OK, whew. I just got the bike home. A little late to take pics (those will come tomorrow) but here is what I know (or can tell).

1996 S2

17,200 miles

Custom Paint
Thunderstorm Heads and piston
Crane Cams Fireball HI-4E Performance Ignition
K&N filter
Mikuni carb
Vance & Hines SS2 muffler (yeah, it's kinda loud)
Lots of stainless bolts
Corbin Seat
Also has the owner's manual and survey letter with Buell sticker : )

The reason for no rear turn signals is that the fiberglass piece has been broken off. I'll may rig something at first, but I will eventually buy a new tail piece and paint to match. The fronts I just have to bolt back on.

It does not have the signature stuff.

The last 7 digits of the vin are 3001097.

OK, go ahead, tell me what I've gotten myself into.

And I had, in my own 2 hands, a BRAND NEW UNPAINTED S2 TAIL SECTION, at the Erik Buell Racing 'yard sale'.

Email 'em. I'm sure you can get one (yes...they had more than one).

The SS2R can be repacked; I recommend steel wool, it lasts longer. Either that, or a) I have a Supertrapp I took off that I could be persuaded to sell, or b) you can adapt a Buell race muffler (like I currently run) to the stock S2 header with an automotive 2" to 2.5" adaptor and an extra clamp.

Find out what cams are in it. Mine runs like a scalded dog with the Thunderstorm top end and X1 cams that I put in/on a few years ago.

Great bike. You're going to wonder how you lived so long without one....and if you're like me, like last Sunday while I'm blasting through the mountains of MD, I found myself amazed - repeatedly - at how quickly the bike got up to ...uh... "extralegal" speeds, and how rock-freakin'-SOLID it is at those speeds.

And it's FIFTEEN YEARS OLD.

Truly, an amazing piece of machinery.

With a soul.

Congrats on the new bike! BTW Tramp, I know what you mean about unsprung weight. I put and XB frontend and rear wheel on my S2 and handling and braking are far better than before. Especially the braking after I installed an Erik Buell Racing front rotor and sintered pads.

Phelan- What did installing the XB front end entail?
Did you use XB trees or did you slip the XB tubes through your S2 trees?

The OEM stock brake pads are sintered, incidentally....as are most you'll find.

I used '04 XB forks because they have 54 mm forks and will slide into the stock triples. If you installed them, though, the adjusters would interfere with your bars. They lowered the front of my S2 quite a bit (about 4"), but I like it.

I'm late to the party but I'll type a response anyway ...

The gear spacing is different on the S2 than the M2, I've currently got one of each and in reality while I know the spacing is different it really doesn't matter much - adapt and ride and don't worry about it.

The seating/riding position is different between them, adapt and don't worry about it.

The S2 is easier to change a drive belt on, usually, or in concept anyway. Learn how on each and don't worry about it.

I sat on a lady's S2 with a Corbin and it felt like it put me too far back, stock seat felt better to me at the time. Today I might have a different opinion, but since I don't have a Corbin my opinion is not in challenge. And if you've ever spent much seat time on a road bicycle the stock S2 seat ain't a big deal. I actually get more 'nad numbness issues from the stock M2 seat than the stock S2 seat (was that too much info? Sorry.) Bottom line - adapt and don't worry about it.

Due to employment issues I might be trying to sell one off again, it will probably be the M2, but the right (wrong?) price/offer on the S2 might change my mind. But then nobody ever wants to give me my asking price so this becomes a moot point. Adapt and sell something else to get by and don't worry about it.

Lately I've been riding the H-D bagger (1991 FLT...) simply due to luggage/storage capacity and passenger capability ( a story unto itself that I won't go into ), but over the last two years the S2 got more miles put on it than the bagger and the M2 has mostly sat collecting dust and growing spiderwebs. I'll probably chase the spiders off the M2 this weekend and get it running again now that I've un-buried it from a corner of the garage, but I suspect it will soon be a dust collector again and the S2 will be seeing the road more often.

If I needed to do a ghetto run I'd probably take the M2. If I needed to go on a job interview I'd either take the bagger or the car, probably the car. If I wanted to head out into the countryside to de-stress and just go for a long ride I'd probably take the S2.

I probably should have kept the Ventura rack on the M2, made it a very versatile all-around bike. But I sold it off and in reality it doesn't matter much.

I type too much sometimes so I'll just shut up now (and they all said yeah, and yawned ).

Since the OP already decided to get the S2 I guess this post was about pointless except for the following question:

Ratbuell, what kind of price did they have on the bodywork? I need to get around to fixing a few things on mine.

Nah Mike, your good. Thanks for the post. Everyone's comments have been very much appreciated.

I made it out and took pics of the bike. They are here:

I figured since I mad a decision I should put the pics in the S2 forum.

Once again thanks for all the comments.

You have my best wishes for a fast & painless repaint....and r&r of the chromed parts.
I'd never realized that Liberace had owned an S2.
