I do a fair amount of riding around reservoirs, lakes, ponds, etc. and I am looking for ideas on a good fishing rig setup should I decide to pull over and take a break. Something compact, collapsible, or telescoping that can fit into a backpack would be ideal. I know there are plenty of them out there, I was looking for suggestions of ones fellow badwebbers have personally used or know of. Thanks!

They are never as good as a "real" rod, but they are fine for what you want to do. They come as packages, you might want to put new/better line on it, but heck, for occasional use, I'd say just grab one and have fun. iirc, the reel mount is standard, so you can always upgrade the reel, too. Wallyworld has a ton of small tackle kits to make that part easier to carry in a pack, too.

Remember the Popeil Pocket Fisherman? I've been meaning to get one of those things myself.

I've seen the Pocket Fisherman used by MTBers with good success. Once you get past the jokes it's really not a bad idea and is quite rugged.

On a possibly less serious note, when you successfully land those fish you may find a need for a Wunder Boner...

Every guy should have a Wunder Boner. "My wife would like that!"

Oh my.

I had forgotten about the "Pocket Fisherman." Send before midnight tonight and we'll also include 6 extra teaspoons.

Oh my. A mis-spent youth. All those hours in front of the TV, watchin' Tennessee Tuxedo, 'n schtuff like that.

Back on topic, the rod/reel combo I have is telescoping, so it ends up looking fairly normal to fish with. Wouldn't want to land a huge lunker on it, but then again, it might do just fine.

I have a collapsible graphite rod from Bass Pro with 4 pound test on it... great fun to carry around on the bike for just playing.

I put an open face reel on it, then later switched it to a tiny little zebco retro closed face reel. Packs up nice and small, a fun little package, doubt I spent more than $25 on the whole setup.

Didn't the Pocket Fisherman have a zebco reel in it? I don't know if you could upgrade the reel, but it's hard to see why not.

I recently bought one. I have not got it wet yet but did put some line on it and did a few test casts. It works surprisingly well! It's a micro-ultralite pole and reel that is seriously packable. Bought if from Fast and Light.com. They have 3 styles and they are only $25.

Longest web link I've ever seen but it gets you there.

I recommend the trigger cast.
These things are fun and pack to 2 1/2'.

You can cast the smallest of spinning lures.
Also you can easily cast a night crawler without a weight a good twenty yards.

I've got the Ronco Pocket Fisherman. MANY years of intermittent use with no maintenance whatsoever. I've caught quite a few catfish and trout with it.

A buddy of mine used to carry a pocket fisherman pole in his golf bag for those slow days with long waits at the T boxes, back when I played a lot of golf in central Florida. It was a lot of fun, but nearly got us tossed from a couple of courses!

I know your talking about a spinning setup but a four piece flyrod packs small and very fun to catch one on a fly.

BTW the Journey bags make a great cooler.
