confront it, study its tactics, and watch for its creaping encroachment.

or you could ignore it and claim it never happened. .....

I was on the same kick after I was in a play called I Never Saw Another Butterfly

check out the book (a collection of stories poems and art from children of Theresienstadt) and the play is a fictional one act set in Terezin (Theresienstadt)

the city was Terezin but the Nazis called it Theresienstadt, it was a ghetto more than a concentration camp if I remember correctly but it was a bad place none the less. (yes understatement to say the least)

it was a strange propaganda camp that was supposed to paint a very different picture of the Nazi control. But it was also a gateway to Auschwitz.

Just as a juxtaposition to Nazi atrocities read something on the Bengal famine of 1942-43. Not as preconceived, planned or as systematic as the exterminations by the nazi's but just as devastating if you happened to be there at the time.

Triumph of The Will.... its a propaganda film that Adolph helped produce.
I had to watch it again after our current presidents inauguration, pretty similar.

Also look at what the Japanese did in World War II. I am quite sure they were far worse than the Nazi's funny how little is made about it. I always wondered if it was because they were mostly Chinese victims. I also agree you should study what the Soviets did to the undesirables as well. Don't flame me guys undesirables was a broad stroke ,Gypsy's retards, gays,Jewish and anyone not considered a worthy human.

Branding as Nazi would depend on the rest of the library besides the open question that was asked here. It's not hard to recognize.

To compare Japanese and German people study John Dower's War Without Mercy and Japan in War and Peace.

Both were horrible (all the combatant nations could be accused of that) but post-war, we talk of "good Germans", we do not talk of "good Japanese".

No, Brumbear, little is not made of it. America looks more at Germany, the Commonwealth, and Asia, remembers Japan very well.

I read a book back in high school that has haunted me ever since.

Babi Yar: A Document in the Form of a Novel; New, Complete, Uncensored Version

It was originally published in 1970

I've read many others since but this one had the most impact.

Good point Archangel good point The CW was much more involved in the pacific theatre especially China/ Burma than most of us in the states realize,IMO thanks for the reminder.I don't quite get what you mean on the Nazi thing I thought that's what the original poster was commenting on. The Nazi's were some pretty bad boys as well.

AAHHH I think I get it now I reread it a couple times. I am referring to the numbers of dead due to war crimes only hear. I should have been more clear as well as the Soviets and well all involved actually.

or you get some of the people like the lady that had ran for school superintendent where i grew up, she had a firm belief that the Holocaust never happened an was ready to remove it from the school districts curriculum, and trying to make people like my grandfather look like liars with the things that he had seen and dealt with during WWII

Buellerandy,
If you want to read "the Rise And Fall Of The Third Reich" A History Of Nazi Germany by: William L. Shirer, I will mail you my copy. It is about 1600 pages in paperback. A very good read though.

Another book that will hold your attention is: The Good Old Days: The Holocaust as Seen by It's Perpetrators and Bystanders
by Ernst Klee, Willi Dressen. I have it in my library somewhere but I'm not finding it right now. Here is a link to it on Amazon:

my memories fade ..... but

There was a movie, about the jews who worked at Auschwitz as a member of the "sonder-kommando unit . What they did and how they reconciled it. David Arquette(courtney cox's new ex) was in it.

It is called "The Grey Zone".

I've included a link to it's review at Amazon, it's a very chilling tale.

There is a book called "Man's Search For Meaning" by Viktor Frankl who was a prisoner in both Theresienstadt and Auschwitz. The book describes the life of a prisoner in a concentration camp from the perspective of a Psychiatrist. Well worth reading.
