When I had only the RK, I went a lot of places that others thought were crazy. The Uly is a much more FUN in tough situations. A KTM 990 even more so. I've done 4000 mile trips on the RK and was heading to Alaska on the Uly when it met its demise. If I was limited to one bike, it would be a Uly or similar ride. I'm sure you can play a round of golf with only a seven iron. What's your point though? It's my opinion, and that of others, that a driver is better off the tee and a putter is better suited on the green. | ||

I'm not even close.  Yep, your experience gains you an attentive audience in my book - at least you've got seat time on both motorcycles in question. What's my point, you ask? None, really. Every know and then I feel compelled to try to dispel myths about Harley-Davidsons that I know are not true. It's a tough sell on this board sometimes, particularly since last October, and I try to walk a fine line. My Bagger is not a better bike than a Uly. By the same token, it is not worse. Both work, and work well, and I'll take (and have taken) my Road King into less than ideal conditions, usually with favorable results. You still didn't answer me about Lippincott Mine trail in DV, and why I couldn't take the RK down it. No worries - I suspect I'd have kept up with you just fine. Regards, FB | ||

I've got 75,000 miles on my Road King, and 27,000 miles on my Uly. I can't ride anything as fast as anybody, and don't really do knarly off road stuff, but here's my opinion: Just a side note. The RK has been worked on a little, so it makes about 95 tq and hp at the rear wheel, (or did at one time!) The Uly is a better bike day in and day out. Lighter, faster (with the same rider effort) easier to get around town with, easier to clean, better gas mileage, etc. The RK always gets to go on the long trips. Cruise control, highway pegs, big windshield, back rest make eating miles much more comfortable. the wife doesn't like riding on the back of the Uly, take that as a plus or minus. The Uly has been a lot less reliable, with all the common maladies, wheel bearings and belts stranding me at one time or another. Eventually getting parts (i.e. belts) for the Uly is going to get tough. Overall, the Uly is a better bike, but if I could only keep one, I'd keep the RK. That said, I'd like to try out one of those new Triumph Sprint GTs for touring. 130 hp and 550 lbs might be kind of fun. | ||

Well I've had both and my actions speak louder than words... I had a nice Ultra Classic Electra Glide for years, mildly tweaked, nothing really spectacular, mostly stock. I picked up my Uly 2 years ago... the Ultra got traded this spring... bye bye HD... The Uly IS my road bike now, period. IMHO it has better everything except one... styling... i LOVE the bike don't get me wrong but I think even us Buell diehards can agree that a nice shiny Ultra looks nicer than the plastic beaked Uly  That said here's the breakdown; Storage - Uly by a long shot, I can get more into the bags and I can find things in them easier too because of the side opening. Plus the side opening provides some handy campground shelves if you need. Performance - 475lb / 100HP vs 850 / 70 .... don't think I need to explain that... Suspension - I ran over a deer carcass at 65mph and the Uly hopped right over it, maintained it's stability and didn't even wobble... on any other bike without that massive suspension travel I'm sure I would have went down... Ride - Close but the Uly gets it... the suspension on the Uly just absorbs more bumps and provides a smoother ride and a more stable and confident feel. The Ultra is nice but I don't feel near as confident. Comfort - Close... the Uly has that heat issue which is a legitimate gripe but that's really about it, seat design, bar location are perfect. I prefer forward pegs though so the Ultra gets points for seating position but that can be fixed with the fwd peg kit from across the pond for $250. Wow factor - everybody and their brother has a HD bagger anymore... show up on the Uly and you'll get some looks... (mainly WTF looks but looks nonetheless) If I had the cash to customize it as I've seen done here I am sure it could be turned into a real sharp looker. Maintenance - ever change a rear tire on a bagger? omfg... now compare that to the 10 minutes it takes to get a wheel off the Uly, front or rear... it's cake... my only gripe about the Uly is those two front chin spoiler torx screws you have to yank for every oil filter change... Economy - my bagger usually got about 35mpg @80-85mph loaded up... the Uly gets about 45-50mpg with the same loads Cost - comparing a used bike with 20-30k miles, ultra - $15k Uly - $6k... Seems like a no brainer to me... unless you're after something 'cool' looking the Uly whoops the Ultra hands down...imho... superdave | ||

Jerry, You ever seen Moles Rd off of Buffalo Mnt Rd.It starts out a rough gravel rd & turns into a creekbed with big rocks in a few hundred yards.I was on a rigid frame HD chopper & my friend "Mole" was on his Road King & we had to check it out,well we got down it about a quarter mile before we decided to turn around.My bike was easy.400lbs & short wheelbase,his was another story.It was fun & I still have not completed that road yet.I tried last year on the XR650R & a large downed tree stopped me.Maybe somebody cut the tree up & I'll try again. | ||

Yeah, I've ridden Moles Road several times, but I thought it was 100% paved? It's Moles Road you have to turn off to take the gravel road (easy enough, except for one tricky switchback) up to the trail head to the top of Buffalo Mountain. In any event, let's hook up and see if we can conquer that creek bed. FB | ||

Of course darned near anything can be ridden on dirt roads, heck I used to ride H1 Kawasakis on motocross tracks (pre doubles days). But it doesn't mean the bikes actually work well at it. A Ulysses will in almost all cases beat a bagger on the road (maybe not for total weight capacity), and it will destroy a Road Glide off road. | ||

Depends on who is riding it. Our stunt man can smoke me on the dirt on pretty much anything. Adds: There's right tool for the job for sure. But it doesn't mean the other's can't do the job every now and then. (Message edited by danger_dave on August 12, 2010) | ||

Even the rider would have limits to deal with.. I can only compare it to this... It would be like taking an XR650 on a motorcross track against a CRF450. Can it do it maybe, but how many jumps will it make before something breaks. Not to mention trying to find someone to actually take it on a full blown track to begin with. Oh, so when your stunt rider is on the bagger it works well off road? BS. We are talking bikes not riders. If he beats you riding a H-D while you are on the Buell, he will crush you if you swap. What is it with you and Jerry arguing indefinitely for H-D's over Buells in such situations when you know it isn't true? | ||

I love my XT, and wouldn't trade it for a bagger, however, for pure comfort, I have found the ElectraGlide more comfortable for long days in the saddle. My XT is still pretty comfortable, but the big fairing and highway pegs make the bagger more comfortable to me. And I haven't ridden with Ferris, (never met him but would love to), but I have ridden with a guy on a Road King that I couldn't keep up with in the mountains on my Super Glide. I haven't tried on my XT. Truth is, it wasn't the bike, he is just faster than me. | ||
