So a couple weeks ago i had the second occurrence of a mystery spark-skip episode with no engine codes. Wasn't all that warm and i was cruising 70+ but only for 10 minutes or so. after the first time i cleaned and retightened all the grounding points in accordance with advice from here and had no problems for a few months. then today I had gone less than 10 miles and stopped for a red light. idling there for about 30 seconds then ....my, its awfully quiet. engine died - no stumble just total silence; fan did not cycle on. figured i must have blown the main fuse and was looking for a place to push it out of traffic then decided to recycle the switch then hit the starter - zoom- away we go. got home and inspected everything for loose connections, chafing of the harness etc. nada.

this would be the third time for a sudden and complete loss of power but the first time from a standstill. literally months-years between the episodes. that of course doesn't count the broken throttle body that occurred as i was exiting the beltway about a year ago or the failed 77 connector that left me stranded after midnight last fall.

i bought this 06 Uly new and still love the bike but jeez - this is the kind of thing that gives me nightmares when i want to take it on the beltway at bumper to bumper over-the-speed-limit speeds or take a longer road trip.

Be willing to bet your BAS is acting up.

Really! That is a GREAT suggestion. Other than checking placement/position and connections - any way to troubleshoot that? Or is that the nature of gremlins - they are so hard to chase down because of the intermittent effects?

I'd replace it and relocate it if that has not been done(from in front of battery to behind seat latch). 08/up are already relocated,me believes heat is an issue.

Does your model have the kick stand safety switch?

A malfunction would create the scenario you described.

Chase the sensors that shut off the bike. Any fuel/spark issue would not usually be so easy to restart.

BAS (tip sensor) issue was vibration, not heat, related.

I wonder if a new BAS isn't another good thing to have on the shelf if you plan to keep your bike for a while? I will look at the wiring diagram to try to see if it can just be bypassed if it fails.

Is the BAS a common part? The BAS on our Street Triple looks exactly like the one on my Lightning. I haven't checked it the plugs are the same, but that would be an easy modification if need be.

If relocating it, make sure to keep the correct orientation. Mount it the wrong way and you will have new gremlins to figure out.

I had exactly the same problem with my Super TT, the problem was one of the relays.
There's 3 next to the fuses under the seat, they're all the same, one is for the starter one for the engine management & I can't remember the 3rd.
What you need to do to confirm, is to swap them around to see if the problem moves with the relay, I suggest marking them so you know which is which.
It's only about $12 for the part if memory serves.

The B.A.S. can be switched off via ECM Spy "pro mode."

I would not recommend disabling the B.A.S except for diagnostic purpose.

gives me some options. disabling the the BAS is not something I'd consider though. might just replace all the relays

Don't know how the relays are laid out on the Uly but there's a potential problem with the 9Rs.

Below the case, there's a real jumble of wires going through a tight bend. Look at the thick green one, it's part of the ignition circuit (forget what right now).

On mine, the insulator was worn thin. I noticed it looking for something else. I wrapped some electrical tape around it.

That would also give you a clean shut off.

As much as I hated to I went into the local H-D shop and asked for a replacement relay. To be fair, these guys (Old Glory of Laurel, MD) were pretty Buell-friendly in the past. Paid a whopping $5.25 for the relay and was on my way. I have yet to replace the relay but I did notice when I was checking the ones already installed that one was a little loose and one was about 25% out of the slots. Don't know how I missed it when I checked yesterday. On my way to Montgomery, Alabama in the morning so it'll be Saturday before I get to play again. Thanks again

Check the gray connector on the ECM, Any movement in the potting material as you push down and you have found your issue, In my case it would only do it when hot.
You can unplug the BAS and the bike will run but will throw a code.
I finally diagnosed my problem when i unplugged my BAS and it still ran like poo poo, surging and backfiring thu the pipe. Reconnected it and it ran fine.
A mile down the road i noticed the seat was loose stopped and reinstalled, bike runs as before, remove seat
and push(lightly) on the gray plug and the bike dies.
There is a tread on this site covering this although i found this on my own the hard way.
