Dangit... I was moving back to North Carolina when I got this job up here in the land of holy hell... if I come down there, will you take me fishing?

Some of the best times of my life were at Duke Marine Lab in Beaufort...

The dolphin were school dolphin, but were nice size. The tunas average 50lbs each.We caught all that in 3 1/2 hours.Hope to do it again tomorrow.Charters are slow,so I happy to have a good couple weeks here.Hoping when schools get out we will pick up some more.

Sweetness! You cleaned up on the Mahi!
I just got back from Hawaii fishing with my brother on his boat. It was a pretty good trip too.

That one was 168 lbs. The last day of my trip we had a 200+ up to the gaff and some rookie (me) missed the fish and pulled the luer right out of the fishes mouth with the gaff. My brother was ready to throw me out of the boat LOL.

Dfishman, what kind of tackle do you guys use on the right coast? We were trolling pencil poppers on 80# line. Some of the guys using live bait were doing well also.
Just curious.

We pulled naked ballyhoo on 80lb test leader on 30lb outfits & small lures for dolphin.Once a school is found we pull in our trolling stuff & break out our bailing rods.Just a hunk of squid drifted back in the school.Hook a fish ,leave it on till you hook another(the school stays with you this way.We catch a limit(60) in as little as 20 minutes some days. The tunas were caught trolling using seawitches in front of ballyhoo on 130lb test wind on leaders.

Wow, 60 fish in 20 minutes is crazy. Sounds like a blast! The dolphin in Hawaii wont touch dead bait, I wonder what the difference is?

You have to work them up to feed like that with a little chum.I use my trolling valve to creep the boat at the same speed the school was swimming when I found them.If they are around a float then I circle at a very slow speed. They bite much better if the boat is creeping along.

Sounds like you have it down to a fine art. I'll give that a shot next time I go over there.
We got into a couple of schools of dolphin but only caught a couple of them. Even tried chumming some up but they would swim by and not even look at it. Fish must be well fed over there. My brother said we would have cleaned house if we had live bait on the boat.
