It's sorta like the golden rule if you got the gold you make the rules. I don't blame anybody I just don't have the energy to try to explain it hell its good to be passionate about some things sometimes I wish I didn't learn what the corp world is really like.

Glitch said "H-D marketing is excellent at selling an image, not necessarily machines."

Is it improbable or impossible that sportbikes could have been worked into that "image"

Yes, impossible. H-D identity is very very strong and so focused on something completely different. The reactions to the Youtube posting of the honest H-D ad show the intense polarization.

Fair enough. Just trying to make sense of everything.

HD markets to the "biker", so then with all their marketing genius (tongue firmly in cheek) they have always preached to the choir? A self-fulfilling prophecy of advertising and Jim Jones juice.

I was at the dealer's Harley Demo event today and ended up only riding one motorcycle, a XR1200. That was the only motorcycle there that I had any interest in test riding. I would say it was slightly better than my 1998 Buell M2 Cyclone, but at least it seems that Harley just might be moving in the right direction with the new XB1200X. Time will tell, but unfortunately I don't know if Harley will be around long enough to tell.

The question is whether a buyer can ever walk into a Harley dealership with a truly blank slate.

When you shop for a motorcycle, does Harley come just as a motorcycle or is all of the rest of the "image" part of the deal too.

Most folks who walk into the store are there looking for which HD model to buy. The decision to go HD or some other model has already been made before they walked through the door.

Rarely is it a list of models with HD on it.

If one is coming with all models on the list, how does the XR1200 rank?

When I was doing it, most of the people would buy a bike that
1) Their friend had
2) One that they could afford
3) One that the wife would be comfortable on
4) A replacement of similar bike but with the 'new' updated engine/tranny/color
5) One that they had rented
6) one that they read about
of the bikes that I sold, very few of them went to riders that were concerned about the tech specs of the bike (wt, handling, power, gearing, performance suspension, performance brakes)

You know who cared about that? Conversion riders, riders that were coming from a world were the E-moto penis had to be the biggest baddest yadda yadda. The BMW/Triumph/Ducati guys are notorious for it. They will argue stats allllllll day if you let them.

Oh and just so anybody still in the biz is paying attention... I NEVER sold a bike because it had a balloon on it. knock that tripe off already.

I wasn't there very long today but I know they did sell a HD Trike while I was there. I think that was a good move by Harley to start making trikes because their rider base isn't getting any younger if you know what I mean.

while euro-bike and buell enthusiasts may be interested in stats, i really don't think that tells the whole story, as specs on asian bikes generally see off specs on all others... if stats were the be-all/end, all, the euro bikes and buells wouldn't have any support whatsoever.
