ok guys ive been to multiple forums, and no one seems to give me a straight answer and ive seen the type of things y'all have done for others so i have faith in ya ; ).

Alright so i have a 1991 Ford F150 standard cab/long bed, 4x4 with the 4.9L (300ci.) straight 6 and an E4OD (i believe) automatic transmission. Also it only has about 118k VERY hard miles.

My problem is that every now and then the tranny slips like it goes into neutral and just revs and then slams back into gear, unless i get out of the throttle and then it still slams into gear with a little less force. Then sometimes it shifts REALLY hard to the point where you can feel it in the drive shaft and then other times you can barley feel it shift. And if its cold out and i put it into reverse it SLAMS into gear and makes a loud clunk. I LOVE this truck as it was my grandpa's before he passed and he bought it BRAND NEW 4 months after i was born and im going to keep it in the family forever, so ANY ideas/advice/etc. would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thank You,
Jake

Has the trans ever had it's filter cleaned? I assume it is topped off on fluid.

A really good flush and refill with a filter may just be the fix you're needing, then again it may not.
Sometimes it just gets worse.
If it were me, it'd be the first thing I did.
Also, it seems as though you're intent on keeping the truck, I don't blame you.
I'd look into having it rebuilt, can't go wrong there.

Take it to a trustworthy transmission shop. Have the pan and valve body pulled, the shift solenoids tested and a pressure test done...It could very well be the solenoids (this is an electrically shifted transmission)...

Its possible the pcm is not getting a speed sensor signal through the inst. cluster.
The spd signal is first sent to the inst cluster and the inst cluster sends the signal to the pcm.
Was a common problem for that year.
If someone could monitor the spd signal at the pcm or try a used inst cluster.

Shop manual.

That, or maybe some of the better Chiltons guides, will tell you where everything is as well as band adjustments, etc.

I agree, it could be solenoids...but depending how long its been going on, your bands and clutches could be worn as well now.

Usually the speed sensor is mounted on the tailshaft housing of the transmission. It should have either wires or a cable coming out of it and when you pull it out of the housing it will have a color-coded plastic gear that rides on the trans output shaft.

I had almost the same issue in my 03 s10. Turned out my transfer case was junk. Complete rebuild. cracked open the case and not one whole gear inside. only thing that kept it together was the case. Thank god it was only 2 years old so the warranty covered it.

did your transfer case still work? because mine definetly still works, i use my 4wd quite often and it works very well.

however it does make a really loud whining noise in 4hi i guess it could actually be the transfer casse hmm, never thought of that. Thanks ill have to look into that!

Thanks

Every thing I own has a manual transmission(except snowmobiles)...never a problem with any of them.Changed the fluid in the Sonoma (100 K) and the S-10(190 K) last year and the fluid was still golden with normal black particles. Even the 'ol Pinto wagon with 100 K and a loaf of bread size transmission has survived many "laying down a J" ...........

yay i know, and i wish i had a manual but i didnt have a choice in the matter...and its what my grandpa ordered so thats what it will stay lol...manuals are SO MUCH easier and cheaper to work on and/or replace!

Zip, if your Pinto has the "sideloader" box it's virtually bulletproof.

Got a check engine light on? Since it's a 91 it is an OBD I setup. If it's an electrical problem with the tranny it still should throw a code.

my transfer case still worked. The only reason I knew there was a problem was when it seemed like it slipped into neutral then slammed back into gear really hard, or if i let off the throttle not quite as hard. No engine lights and no diagnotic errors. I took it in the shop 2 times and they told me no issues. The third time I took it in I threatened the lemon law and the master trans mechanic took a look at it right there while I waited. I took him for a ride and showed him what it did. He told me he knows what was wrong. Put it on the rack and a retaining clip was left out at the factory. Unfortunately it had been driven so long when he opened the transfer case to inspect it all the gears fell out in chuncks. Not one solid gear left in the transfer case. Complete rebuild. Thank god for warranties. Of course this was on a 2003 s10 auto/4x4 and a 4.3 v6. Not sure if this will help but might deserve a look into the transfer case.

A couple of possibilities are the MLPS or an internal leak causing a pressure drop. Your first step should be to check for codes, this may give you a direction to head. If the problem is an internal leak, you are looking at trans replacement time. The MLPS is serviceable in the vehicle.

Mr_grumpy,I had a 71 Pinto I wanted to blow up so I could procede with putting a 351 in it.Totally thrashed it and could get 4th gear chirps with WOT power shifts. Started it one day to drive two blocks to work and it broke the timing belt idling out the driveway. Engine got a turbo and went into a friends hotrod garden tractor. Really screamed, but too much boost torched a piston neart every run.

Manual
Lever
Position
Sensor

It tells the ecm what gear you have selected. If the signal changes while you are driving down the road, the ecm may think that you have down shifted or shifted to neutral.

Not all codes will trigger a check engine light, the only way to know if your truck has set any codes is to retrieve them.

It is on the side of the trans where the shift linkage attaches to the shift shaft.

Pinto engine went into a whole load of different Fords in Europe back in the 70s, with 2 basic options on the box, the std one was your usual toploader, & the hot versions like Capri GT etc had the sideloader. I can't remember ever having to touch one of the latter.

I had a MK2 Capri 2litre GT, that went like the clappers in a roughly straight line, it handled like a cat on wet lino though.
