Yea, gotta get some parts ordered after the holiday.

BTW if anyone was @ homecoming this is the sick Blast that was being operated on by a bunch of drunks. It apparently was a bit more than just a Ignition Coil.

Yes spidey you did. I told them to stop at an hr labor and apparently that didn't leave enough time to take the 5 mins to pull the tank off and do the comp test

At least we know what that clanging noise is coming form the motor.

So you think the pour in a quart, get a case of beer, pour in a quart of oil, ride home thing had any impact on the motor?

Sorry man. I Wish you'd bought ours. : (

On a brighter note, maybe you can punch out the displacement while you are replacing the piston and cylinder.

Jeremy - yea very fixable i am looking at the 515 kit probably what I will end up doing its @ barkers right now just waiting to be put back together

Jim - I am actually really happy about finding it because it is a problem and until today i haven't been able to find a problem other than the damn thing wouldn't start. I am also glad that it didn't spit me off though, that would have made for a much less enjoyable homecoming.

On the bright side, the "big bore" kit costs almost the same as stock, it's super easy to re-build, and when you're done, it'll be a B-A-Blast.

+1 on the big bore kit upgrade.

It's nice when adversity leads to advancement.

Will - I'm sorry to hear that the problems have not ended for you. Perhaps it is a good thing the prior owner/criminal lives so far away. It was good to meet you (& Barker) in person at homecoming. Good luck getting back on the road and with your next Buell. Boiler

Interesting... when you guys were working in parking lot and said that when you turned it over, you were getting pressure out of the crankcase. That is a sure sign of blow-by.

Couple of us who have seen this before kinda/sorta hinted at that very problem.

LIKELY caused by pinging/detonation. Cheap gas, timing, too lean... especially if riding sustained/high speed - a "little ping" can slowly chip away at the piston.

Also wanted to second the recommendation of a bolt-on big bore kit! (since you need new piston and likely a cylinder)

PM me for specific recommendations if you're interested. I have 2 Blast engines being built (and rebuilt) for racing. I melted the Blast piston in our Singles class race at Willow Springs 2 weeks before Homecoming - and also holed the piston in the Twin. 2 melted pistons, one day... Stupid, stupid, stupid on my part.

First pic, the 'erosion' looks like detonation damage.

Second, looks like 'dry piston' damage.

Make *absolutely sure* you jet it properly when you put it back on the road.

This - and years of playing with high-boost turbocars - is exactly why I always spend a couple extra bucks on rebuilds and get FORGED pistons. Sure, detonation can still erode the ring lands...but it takes a LOT longer!

That is from detonation and/or running lean...it is not a lube problem....as far as the big bore kit goes...I wouldn't...I have seen several of those fail the piston on the intake side above the top ring land..mechanical failure...no detonation or other heat related damage....just broken.

While you have it apart, have the quench area recut on the head to match the piston you will be using...from the factory they are mismatched enough to cause detonation from trapped rich spots...and if possible, send the head in and get a set of one piece stainless valves...the XB beehive springs and retainers...and a set of B-50 cams if you can find any...jetting on the carb should be 45-48 pilot and 175-180 main (on average)....there is a guy named Dan from the thumper forum that sells a reinforced carb couple (superboot) on E-bay....get one.

Don't forget to keep the old parts for making furniture or ashtrays or recycling into art.

(Drives my wife mad when I do that.)

My wife being an artist always wants to do things like that. In fact she wanted her mom to teach her how to weld so she can make statues with metal parts. I thought it was a good idea until she told me if she did I better not piss her off because I would come home to my bike looking like a statue.
