We've lived in Colorado for 14 years and we finally, just made it to the top of Mt. Evans today! Don't know why we waited so long. The gear stayed on due to the temp and HIGH winds. The road at the top was kind of like riding on the edge of a lasagna noodle just without the sauce. I guess that's what happens to pavement at 14,000'. Will post more pics on Tail Section, soon.

Wowsas, that brings back memories! We were there for Thunder in the Mountain in 2001, which was probably the wettest July in history. I was determined to feel what it was like to smoke a cigarette at 14,000 feet even though I am not a smoker.

That cigarette saved my life.

Mt. Evans wasn't as pretty as your pictures that day. A huge rain cell was a thousand feet BELOW us and rapidly heading our way. Al Lighton hopped on his S3 and skeedaddled. I, on the other hand, climbed the final rockpile to smoke my cigarette that I had bummed from a cager. Al hit a hail storm and decided to drop his bike in front of a blind curve rather than being hit by an oncoming car or hurtling over the edge into the void.

I came trundling down a few minutes later with my newly acquired nicotine buzz.

If Al reads this, he might tell the tale of what happened next because it was even more epic than his fall.

I did trail ridge road a few years ago, through the continental divide. Just breath-taking. I think the best time I had was rolling for about 5 miles with the motor off. Those pictures are making me jones, Thanks.

Tom, that event was EPIC!
IAMike and I didn't make it to the top that year due to the storm. We met up with everyone at Bojo's afterward..
Then it rained again....
Remember the mud slide?

A year or so later Mike and I finally made it to the top of Evans, man, what a view!
The "lodge" that used to be up there must have been something in the day..

That year we ran into ice, rain, snow, sleet and hail! As Al about hail and almost sliding off the mountain!!! If that wasn't bad enough he had to ride through the mudslide that closed I-70 on his S3T.

Besides that it was a great trip.

Later

Back in '01 the rear brake on the S3 quit working around 12k feet which made the hail much more interesting to ride through.

The big horn sheep were neat to see.

I'm sure there are pics of the event around here somewhere...

I ran up to the top of Mt. Evans back in 2005 after hours during our first consumer demo after we launched the Ulysses. Tony Stefanelli and I ran to the top in a thick freezing fog. (thats Tony in the shot - it was the first time he got to ride the bike outside of development testing). We scraped pegs on the approach road and then the fog set in and we were standing on the pegs trying to see the single lane road to the top - what a way to break in a new bike!!!

Yep, did Pike's Peak in June and guess what? Apparently all roads up to 14,000 ft look about the same. I can't believe people actually race up to the summit.

Cool ride though, huh?

I remember as we finally made it up on the 2nd try the little old lady driving right down the middle of the road because there was no way she was going to get close to the edge.

Been there, but by car, not Buell.
Seems like it would be more fun going up on a bike, than down.

Four times via car. Weather precluded bike assault. Amazing place. Paved all the way up, unlike Pike's, but much narrower.

Rode Mt. Evans and Pike's Peak in June. Both well worth the trip, I did like the road up Mt. Evans better.

I rode up Mt. Washington in New Hampshire last week. Much smaller hill, but the road is much hairier.
