Very nice bike. Not buell fun level - but a very good ADV beast I reckon. Nicest one I've tested for a while. Liked the Moto Morini Granpasso but that's too exotic to be viable this far out on the rim and the EFI wasn't quite right. This thing ticks all my boxes apart from stunt-ability and maybe looks. I'd want to ride it and a Tiger one after the other to determine an XB12X replacement if and when.    | ||

It *looks* massive. Then again, so does a BMW GS. Any idea on how much it weighs? Not really my cup of tea, but if Yamaha put the motor in a light cafe racer or streetfighter style bike... Mmm mmm!  Just hope no one who had anything to do with the MT-01 gets involved...  Nice pics as always DD. I like the last one especially. | ||

Shaft drive dual sports, sweet! If I wasn't so hardcore "different", I would buy one. But my money is still going towards a GS or an RT and a dual sport. | ||

with multistradas and ulysses's around, i wouldn't even be looking at this bike. no vee engine, & 575lbs. i scoped out the motomorini on the web, and i'd choose it in a heartbeat over this, as well. according to one article i read, its fuel injection is completely seamless in its power delivery. seems whatever fuel injection issues noted by danger dave can be rectified. doug s. | ||

Various responses: The Tenere costs +/-25% less that the GS in the NZ market and the only real advantage I see that the GS has is low speed 'strength'. The big boxer flywheel means it ticks over better at lower speeds. No vee engine. Didn't make that much difference - the 270 even sounds as good. Yes - it's a big bike - the Uly felt like a city-x when I jumped back on to ride home. The Yam still handles great on all sorts of roads and in much more stable than the Uly on gravel. The problem with Moto Morini (if they have the mapping right now) is they are bankrupt with an uncertain future. I couldn't own a multistrada. Lovely bike to ride and I look forward to testing the 1200 one day - and I agree that adv bikes generally have had the ugly stick waved at them - but I think then new one looks absolutely absurd. Comical. | ||

I quite like it, I liked the old SuperTen, which morphed into the TDM, & then had it's 270° parallel lump stuffed into the TRX850, a bike I lusted after for a long time despite it's poor gearchange. Like: Looks like a handy tool & should be reasonably priced, as it's all electronic should be easy to tune with a remap. Dislike; The fact that it's not single side swingarm when it's shaft driven, I mean that's soooo last century. Would I buy one? probably not. I am kinda sorta looking for a bike of this ilk for playing on the forest roads in the Jura & the Alps & blasting in comfort across France in a day when I need to. I'm currently leaning heavily towards a Moto Guzzi Stelvio. Ta for the pics Dave, nice work (as usual). | ||

I personally think the Yamaha is a superior bike to the Stelvio. In short if you 'wap' the throttle hard on the Tenere it wheelstands - do the same on the Guzzi and it says 'Who? Me?...hang on a minute, nah'. | ||

The other thing about the stelvio grumps is that you know how the Buell gets to highway cruising speeds and it 'smooths out'. The Stelv does the opposite - the worst of the engines vibes are at 65mph and it smooths out at 85. That might be perfect for Euro conditions, dunno - but it's not ideal out on the islands any more. | ||

Sorry disjointed - I'm doing other jobs at the same time. All I had to pick on with the Yamaha is the graphics are kinda dorky. I mean we're Buell owners so engine vibes don't bother us particularly anyway, and the 1200 vert twin is not without a shudder now and then, but it bugged me slightly on the stelv. Not so the yam. The Stelv was brilliant on the dirt roads, the motor very well suited to spooling up in third and hammering it. Very yummy - but then if you are doing lots of dirt it has the Uly fail. No knobby tyres for a 180 section rear. The Yam certainly felt up to it on gravel and we're sticking proper ADV tyres on it this week. Looks like a 19" front wheel. That's a deal breaker for me. If I had the cash, I'd be riding a new Multistrada. I would like to try the Tiger as well. | ||

Once again I am apparently in the minority as I wanted a more dirt worthy Uly. Offroad, the KTM 990 smokes all these others. Onroad, with a set of Conti Trail Attacks, it'll eat up asphalt as well as my abilities allow. I just finished a two-week, 5000 mile run and had a blast. Costs less the the BMW or Yami, too. | ||

Trouble with the KTM is it's the least comfortable of all of them - rider and pillion - for the touring component of what makes a great 'beast'. That said - I do dig that 990SM a lot. | ||

Dave... I agree re the 990 KTM, until the 990 SM-T came out. Liked it so much I actually bought one. Have done one 800 mile day, and a couple of 400 mile days. Also did a 4-day, 1,200 mile event on a press bike. It's a lot lighter than the Uly, handles better and is quicker/faster. It is buzzier, and can't haul as much, tho. | ||

Ahh - got it - I'd leave the Battle wings on it. my preferred riding in on roads like the top pic these days - and there are enough around here to make it viable. | ||

Wheel diameter doesn't matter as much as long as they adjust the headset angle and offset, so that the trail works out correctly. Mountain bikes have 2 standards wheel sizes now. 26" and 29" diameter. The fork off sets are different to adjust for the tire contact patch. |
