OK, so the first amendment doesn't actually say there should be a separation of Church and State, but here's exactly what it does say...

quote:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Basically the government is prohibited from telling the church what to say or do. Pretty straight forward, right.

So how does Nancy Pelosi get away with explicitly telling the Catholic Church what they "MUST" say and do? She is clearly stepping beyond the bounds of the Constitution. I can only imagine the uproar in the media if a prominent Republican had said something along these lines.

She has as much right as anyone to ask this of the church. She just can't demand it on behalf of the government.

Actually that same amendment grants her and you for that matter the right to ask that question.

So you would be OK with any Republicans telling the Church what they "MUST" say, do and think?

If she's telling the Catholic church that they MUST leave little boys alone...then yes. I hate politics and think churches, not so much religion, is a scam!

Sure as long as they don't threaten them to get their way. I mean come on asking the church to forgive is not exactly out of line. I would however take exception with her or anyone for that matter trying to get them to denounce something or someone.

The reason for this First Amendment is because of England's establishment of the Church of England as the countries national religion. The original drafters did not want the US to do the same. The whole reason most people left England, think Puritans, was to get to a place they could worship their own religion...}

Yet she's surprisingly silent on the church's position on abortion. What a hypocrite!

Let's not lose sight of those same people who sought freedom of religion considered most if not all other religions to be heathens.

Maybe I'm just splitting hairs.

Catholic Church = Roman Empire

I do NOT consider the Catholic Church to be the same as Catholic people.

I draw a very thick, dark line between those two. I do not blame the Catholics for the actions of their governing body.

Firebolt32, I agree with you on that point, it's a matter of telling the Church that they can't protect people who are breaking the law and causing other harm.

This is a case of a very prominent politician telling the Church what they "MUST" do in pushing a political agenda. Drkside79, I don't see how pushing a political agenda has anything to do with forgiveness. Even if you could tie it to forgiveness, what business is it of political leaders to tell a church they must forgive people. Do all religions have to be about forgiveness?

Actually she has spoken publicly about how the Catholic Church supports abortion. It was one of the most incoherent statements I've ever heard come out of her mouth.

Amnesty from laws of man. Not the traditional area of the Church.

If you listen to the video she is actually telling the Church to push a political agenda. You are just trying to spin it. Quite dishonest. You are already backing away from your first answer.

And some here claim the American Revolutionary War was not a religious war. Sheesh.

This is nothing new. The Catholic Church has long been influenced by and influences secular politics.

In this case, the majority of illegals are catholic, and with declining membership, the Catholic Church sure could use the new members and their donations. So the "catholic" & speaker to snakes, Nancy is well within her rights as an American to suggest this to Catholic Church bureaucrats as a way to advance her AND their agenda.

Also, and not at all a coincidence, the Catholic Church has long been under the influence of the Progressive Movement, as part of a KGB push in the 20th century to use Catholic Churches in South & Central America as teaching places for marxist ideology and revolutionary cells. Works like a charm. Here in the U.S. there are plenty of converts to marxist liberation theology in the Catholic and Protestant Churches. See Rev. Wright, and the rest of the current Prez.'s "spiritual advisers".
