HD made a real MX bike for one year in 1978. The bike was a very good effort for a first year entry. I raced one that year and it was very fast but a bit heavy. Nothing that could not have been refined. It even made it to the podium for a MX national. Unfortunately, HD dropped the program. One more area where HD could have been competitive and then dropped the ball.

Desert Sleds - remember those? Before the Japanese got interested in dirt bikes, all the off-road events were populated with converted Nortons, Trumpets, and Sportys. Put some knobbies on, strip it, jack the suspension up as far as you can, add a bigger wheel sprocket, and off you go. Lots cheaper than the $8K you spend for dirt bikes these days. (You get a lot more bike for $8K, but now I worry about breaking it - the older ones, you expected to break, so no biggie)

don't get me started on the Buell Dirt Bike. Harley Never could build even an worthy 'adv' bike from its current line up.
The CityX is too heavy for adventurous riding off the beating wagon track, and it is 150 lbs LIGHTER then the sporty.

needs to be in the sub 350 lb range, a single cylinder with umph, good tranny with low gears, the 78 was the closest they ever will get; I would still ride that bike today.

Neat bike with a powerband about 500 RPM wide . . . Henry Patterson used to have a couple new ones in crates and they kept some as spares that we used at their place when we needed extra bikes.

No.

They are safe and sound and have far more fabulous stories about them than you can possibly imagine.

stories are best told from out in the woods, around a fire, sat across from a tent and a circle of riding buddies.

still miffed that mothership management killed a bike. RIP Griffen.
