I was surprised that the vote was 619-507, I guess lots of workers just wanted to stick it to Harley, with no regards for their job, and that really reflects what the moral is there. Harley wanted this passed, so they paid off the laid off workers, and it worked. |

>>>>that really reflects what the moral is there And that's the tip of the "Ketih-berg". Talk to some of the execs and you can hear the fear in their voices. The good ones have walked . . . . the ones remaining are going home each night answering to wives wondering if they are in the next round of cuts or where the company will be moving to . . . .where will the kids go to school. Wandell has succeeded in inducing stress into not only the jobs, but the home life, of over a thousand folks. Quietly . . and they'd never say this . . .they could care less about a company that has proven it could care less about them. Publicly they espouse leather jackets, rebellious ads, and chrome . . . but quietly they'd love to see Keith and John have a taste of what they are going through. It's sort of a shame. There some really talented folks, union and management, there and they are being played for fools. When the tide shifts . . . . not sure I'd want to be Keith. "Harley wanted this passed, so they paid off the laid off workers, and it worked." Yeah, wasn't it like 12 grand?? That might sway some votes... |

The upside of collective bargaining is that you get to aggregate your power to hopefully negotiate for a better working environment and better wages. The down side is that all are now party to any new contract. This sucks for the HD workers and their families. Ultimately, there wasn't a choice whether this was the outcome or not. There was only the illusion of a choice. There will be more cuts to come. Some at manufacturing, some at corporate, some at marketing, some at engineering and R&D, some in finance. There is a difference between a surgeon and an killer with a knife. It isn't the knife. |

Gotta hand it to the King Douche... he surely did manipulate the media oh so well... now I see the rumors about going to another state or going to India were carefully planned and constructed... I am almost disgusted enough to get rid of both Buells to buy a Beemer... every time I give a cent to those at the MoFo (HD oil or replacement parts) my soul dies a litlle. |

Was there any question about the manipulation? Don't know if the threat was real or not. Don't know if they would have actually moved or not. Really, though, is there any other threat more useful in the us vs. them, management vs. labor fight? Regardless of state regulations, all states are right to work states. Management always has the capacity to simply relocate the labor elsewhere. |

Why is it when I think of Harley-Davidson now days, three letters come to mind, AMF? |

Yep. That said, HD was brighter and better post AMF. It will take a Wandell to give someone the podium to make real changes at HD the free reign to do so. The good news is that if the engineering stayed exactly where it is now, HD would be better off than during the AMF days. What if HD sucked so bad in a few years that a sportbike company direction was the only thing to keep the company alive? |

>>>Now Keith gets his bonus from the worst corporate board out there, paid for by the workers. An accurate statement, most likely in all respects.
quote: 5 of the worst corporate boards The embedded board Harley-Davidson (HOG, news, msgs) still has what's known as a classified board, which means that only a portion of directors are up for re-election in any given year, instead of the whole bunch. This creates two problems for shareholders. "If you have someone really bad, you have to wait to vote them out," says Lindsley, of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees. It also discourages takeovers, because potential buyers have to wait so long to seat new board members. This can lead to complacent management. So you have to give Harley-Davidson credit for offering shareholders the chance to eliminate this board structure by voting against it at the company's annual meeting April 24. Hopefully, they will come through. But Harley-Davidson's board has additional problems. One director owns Deeley Imports, the exclusive distributor of Harley-Davidson motorcycles in Canada. So he does a lot of business with the managers he is supposed to oversee. Harley-Davidson spokesman Robert Klein responds that the director gets the same terms anyone else would in the open market, so there is no conflict, and that his "deep knowledge of the motorcycle industry and the Harley-Davidson business is a valuable benefit." Another director, Jochen Zeitz, missed nearly 30% of meetings last year, which seems curious given that five of the 11 board meetings were held by phone. Harley-Davidson says he has trouble attending all meetings because he lives in Europe. "Well, he shouldn't be on the board then," says Barrett, of The Corporate Library. But Klein says, "As the company continues to expand the international mix of its business, we believe it is advantageous to have international representation on the board." Besides these problems, three directors have been on the board for more than 15 years. Harley-Davidson says more than half of the directors came on board after 2002 and that having this kind of mix of new and long-standing directors makes for a better board. At least Harley's entrenched board hasn't showered excessive pay on top execs. But you have to wonder whether they've been pushing management hard enough. Harley-Davidson stock has significantly underperformed the market over the past five years. Sure, you can blame the economy. Hogs are expensive, after all. But Morningstar analyst Philip Gorham thinks a big part of the problem is that the company has been too focused on one demographic: middle-aged males. Harley-Davidson responds that it hired a new CEO last May and that it has recently consolidated plants and struck new labor agreements that bring down costs and provide more flexibility with its work force. It's also selling off motorcycle brands to focus on the Harley name, expanding internationally and marketing more to younger men and women, and to minorities. Analysts at Gradient Analytics predict things will only get worse this year. During the 12 months through September 2009, Harley-Davidson shipped too many motorcycles to dealers, and inventories rose at the company as well, Gradient says. Plus more motorcycles have been sold on credit in recent years, Gradient says, suggesting that -- just like in the housing market -- more sales could go bad if employment remains soft. Harley-Davidson says its own inventories and dealer inventories improved in the fourth quarter of last year and that a dealer survey by brokerage Robert W. Baird released in March found that nearly three-fourths of dealers believed inventory was "about right." The company says loan quality is improving because 80% to 85% of loans were considered "prime" last year, compared with 75% in prior years. At the time of publication, Michael Brush did not own shares of any company mentioned in this column.

What is so so so so funny is... oh well... nevermind... Iv'e been moderately wealthy, I have been on the extreme end of poor... me, I prefer earned wealth hands down... and no strings attached since I was 24 years old... It is always about people who think there is only one pie. Don't take a piece of my pie! I mean, I been cutting down unions all day, and making quick public appearances, and laying off people, oh, did I forget to mention I just went golfing... Corporate greed is still that, corporate greed, no matter how you present it... it does not work for the majority of the people... just ask anyone who has been laid off in their life... it sucks... Glad to see ya back Rocco... |
