We have a lot of asphalt here right now... anyone know what to use to get it off of my rear fender and swingarm... will acetone just eat my paint away? Will S100 work on asphalt?

wd-40 is good for a lot of stuff. even use it to get the bugs off the bike if i don't want to waste the time washing it.

wd-40 is pretty safe. Another is the tar remover sold through Mopar, ie. chrysler dealers have it in an aerosol can. I used it on my car in the past.

If it's the oil from the asphalt I second the gasoline.

Wet a towel with gas and wipe the stuff off then rinse with water. Repeat as needed.

It's the only thing that works at the work yard when we wash the trucks (paving company).

Cool. I will try gasoline.
It is the tar from the asphalt actually.

Asphalt is a byproduct of coal gassification. Otherwise known as "coal tar".

Nasty little stuff. They have it in the groundwater and oozing out into the bay in Ashland, WI.

Since there are so few coke oven byproducts plants in the US anymore, I believe that the main source of asphalt is oil refineries as the leftovers of the heavy fractions of crude oil. Such as http://minnesota.publicradio.org/display/web/2007/ 07/20/superiorrefinery/
in Superior, WI.

You are probably correct.

The place I was talking about was shut down in the late 70's I believe. Considering Superfund (US law making rp's-resonsible parties- pay for their cleanup) did not come around until 1980.

The company responsible (in Ashland) had been polluting starting in the 1920's and 1930's when people pretty much had no clue what the heck they were doing to the environment...

That Superior Area has been a mess for some time now... surprised npr article doesn't mention the ongoing cleanup there, of which Murphy is one of the rp's...

Just remember, anytime you use something like that, clean it off real good and WAX the area because you also just stripped all that protection off.

3M adhesive cleaner is gentle on the paint and plastic, unlike gasoline and was made for removing tar and adhesives on paint and plastic.

You could even soak it with motor oil and then wipe it clean with mineral spirits.

I second Swampy (baby oil)
WD-40
Diesel

Hope everyone was kidding about using gasoline, vapor pressure is very low and the fumes (vapors) ignite very easily. Please don't use gasoline!!!

Problem is using the baby to spread the oil - it might not hurt but they always start squealing. Maybe I'm not holding them right?
