So I got pulled over on the way to work this morning on the bike. I guess I didn’t see him for a bit as I have no rear-view mirrors and was wearing earplugs. So when I see him ( by Randhurst) I pull over turn off the engine drop my keys on the ground take off my helmet. Get off the bike put the helmet on the ground take out my ear plugs and turn around. Much to my surprise I see a cop with his gun drawn telling me to put my hands on my head.

Eventually I get him to calm down. He tells me that he was behind me for awhile. I nicely tell him sorry and I didn’t know he was there I have no rear-view mirror. So he points and says what the hell are those? To which I say “side mirrors” he asks for my license I give it to him and he scans my Ins card in my wallet. Then he tells me I was doing 60 in a 40. Which I might add was not true. He also says he saw me adjusting my jacket will doing this speed. Which I did un zip my jacket and adjust it a bit but that requires my right hand. (So tell me how I can accelerate to that rate of speed without my hand on the throttle. Then he goes back to his car comes back gives me my license and tells me to leave. Also as far as him being behind me if he had used his siren other than a chirp i would have heard him. much like the ambulance that I heard and moved out of the way of later in the ride.

All I can say is wow.

He probably thought you were going to try to run. I got waved to by a LEO on a motorcycle yesterday. It was a very enthusiastic wave like the "OMG HELLO TO YOU" from the hand signals video.

My post at ATC:
Took the long way home this evening to gawk at the river floods. I wasn't exactly wasting time between the many area river crossings. Open road and running 80+ and coming up to a stop sign intersection. Braked hard at a 1/4 mile out and just cruised to the sigh. Trooper going by evidently spotted me "at speed" but kept on going. I crossed the intersection and thought I seen "lights" and figured he maybe caught somebody......and lost sight on him over the hill. Nope,he was evidently turning around. I ran slow for a mile and saw nothing in my mirror and hit it hard again. Slowed for a T intersection a couple more miles down the road and suddenly, there he was behind me. He had to be running hard to catch up to me. Painfully rode 3 miles at 55 and slowed for the 2 marked 40mph curves that I had planned on hitting hard. Rode another 2 miles into the next town and wondered what he was waiting for....he simply had to of had me............ then the lights came on. I shut her down as I didn't want the D&D to be an added issue. He said: "You normally don't ride that slow in those corners do you? You must have seen me?"
Yep,I seen you and thought I better be good.

Two VERBAL warnings. He did seen me at speed earlier. I admitted that I was letting it run free for a bit.Odd that he didn't have me tagged with radar when he was catching up to me. Second warning was for passing him last week when he was in his personal van. He said he reconized the helmet! Not the jacket, not the bike......just the helmet! Usually when I pass somebody,I speed up and then "coast" past who ever I am passing as to not blast them with the D%D. I must have done that when I passed him.................if I had blasted him........I probably would have got written up today. He was very nice to me,considering I figured I was had. Maybe it was the full gear and the "working man" lunch bucket/work uniform strapped to the back? Either way,it just takes the wind out on my sails to enjoy the work rides. First time I have been stopped on a motorcycle in 35 years.....color me.....damned lucky! Oh yeah,he didn't ask for my license, registration or insurance card! Maybe he ran my plate when I passed his personal van and found that I was "clean"? Pretty sure he was on his way home at the end of his shift...that might have made a difference. Either way,I was "dirty" and he let me off......

I had an encounter with a LEO on Tuesday evening that could have gone a whole lot worse. Some idiot driver in front of me came to a screeching stop on an off ramp despite 2 signs that say "Keep Moving" so I stopped behind him. He then appeared to notice the signs and proceeded to merge on the hwy and then again for no apparent reason suddenly slammed on his brakes. I had had a long day and just wanted to be home so I said enough of this game and took off in the left lane to put some distance between myself and the idiot (who knows what he might do next). But, when I checked my mirror to get back over I noticed a cop behind me and also noticed I was doing 67 indicated in a 40mph zone, oops. He never turned his lights on but pulled up next to me and gave me the "don't pull that crap again" look and took off. He must have been behind me the whole time and had seen everything go down so he was probably just as fed up with the other driver as I was.

And to the OP, after seeing that video of the cop shooting the biker in the back a few weeks ago I can't help but think you got lucky. I probably would have sh&t myself if I turned around and saw that.

After seeing the video of the cop shooting the biker in the back I think I'm just gonna turn off my bike and put my hands on my helmet if I get pulled over. Actually, the one time I've been pulled over on my bike that almost what I did.
I turned off the bike and sat there with my helmet on until the officer approched me and asked me to remove my helmet.
He ended up letting me go with a warning.

I've only had a cop draw on me once and that was an experience I wouldn't want to repeat. I was asleep in the backseat when my friend got pulled over. I guess the officers didn't see me and when I awoke and sat up they freaked, drew thier weapons, and dragged me out of the car. Damn near got shot for falling asleep while my friend ran a yellow light.

Last time I pulled over, I mean, got pulled over on a bike was in Arizona in like 79 or 80. There was a whole list of offenses and the LEOs were going to take me to jail until they saw my badge in the billfold. I still got a ticket but got it taken off my record.

I leave the bags on my Uly sleeper. Don't get looked at as hard as the rockets and hogs.

As much as I hate those stinking radar guns, I have to give LEOs a lot of credit. They have a tough job, and put their lives on the line every time they go to work. Don't forget, cops don't just do traffic patrol, they're also dealing with domestic violence, pedophiles, junkies, and the rest of the scumbags that we have the privilege of avoiding. The cop that pulls you over may have just broken up a domestic fight, and he might not be in such a good mood.

As many times as I've gotten a ticket, there were about a thousand times I should have, and didn't.

A few days ago in Tampa, a police officer pulls over a car. He finds the passenger had a warrant and called for back up. His back up arrived and they go to put the passenger in cuffs. The POS pulls a gun and shoots BOTH cops dead. He gets back in the car and his POS girlfriend drives him away... Shooter is still at large...

2 days prior to the Tampa incident, 2 officers are shot when they stopped a person on a bicycle. The POS was shot dead. The officers are recovering...

Earlier this year in West Memphis Arkanas and officer pulls over a van for an traffic infraction. Back up arrives. About 10 minutes into the stop the driver's 16 yr old son gets out of the veh, shoulders an AK-47 and shoots one or both of the police officers. It takes the 16 yr POS approx 2 seconds to put rounds down range. POS Dad and his POS son get back in the van and leave.

A short while later they are spotted in a Walmart parking lot and are stopped by 2 more police officers. The POS and his POS son start a gun fight. Another officer rams the van and returns fire with the POS and his POS son. The POS and his POS son are killed.

In Seattle Wash, 4 Police offiers are gunned down in a coffe shop as they sit at a table....

Also this year, several Police officers have been ambushed and killed upon arriving at calls...

Got stopped last Sunday morning. I was the only vehicle on the road and rounded a left turn and he nailed me with the radar. As his lights came on and he turned around, I pulled over. He was griping at me about 51 in a 35 took my info and went to his car. While he was there I took off my helmet and sat on the bike. I guess the grey hair helped, he gave me a warning and sent me on my way. Old guys on sportbikes are not common. He was extremely professional and matter-of-fact. I guess he felt "grandpa" probably wasn't too much of a danger

I have read that the cops both were shot in the head with one round...is that correct? and if it is how on Earth did that happen? Both in the head with one shot each??? And now after he shoots the two cops the news is saying he is a person of interest in like every shooting in Florida it seems, up to three that I have personally heard on the radio...makes me think about the guy in Lakeland that shot the cop and when they found him he had 88 bullets in him and the chief of police said the reason he had 88 bullets in him stemmed from the fact the police ran out of bullets other wise there would've been more....Anyway....there was one video of a cop pulling a gun on a guy while off duty in an unmarked car, then Douchebag White shoots Mike in the back in Ohio and now someone states a cop pulled a gun after a chase at a whopping 50mph....hmm....

The edit is adding the link...

Is everybody packing heat in the U.S. or what? Drkside, good to hear you didn't get your head shot off. That sounds a little unsettling. Do U.S. cops usually have their guns drawn when they pull over motorcycles?

Not even close to everyone. It will vary by area though. Rural areas tend to be more armed, while urban areas aren't. (Speaking legally owned guns, which the guns used to shoot those officers probably aren't)

I have too many friends on the job. Car or bike, I get lit up, I pull as soon as is safe. If I have to keep moving a bit (like the last stop), I make sure to acknowledge them, turn around, and hand-gesture for "I'm going to go to there and turn that way".

Once I stop, I turn off the engine and SIT STILL with hands in view on either the wheel or the bars. Just waiting for them to tell me what to do. I don't reach for a wallet unless they ask me to, and when they do I explain "it's in pocket xyz...", and for reg cards "it's under the seat, would you like me to grab it or would you rather just run the tag, it's owned by this license number here, same name and address". When I carried, my first words were always "my name is Joe, I have a carry permit, and I am/am not carrying at the moment". If I was carrying, I would identify where it was and ask if they would like to hold it for the duration of our conversation.

They have a tough job. I'm not there to make it any tougher. If they're paying attention to me...chances are I did something to draw that attention and I have nobody to blame but myself.

I agree with you, Ratbuell. A super dangerous job most of us would not want. They are exposed to garbage who will shoot them without a second thought on every stop. They definitely need to be held accountable but I'm on their side and darn happy they are around.

Thank you. The last few posts here are feel good for me. The few that have met me on the board know that I am a rather meek guy, but at work, it is different. It is nothing personal, but I have been attacked, had people "go off" and such. My goal is to go home at the end of duty, and you may not be the one to prevent that but there are those that would try. It is a rough job, I can count on a single hand the times I have been thanked for trying to help someone. It really is nice to hear people understanding where I (others) are coming from in these situations.
For those that are absolutely against police, I'm sorry you feel that way, but I will still be there if you need me.

My 2 cents.
(edit for spelling) : )

That happened over here in Lakeland. Ale Gators had a car wash to raise funds for that douche canoe's funeral! I also heard a woman ranting on the radio about how good a person this guy was. You can be a f@cking saint! The day you pull a gun and try to take ANYONES life let alone a cop's, you've turned yourself into an automatic piece of shiz in my book.

Liqour,

The exact specifics on how the 2 officers were shot have not been told as of yet. The info I know is both were apparently shot in the head by this POS. I do not know how many shots were fired. The POS is now a suspect/person of interest in 3 other homicides.

So what that the POS that killed Matt and his K-9 was shot at until the officers ran out of bullets. He laid in ambush while the officers were searching for him.

These POS are thugs plain and simple. They are not productive citizens of society. They have not been "harassed" by the law for traffic violations, they have commited crimes.

As for the guy that got shot in the back and the helmet cam incident... I do not condone bad training, bad judgement or bad officers. They either need to be re-trained or removed from service.

Not something we have to contend with much over here as the coppers have to write up a detailed report if they even draw the gun. Also very few people carry in Europe.

My first action if I get a pull on the bike is to take my lid off so they can see that I'm an old git.

Then I lay on my Brit accent a bit thicker so they know from the outset that I'm not French. They're usually impressed by my command of the language & when I tell them my wife is Breton I either get a smile of approval or a grin of sympathy, it breaks the ice & I nearly always leave with a warning.

It costs nothing to be pleasant & polite, there's no percentage in getting mouthy with the law.

However when I'm at work driving a wagon I won't hesitate to point out politely but firmly when they're incorrect on the current very complicated legislation, but I'll put it in such a way that I'm helping them from making themselves look stupid, so they can save some face.

I've been arrested more than most people.

I've never been shot, but I've had the gun drawn on me plenty of times. Guns don't really make me nervous, and even though in my various cases, the gun being drawn was inappropriate, I'm still willing to give the benefit of the doubt that the officer is well trained in the rules of engagement.

HOWEVER... If I was a cop, and somebody was hurrying to get their helmet off, dropping keys (or anything) on the ground, going for their pockets, I'd definitely have my gun out. I'd be smart enough to know that they have 0.0000001% chance of getting a shot at me, so I wouldn't shoot them in cold blood like that douchenozzle did, but I would definitely be ready.

My advice: pull over, stop the engine, spread your hands out on top of the gas tank, all fingers visible. In a car, engine off, hands on the wheel. Wait for instructions in either case.

Stay alive. I would much rather be tried by twelve than carried by six.

I've gotten MANY MANY breaks from LE. My mom used to be one and quite a few aunts/uncles/cousins still LE. They got a tough job!! But Drkside, you didn't happen to commit the egrerious offense of speeding with a helmet cam in Maryland did you LOL

I've been lucky. Only been pulled over on the bike twice, first time cop dropped it to 68 in 65 (I was easily doing 85), didnt show up to court. 2nd time it was bike safety week, coming home from the shore at 3am, I didn't have a tag light. he didn't even give me ticket, I went to school with his nephew so we BSd on the side of route 50 haha.

But when i pull over, engine off, keys on ground, hands behind the head. Maybe overkill but... IIRC most dangerous time for LE is traffic stops as the stories above, never know when some scumbag with felony warrants will pull a weapon. I like to make em feel better. Plus it helps in just getting a warrant LOL

So what that the POS that killed Matt and his K-9 was shot at until the officers ran out of bullets. He laid in ambush while the officers were searching for him.

Hm...well, the so what would be that the POS's you refer to are joined by many, many more POS's that do the same exact things to the general public, but when our friends or co-workers are killed we are supposed to let our system handle it, but you guys get to fill them full of holes before a jury of their peers get the chance to decide their fate. I am unconcerned about whether or not cops have a tough job, if you don't like it find a new gig, and I don't want anyone to get killed cop or otherwise while they are just trying to do job and be left alone, but when it is a cop that is killed we are supposed feel worse that when it is any other citizen? why? If the guy in Tampa was a suspect in three other killings why didn't the manhunt start then? Why only after he was accused of shooting two cops? Anyway, I have hijacked the thread..sorry dood, and I doubt we will see eye to eye on anything Paint.....I think it is sad those two were killed in Tampa, but I also think it is sad that it took this guy killing cops before the manhunt got serious after he had supposedly gunned down three others.....

I'm not sure I follow the OP-
A police officer pulled you over
and pointed out a clear safety
issue (If you're not seeing cops behind you, then you do have a serious safety concern to address).
He lets you go with no ticket, etc.
I'd say it's a good day and the officer used his time to perform a good service that could very well save your life.

I hope you thanked him.
How quickly did you repair your mirror?

I will start this with I'm not nor are any relatives police officers.
the difference between killing a citizen and an officer of the law is when you assault a officer you assault our justice system, and that is the start of a break down in society.
If judges and jurors are murdered or kidnaped,do we say oh hes no different than me?well as a man he is not but as badge or a robe he is.
