I've toured both of those Harley plants up in Tomahawk. One is a fairly new facility and both places have great friendly workers there. It's just so sad to see the Harley Board of Directors has done to all their loyal employees, starting with the killing off of the Buell brand.

I don't want to see anyone lose their job.

BUT, if your sells are down 80% + or - then something has got to give.
Ya just can't keep crank'n out bikes and sticking them in a showroom and let them collect dust.

The Buell deal pisses me off... They should have sold it to BRP and saved 200 jobs.

maybe they are just reaping what they have sown

and Char... I don't think you could find your A$$ with a funnel....

HD is a CORPORATION. It is not a family owned business. It has no soul and the executives don't get paid to have one. They are paid to produce a profit for the shareholders of which many "average Joe's" pensions, etc are invested. Blame it on Wall Street and other financial firms which pushed mutual funds, etc to the masses and thus created the drive to gobble up every family run business and turn it into a cash machine.

Sometimes the "bonus" paid to executives is to be the most effective hatchet man the Board of Directors can find.

If you want to see the driver behind the compensation package, seek out the 10-K/A Annual Report with the compensation structure report.

You'll know the benchmarks of performance.

My guess is that Wandell is meeting all the bonus criteria chopping like a maniacal lumber jack.

Family businesses and unions don't really go together. A family business implies common goals among all. Union implies and adversarial relationship. Not trying play a blame game, simply pointing out a difference.

So when did HD get a union? Anyone know the answer? I'll bet it hasn't felt like a family business for at least as long as they've had a union work force.

Here's what I believe is the key to BMW's success (weak Euro aside):

BMW, which had cut its workforce significantly ahead of the downturn that began in 2008, said it will begin cautiously hiring again, adding 1,000 workers to the existing staff of 95,500, primarily in research and development as well as purchasing and sales.

Harley bumped off it's only real innovative branch where the R&D was going on (Buell) and is going to ride the nostalgia wave into the ground.

That comment about the workers being inbetween a rock and a hard place is spot on.

Current trend seems to be paint it flat black.

This has advantages. Ask any home bike modifier. Flat black, even better, crinkle black, hides lots of sloppy work.

I do admit I liked the new flat colors they came out with a few years back. Not as radical as transparent bodywork, but still hot stuff for a tradition bound company.

I can't even blame them for being tradition bound. Unless the execution is superb, new doesn't sell in a nostalgia market. Even when it's good quality, you have to SELL the new stuff, and most HD stores long ago lost the idea of how to sell. Again, IMHO.

The best 2 bikes HD has made in the last decade were the sporty versions of the water bison and Sportster. Again IMHO. I actually feel bad that I didn't have the bucks to buy them, since no one else did either. ( I'm still mad at myself for passing on a sweet deal on a XR100 back in the day, too )

I love it... been gearing up for a while without investing new money into HD... Hepco Becker bags... had some service re warranty related at a HD dealership... but seems the local sportbike shops are treating the Piglet just fine...

not all sales of motorcycles are down. Some companies have better leadership.

Ducati, BMW, and Triumph all three have seen increases in sales when other companies have lost ground.

They are gigantic... but I love them... will take some getting used to the new look... then when I get to the Smokies I can just pop them off and ride with just the rack...

Wow, the Hepco Becker site is horrible. Anyway, I kinda like the black Gobi luggage. Looks like you need the stock cheese grater to mount the rack though.

Oh, and was flat black mentioned? Guilty, but my inspiration is from Mad Max.

Yeah, you have to take off the rear peg mounts and the blinkers... set up the blinkers on an extension behind the hard bags... then you have to wire them in... they provided some snap on wire extensions, but I have seen the shop has hard wired them in there, which is good, since any salt and moisture might rust out your connection...

Sorry for the thread hijack...

More photos of the bags on FB here...
You might have to send a friend request to see them... (copy and paste)...
