Just doing a job for a business in the town and dredged this pic from the archives. The water from nearby Lake Taupo hits the molten magma of the volcanic core and forces its way to the surface. They run a power station on it over the hill.  | ||

I think craters is one of the attractions in Rotorua - this is just a paddock by the side of the road out of Taupo. This looks reasonably comprehensive http://www.nzgeothermal.org.nz/nz_geo_fields.html | ||
