I have a Nikon D60 (my first digital camera). It takes ok pictures (at least good enough for me). I screwed up the lens by dropping it and I want to get another one just for general purpose pictures. I have no real requirements except to zoom. I was looking at the 55 - 200. Any help or comments would be appreciated. TIA Frank |

Frank not a bad choice but if your at like lets say a car show your going to be finding yourself backing up to get the pic. Sometimes a bummer if your doing this and lots of people walking around and your trying to snap a shot. |

I've got an 18-200 zoom Tamron on my Sony that just about covers every situation that I run into. |

18-200 That would work well all around |

I usually carry something that will go as wide as 28. That way like mentioned above, you don't have to stand in the next county if you want a picture of a car. Our short lens for the Canon is 28-135. It's a good all purpose lens. We have a long lens as well, for ...well...long shots It's a 75-300mm. If you can afford to own a pair (and have a case to carry 'em), these two are a pretty complete set. |

I was using a 70200 at an Italian Car Festival that a neighbor had in their yard yesterday. Actually . . . . I was shooting the cars with a 24-70mm but periodically went to the 70-200mm to get some candid shots of some of the Italian gals who drove their Ferrari's and Lamborghini's to the event. There's something about a bland mom in a Ferrari California that just seemed "Image Worthy and I didn't want, to get the close up. . .to have to walk right up next to her . . . somehow her hub looked like someone I didn't want to get crossways with.

I have a 55-200 VR lens, interested? I bought it shortly after buying my D90 and never use it, I usually grab my 70-300 for that range. |

Just remember the "crop factor" if the lens is for a 35mm SLR,unless you have a full frame sensor in that Nikon. |

That would be a pretty good choice Frank. |

I am going to pull the trigger on a 18-200... I would not mind having a 55-200 to play with.. I do not take the best pictures but I do enjoy it.. I have always been amazed at people that do this for a living or just as hobby so well. Frank |

Look at the 18-300 tamron, I like mine, and it is light. |

Frank got your PM, just got home from work. I'll have to look tomorrow for what that lens is going for used, I'm pretty beat right now. It's a great lens but I have a 70-300 & 200-500 so it gets little to no use. |

FYI - The Tamron and Sigma 18-200mm lenses are pretty slow, especially at full zoom, and the auto-focus may not be able to work reliably because of it. I was going to get the Tamron before reading this and have instead opted to save a few more pennies for the Nikkor 18-200 which is a faster lens. |
