my post 2 months ago

Trip to the mall and back. 10 miles one way. Trip up - uneventful. 10 minutes in the store, then back on the bike. 3 miles from home the engine stumbles a bit (70 mph) and the engine light is flashing. back off the throttle a bit - runs smooth, no flash. scenario repeats itself probably every 45 seconds. get off the highway, bike idles ok, nothing obvious. fan is running. last mile or two at 35 mph on side streets - flashing happens a couple more times. at the lower speeds i can hear a difference in the exhaust sound - it sounds - well - muffled. get off the bike-hook up ecm spy but the palm is dead. do the pin jumper thing - get 9 0r 10 very quick flashes, short break, 10 more quick flashes, repeats itself. palm is charged now - no trouble codes present. WTF?

after this i took advice and checked all grounds looked like it was fixed until tonight - did it again. again, second leg of a 20 mile trip. several hours between legs. felt the engine stumbling, looked down and saw a the engine light flashing. backed off on the throttle ( was doing 75-ish ) and it ran ok picked up the speed again - then another stumble. ran it 65ish for a few miles (traffic prohibited higher speeds) then couldn't get it to repeat. of course at that time i was near home and posted speeds dropped into the 40s.

advice?

only other thing i'm wondering about is i did a breather reroute years ago and my air vent on the reroute is only a few inches above the collection chamber and i've noticed the mini airfilter i have there (the vent) has oil residue evident. the collection chamber is an inline fuel filter i bored out ( holds maybe half an ounce) but i keep the bottom end capped or it blows spooge all over the chin spoiler. the mini airfilter is forward facing, just above the voltage regulator. is it possible at faster speeds I'm rammin enough air into what should be the outlet that its forcing air up the tube and impeding the blow by gases from venting. long shot but i'm wondering

Sounds like a temp sensor issue (possibly faulty sensor or maybe something actually causing a high temp) sending the ecm into skip-spark mode.

IIRC, that won't throw any trouble codes, it's a built in feature to prevent critical temperatures.

Somebody please correct me if I'm mistaken.

Just a shot in the dark here.. has anyone been into the wiring behind the dash lately?

A dealer swapped the wires to my check engine and low fuel lights once. Ten miles from the dealer the check engine light came on so I brought it straight back to them. They didn't find any trouble codes and said it would clear soon. I didn't get very far down the road before running out of fuel : )

BTW, that was on an X1. I haven't worked on my XB enough yet to even know if a similar mistake would be possible.

same thing happened to my 10 uly ,went to the dealer and changed the front tire, 80 mile ride home about 50 miles in it stats sputtering and check engine light goes on. let of the gas a bit and it went away for a few miles. still on the highway about 70 mph happens again , and again , and again.pull over and check the electrical connections , all tight, gas (half tank-check). back on the bike seems ok for about 10 more mins @ hwy speed, the back to bucking and check engine light going on and off sporatically. keeps getting worse so i get off the hwy and now its stalling and backfiring to. pull over again about 20 miles from home and start calling around to find a ride home to get a trailer.after sitting a half hour i started it up and it seemed fine so i hopped back on and made it home with some bucking and backfiring. Trailer the bike to the dealer and theres no codes, they go over it and can't find anything wrong. i drive back down and take it for a long test ride and get it to repeat in the same spot on the hwy ,u turn and back to the dealer , still no codes. finally they dyno'd it and got the problem to repeat and they think its the o2 sensor. waiting on the part to come in , so only time will tell. almost a month with no bike is really starting to suck.
