from my understanding if you have the unlimited plan like most of us who already have plans you get to keep it instead of being forced to have the new plans.

If your a current iPhone user, log onto ATT and it'll show you your data and text usage.
( they are not tied together on the iPhone )

to use more then there new $25 plan, you have to be on your phone all day everyday.

I have unlimited right now and after 3 weeks only used 200mb ( 1/10th of the 2k cap )
my buddy who is on his alot had 600mb with just over a week left.

I'm thinking about dropping to the $25 plan in a few months to save me 5 bucks a month.

I'm happy with the new plan idea.
They say something like the top 8% of iPhone users clog just over half the network ( 54%??)
meaning it runs slower for the other 92% of users.

This will help get em off every once in a while.
But all those 8% are grandfathered in with the unlimited still, but it'll stop new sign ons from joining em.

Upgrade the network, or punish the users? Not a tough choice for ATT, so they picked the one that would be more profitable. It will come back to bite them in the ass.

AT&T's unlimited data plans will expire and not be renewed. Current users will be forced to select a limited data plan.

In my first month with the Droid, I used 1.2 gigs. In my second month, I used 6.1 gigs. The phone is constantly doing something that eats data. I'm paying for an unlimited plan, and I aim to get the most out of it. If Verizon dumps unlimited plans then I will let my contract expire and look for something else. Hell, I'd probably go back to my LG Voyager, because it's an excellent phone and it still looks brand new.

No way would I want to spend an extra $50 a month for data.

Pwnzor, you're wrong. The new data packages are for NEW AT&T customers. Any current customers with unlimited data can keep it as long as the want.

Badlionsfan, you're mistaken.

That article says current customers are not required to SWITCH to a new plan, but are allowed to do so without renewing their contract.

Nowhere in that article does it mention what will happen when the current contracts EXPIRE.

well apparently I don't use that much according to the little at&t app. But it would have fooled me because I am always downloading stuff on to it. I still will not change to a limited plan until I am forced too. But I will start monitoring how much I use to see if any months I do come close to 2 gigs and I am going to take it off of wifi in my house from now on so I can abuse there network.

I think I can work my way around this then... When a contract runs out, it goes month-month under the previous terms. I have 5 lines- 5 separate contracts- under my plan. I use my phone far more than anyone else. So if I get a new phone on another line, I can swap the sim cards, and have an iPhone 4 whilest keeping my unlimited plan.

From http://www.technewsdaily.com/how-atats-new-data-pl an-stacks-up-to-rivals-0690/

"Finally, AT&T customers that currently have $30 unlimited plans can keep those unlimited plans even when upgrading their devices or extending their contracts (although if you switch to a capped data plan, you cannot go back to the unlimited one)."

If you have the unlimited plan now, they WILL NOT force you to switch. But if you EVER cancel the unlimited plan you can not get it back.

I'm going to play around with the iPhone 4 before I decide to switch or not. Just to see what it will use.

They delivered a plan that will save money for 92% of their users while allowing the remaining 8% to continue using their old plan. Not quite what I'd call a bullet wound.

I don't know facts, so I'm gonna keep my mouth shut.

But, I know AT&T has been the BEST phone carrier I have ever had. I've had Sprint, which SUCKS! I paid almost $200 to get out of that contract it was so bad.
I've had Verizon which was okay, no major problems there. And Cingular ( which is now much improved since AT&T took over.)
My family has T-mobile which always sucks when you get 15 miles out of Dallas.

I have yet to experience this iPhone drop call thing I've heard about. Only positives from me for ATT and iPhone. Best combo for me!

I agree with you rah. I have tried all of the major carriers and though I loved t-mobiles costumer service more than any other at&t simply has the best coverage of the 4 in texas and louisiana which are the 2 places I reside. I hated sprint with a passion, Verizon was no better, and t-mobile just has bad coverage compared to at&t.

AT&T and verizon are the two best carriers around NE Ohio, and knowing a lot of people with both, I'd probably give a slight edge in coverage to verizon. AT&T just as a few odd dead spots around that those I know with verizon don't have.

The two reasons I stick with AT&T is I love my iPhone and the roll over minutes are nice as they have come in handy when I have an overly chatty month.

The band-aid is restricting data usage. The bullet wound is the overtaxed network.

If you want to believe AT&T's press release that says THEY want to save YOU money, then I have some great lakefront property in Siberia for sale.

I don't need a press release, I can just look at the rates. The smallest data plan used to be $30. Now it's $15. I don't need to stream feature-length movies over the cell network, I just want to be able to check email, get directions, and maybe look for a restaurant once in a while. 200mb is plenty for that, so my plan is $15 cheaper than it would have been before this change.

+1 Spike.

Most of my video/audio stuff is done either while connected to WiFi, or at home on my laptop. I usually download my music, video, and podcasts to my laptop, then sync them over to my phone.

A couple Youtube videos will quickly put you over that 200mb limit. It is easy to hit 200mb a month even without doing anything video related, I average 30mb a day on reading email alone, plus some light websurfing easily puts me at around 3gb a month. This week is going to hurt a bit, as I will be doing tethering with my laptop.
